Gut health plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. When it's compromised, it can impact us both physically and emotionally, disrupting sleep, triggering mood swings, and interfering with essential bodily functions. Nutritionist Deepsikha Jain frequently shares valuable tips on her Instagram profile about eating right and living well. On July 4, she posted a reel highlighting key signs of poor gut health. 'Don't ignore these signs of a struggling gut. Catch them early before they lead to more serious problems,' Deepsikha emphasised in her caption.
1. Brain fog or feeling confused:
When the gut is not healthy, it affects our cognitive functions. We have difficulty thinking, making decisions, or paying attention. We also have brain fog all the time.
2. Having poor digestion or extreme bloating:
Poor gut health can trigger gastrointestinal troubles, such as indigestion. Slow digestion can make us feel bloated.
3. Getting tired and sleepy:
The gut plays a significant role in energy production for the body. When there is an imbalance in the gut microbiome or inflammation, it can lead to chronic fatigue, making us tired and sleepy. 4. Feeling angry or irritated:
The gut and brain are closely related. When the gut is imbalanced or inflamed, it can send negative signals to the brain, leading to irritation and anger.

The gut-brain connection plays a significant role in mood swings. When the gut is imbalanced, it affects neurotransmitter production, leading to mood swings and disrupted energy production. So, it is natural to feel off when you have a poor gut.
Tips to improve gut health:
In a 2025 interview with HT Lifestyle, Anukalp Prakash, director of gastroenterology at CK Birla, Gurugram, said, 'Though each of probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics has a specific role to play in maintaining gut health, it's worth noting that not everybody requires all three in supplement form. Consider these 'biotics' an A-team: prebiotics feed, probiotics colonise, and postbiotics work. A solid, fibre-based diet, coupled with individualised medical advice, is still the best method to ensure a healthy, resilient gut.'

The Jeevasarthakathe scheme aims to create an efficient system for organ and tissue procurement from deceased donors and ensure the distribution of organs after obtaining necessary permission. With Jeevasarthakathe coordination, organs or tissues from a deceased or brain-dead person (the donor) are transplanted to another person (recipient) for the replacement of damaged and failed organs after surgical removal. A brain-dead or cardiac death, living persons can donate nine to ten types of organs, including kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestine. In the last year, the department of health, under the supervision of Jeevasarthakathe coordinators, retrieved 225 different organs from 25 brain-dead individuals and saved the lives of 250 individuals suffering from various chronic diseases of organ failure, among other reasons. Apart from these, people of all ages, including children and the elderly, can donate organs. The department of health carried out organ retrieval processes under the supervision of Jeevasarthakathe coordinators. Speaking to TOI, district surveillance officer Dr M Nagaraju said the Jeevasarthakathe scheme saved the lives of 250 individuals in the last year in Mysuru district. The department is also spreading awareness among people about the importance of donating organs to save the lives of those suffering from chronic organ diseases at all its hospitals by conducting workshops in schools and educational institutions. "We are also taking help from corporates and non-govt organisations involved in the promotion of health and family welfare activities as well as organ donor activities," he said. People who want to donate organs must register their names on the official website of Jeevasarthakathe, which was launched by the department of health. They can also register offline by visiting the district surveillance office of the department of health and family welfare and at govt-run hospitals for registration of organ donation, officials said.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday set aside the West Bengal Medical Council's order, suspending former MP Santanu Sen's registration as a medical practitioner for two years from July 4, 2025, for his "infamous conduct". But the court restrained Sen from using FRCP (Glasgow), a fellowship, in his letterhead until further order. Justice Amrita Sinha said Sen might use the expression 'diploma FRCP', as mentioned in the certificate he obtained in 2019. Calling the medical council order "non-speaking" and "cryptic", Justice Sinha said the petitioner was not told about the reasons behind passing the order. Justice Sinha directed the state medical council to send the petitioner information, evidence, complaint or inquiry, based on which the order was passed. She also told the council to offer the petitioner an opportunity to raise all issues in his defence and pass a "reasoned" order. She let the council start the proceedings against Sen de novo, if it wanted. "They said they are awaiting a response from animal husbandry minister K Venkatesh," said farmer Nagaraja Shetty. Despite departmental vaccination programmes against foot-and-mouth disease, new ailments have emerged, resulting in cattle deaths in rural areas. Farmers urge animal husbandry officials and public representatives to address their concerns and ensure proper veterinary appointments.
