ORI bags Vedapeetha award for nurturing Indian knowledge

Udupi Sri Bhandarkeri Mutt

Indian knowledge
, Vedic sciences, culture, and traditions with the Vedapeetha award and a felicitation. In this regard, a high-level committee of experts announced the award for the ORI.
Sri Vidyeshateertha Swami, head of the mutt, said the award will be presented on May 9 at the Rashtraguru Sri Vedavyasa Jayanti, the 82nd session of the Akhila Bharata Madhwa Rajya Sabha, and the 25th Aradhanotsava of Sri Vidyamanya Teertha. These events are jointly organised by Sri Matha, Sri Madhwa Radhanta Samvardhaka Sabha, Sri Bhagavatashrama Pratishthana, and Lokasamskriti Kala Vidya Vikasa Pratishthana at the KK Venugopal Sabha Bhavan in Belagavi.
DP Madhusudhanacharya, director of the institute, said that the ORI, established in 1891 by Maharaja of Mysore Chamaraja Wadiyar, was tirelessly working towards the collection, preservation, research, editing, and publication of ancient palm-leaf manuscripts in book form. "It is a matter of pride and honour for the institute to receive this prestigious award," he said.

He further said that ORI, a prestigious institution in India, has the distinction of publishing over 240 works in book form since 1891. It is one of the leading institutions in the country with a collection of over 70,000 palm-leaf and paper manuscripts. He conveyed his delight that Bhandarkeri Math recognised this service and selected the institute for the award.
Madhusudhanacharya said the institute undertook the preservation of original palm-leaf manuscripts and their printed books through various schemes and endowments. The digitisation of these manuscripts is progressing rapidly, and efforts are under way to make them accessible to knowledge seekers worldwide soon. He said that the prize money of Rs 1,00,000 will be appropriately utilised for the publication of ancient texts and development of the institute.

Mettur dam reaches its full capacity of 120ft
Salem: Mettur dam on Sunday reached its full capacity of 120feet with the inflow recorded at 58,324 cubic feet per second. To ensure dam's safety, water is being released downstream and into lakes. As the dam attained its full capacity, minister of tourism R Rajendran released water to the lakes from the Thippampatti Water Supply Station and through the 16 surplus vents directed downstream. While addressing reporters, the minister said chief minister M K Stalin instructed the diversion of surplus water to projects such as ponds, lakes, and Sarabanga to promote water conservation. "The Tamil Nadu government has initiated a project to supply water to dry lakes in the Sarabanga basin of Salem district through irrigation from the Mettur dam, with an estimated cost of Rs 673.88 crore," the minister said. He said under this initiative, when the Mettur dam reaches its full capacity of 120 feet, surplus water will be released to fill 82 lakes and ponds via the Thippampatti main irrigation station, Vellalapuram sub-irrigation station, and Kannanderi sub-irrigation station. "Currently, the work to supply water to 57 lakes has been completed," Rajendran noted, adding that through this project, 356 million cubic feet of water will be redirected, 3,364 acres of land will be irrigated, and drinking water will be supplied. This has resulted in the filling of 11 lakes managed by the water resources department, two municipal lakes, three township lakes, and 41 panchayat union lakes across 32 villages in the Mettur, Omalur, Edappadi, and Sankari taluks.

Over 1.32 Lakh Seats Allotted in Vidarbha as Maharashtra's FYJC Admissions Begin
Nagpur: The Maharashtra school education department is set to begin the First-Year Junior College (FYJC) admission process under CAP Round 1 from July 1, with nearly 33% of seats allotted in Vidarbha—marginally higher than the state average of around 30%. Students will have about a week to complete the admission formalities. For the first time in Maharashtra, Class 11 admissions are being conducted on the same online platform where the merit list was declared, which was released on Saturday. In the Vidarbha region comprising Nagpur and Amravati divisions, 1,32,708 seats have been allotted out of 4,08,490 available, reflecting an allotment rate of 32.5%. This indicates that nearly two-thirds of the seats remain open for future rounds, offering students greater flexibility and choice in the upcoming stages. Among the three academic streams, science emerged as the most preferred option. Of the 1,85,275 science seats available in Vidarbha, 75,445 were allotted, showing a fill rate of 40.7%. The arts stream followed with 44,348 allotments from 1,61,435 seats, resulting in a 27.5% fill rate. Commerce remained the least sought-after stream, with only 12,915 of 61,780 seats allotted—a low fill rate of just 20.9%. In comparison, the Nagpur division, comprising Nagpur, Gondia, Bhandara, Wardha, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli, saw 67,055 allotments out of 2,17,415 seats, marking a slightly lower allotment rate of 30.9%. Students can check their allotment status online at and must complete document verification and confirm their admission by July 7. Round 2 of the CAP process is expected to begin on July 9, with the next merit list and details of vacant seats to be released shortly thereafter.

Elderly couple face eviction from makeshift shed after house attachment
Kozhikode: An elderly couple living in a makeshift shed outside their house, which was attached by a public sector bank in 2023 for loan default, are now facing eviction from the temporary shelter in Pallikkara, Kasaragod.
