After Dune, director Denis Villeneuve to helm next James Bond film

LOS ANGELES - Fresh from his success with the Dune saga (2021 to 2024), Denis Villeneuve has been tapped to direct the next movie in the storied James Bond franchise, Amazon MGM Studios announced on June 25.
The online retail giant has chosen a filmmaker very much in vogue in Hollywood as he makes his first foray into the world of the now-iconic British agent 007, first brought to life seven decades ago by late British writer Ian Fleming.
Villeneuve, who is Canadian, said he grew up watching Bond films with his father.
'I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory,' the 57-year-old said in a statement released by Amazon.
'I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come,' he added. 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.'
There is no word yet on who will play Her Majesty's spy.
English actor Daniel Craig's final portrayal of James Bond came in 2021 following the release of No Time To Die. Since then, 007 has seen many twists and turns.
Amazon paid nearly US$8.45 billion (S$10.7 billion) to buy legendary Hollywood studio MGM in 2022, which included distribution rights to Bond's extensive back catalogue.
But for the subsequent three years, the retail behemoth was met with resistance from Ms Barbara Broccoli and Mr Michael Wilson, the franchise's historic producers who for decades had jealously guarded the governance of one of cinema's most valuable properties.
The company run by American businessman Jeff Bezos finally reached a financial agreement with the pair in February to take creative control of the franchise.
Some fans have expressed concern that the character will be exploited by Amazon through a multitude of new films, or spinoff series that go direct to its streaming platform Prime.
Against this backdrop, the choice of Villeneuve, who directed critically acclaimed films such as Sicario (2015) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017), resonates as a pledge to purists.
'We are honoured that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond's next chapter,' Mr Mike Hopkins, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in the statement, noting Villeneuve's track record with 'immersive storytelling'.
'He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself.'
Villeneuve's two instalments of science-fiction saga Dune were each nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. Dune: Part Two (2024) grossed US$700 million globally and won Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. AFP

BUSINESSES, POLITICIANS WELCOME EVENT Friday's ceremony had no legal status under Italian law, a senior city hall official told Reuters, suggesting the couple may have previously wed legally in the United States to avoid the bureaucracy associated with an Italian marriage. While some residents and activists raged against Bezos as a symbol of inequality and arrogance, Venetian businesses and political leaders welcomed the luxury nuptials, hailing them as major boost for the local economy. "Those who protest are in contradiction with the history of Venice, which is a history of relations, contacts and business," Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told Reuters. "Bezos embodies the Venetian mentality. He is more Venetian than the protesters," said centre-right mayor, adding that he hoped Bezos, who donated 3 million euros ($3.51 million) to local institutions, would return to the city to do business. Brugnaro said Bezos had attached no conditions to holding his wedding celebrations in Venice, and City Hall had only learned about his donations after they had already been made. Bezos, Amazon's executive chair, got engaged to Sanchez in 2023, four years after the collapse of his 25-year marriage to novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
