Ex-ESPN host blasts Shane Gillis for jokes about female athletes in ESPYs monologue

Daily Mail2 days ago
Shane Gillis 'didn't even try to make clever jokes about women athletes' during his viral ESPYs monologue, former ESPN personality Sarah Spain has fumed.
Gillis, 37, was tasked with hosting ESPN's annual sports awards ceremony on Wednesday night, giving him the opportunity to mock a number of sports stars, some of whom were in attendance at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Among the comedian's victims were Shedeur Sanders, Aaron Rodgers, Bill Belichick, Jake Paul and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while he also ventured outside of sports by making jokes about Donald Trump and disgraced late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
He also trolled a number of women on the night; taking aim at the likes of Megan Rapinoe, Simone Biles, Caitlin Clark and the WNBA as a whole.
'Megan Rapinoe could not make it tonight... nice,' Gillis said about the former USWNT soccer captain before adding . 'No? We're gonna pretend she's a good time? Alright.'
The actor and comic also mocked 4ft 8in Olympic gymnast Biles over her height and the WNBA over its lesser-known players while saying about Clark: 'When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist fighting Black women.'
In a year of crazy growth for women's sports choosing an ESPYs host who doesn't even try to make clever jokes about women athletes (he at least *attempted* for the men) he goes with hacky "no one knows the WNBA" bits, "Pinoe is a bad time" & repeatedly insults Black women. COOL.

Yet those gags did not go down well with Spain, who has ripped into Gillis for his 'hacky' punchlines about female sports stars.
The sports reported wrote on X: 'In a year of crazy growth for women's sports choosing an ESPYs host who doesn't even try to make clever jokes about women athletes (he at least *attempted* for the men) he goes with hacky "no one knows the WNBA" bits, "Pinoe is a bad time" & repeatedly insults Black women. Gillis had mixed success with his jokes on the night after some drew huge laughter from the crowd and others failed to land.
His brutal dig at legendary NFL coach Belichick, 73, and his 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson sparked one of the loudest reactions from the audience after he first began a joke about MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani.
'Shohei is a once in a generation talent. No one's been able to do what he's done at so many positions - pitcher, hitter, and bookie,' Gillis said, referring to Ohtani's former interpreter's $17million betting scandal.
He then set his sights firmly on Belichick and Hudson. '"Bookie" is what Bill Belichick reads to his girlfriend before bedtime,' he continued, to rapturous laughter.
'They do the "Very horny caterpillar," "The little engine that could but needed a pill first," and of course, "Good night boobs." That's my favorite one.'
'Not trashing Bill Belichick,' Gillis went on. 'He is 73 years old and dating a hot 24-year-old. People are criticizing him. What happened to this country? We used to be a great country.
'He won six Super Bowls. He is dating a hot 24-year-old. Maybe if you guys won six Super Bowls you wouldn't be sitting next to a fat ugly dog wife.'
He then slightly backtracked as that harsh quip drew a stunned reaction from the crowd.
'They let me do it. This is Disney. They allowed that... Yeah, we should've taken that out,' Gillis said. 'I had doubts going into that. That didn't work all week.'

England's clash with USA delayed by weather in Washington DC

England's final summer tour game against the United States has been delayed by an hour because of bad weather in Washington DC. The game was due to start at 1705 local time (2205 BST) but USA Rugby released a statement 10 minutes before the scheduled kick-off time. 'Match Update. Weather delay ahead of the USA Men vs England match,' the governing body wrote on X. 'New kick-off time will be shared shortly.' An update from USA Rugby said the game would now kick-off at 1805 local time (2305 BST). England Rugby posted on their X account that the kick-off was delayed due to a lightning strike in the American capital. A giant screen at Audi Field told fans to 'exit the seating bowl' and 'seek shelter in the concourse'. Football's Club World Cup was recently held in the US and the tournament was plagued by extreme weather. Several games were played in fierce heat with temperatures sometimes exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, and Chelsea's tie with Benfica suffered a lengthy delay after a Charlotte thunderstorm forced the players off the field. Steve Borthwick's England were due to wrap up their season against the Eagles after beating Argentina 2-0 in South America.

Nick Saban's daughter speaks out on rumors legendary coach is coming out of retirement

Nick Saban is not coming out of retirement, his daughter has insisted. Rumors swirled earlier this week that the seven-time national champion at Louisiana State and Alabama was eying a return to the sidelines a couple of years after his final season in Tuscaloosa. 'A very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around, and just really, really admire – they seem to think Nick Saban is not done coaching,' former Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McIlroy sad on Monday's 'Mac and Cube' show in Birmingham. 'He's pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again.' Asked for his source, McIlroy opted against revealing too much but did emphasize this person is definitely a high-level college football insider. 'If it wasn't someone notable, I would never say a word,' McIlroy said. 'He is of firm belief that Nick Saban will coach in college football again.' But some would say there are no sources more reliable than Saban's own family and his daughter, Kristen, has refuted those claims. She posted a picture on her Instagram story of her dad walking onto the field with the caption: 'Damn, I miss this.' Fans thought she was fueling those claims that Saban was going to return to the sideline. But it seems she was not. 'Apparently, some of y'all feel trolled by my last story of Nick's walkout… he's not coming back to coaching, hate to break it to you,' Kristen then said in another post. 'You had your time.' Saban retired after the 2023-24 college football season, which saw his Alabama team lose to the Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl. Now a co-host on ESPN's College GameDay, Saban was replaced at Alabama by former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer, who went 9-4 in his first season at the helm. Many speculated on social media that Saban's possible return was down to reports that Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order for NIL standards. Since 2021, and under pressure from states and the courts, the NCAA has allowed student-athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness (NIL). Student-athletes can now be compensated for merely showing up to play and can earn a profit for spokesperson gigs, clothing and autograph sales and more. Additionally, a legal ruling on June 6 allowed colleges to directly pay players via revenue sharing for the first time. The settlement of House v. NCAA marked the end of the NCAA's previous model of amateurism, in which athletes were not allowed to earn money while in school. Schools can now share up to $20.5million of their revenues with their athletes. The reports of an upcoming executive order come one day after a House subcommittee advanced a bill along party lines that would establish national standards for student-athlete sponsorships. Called the SCORE Act, the proposed legislation would supersede current state laws regulating NIL. The White House has not commented on the latest report of an NIL-related executive order, but President Trump has a long history of expressing interest in sports. He has attended many major sporting events, including several prominent college football games like the Army-Navy football game last December. Saban has been critical of the NIL funding in the past, largely because he was concerned about the effect on college football. The NIL era also has brought a rise to the transfer portal era, with thousands of students across all sports seeking to move schools - some of them for bigger paydays.
