Under the seat is a universal power outlet compatible with Australian plugs and a USB-A port. These are shared between passengers on a two-between-three basis. Another deviation: There's no seat-back entertainment screens. A subset of the KrisWorld Entertainment system can be viewed from your own device; I've forgotten my headphones, so that counts me out. The crew provides headphones, to plug into the armrest to listen to one of the 12 channels, as in the olden days. Wi-Fi? I'm afraid not.
Service
Something that's not an anomaly is the service. The Singapore Airlines crew is as attentive and efficient as always. When I realise the overhead locker above my seat is reserved for crew use, a friendly crew member kindly whisks my bag to a space further forward.
Food
The spiced chicken in creamy tomato gravy is finished by the time the cart gets to me, but my fish arrabbiata pasta, and salad of barley, cucumber and smoked salmon are tasty. Wines, beers and spirits are complimentary and later there are individual tubs of ice-cream. Surprisingly, there is no menu card in the seat back, nor on the limited selection of KrisWorld entertainment on my device.
Sustainability
Among many airlines, Singapore Airlines has committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050.* Newer-generation aircraft help this cause by using less fuel, but not this one, which could be one reason the airline plans to replace it.

Singapore Airlines flies these dinosaurs on three routes, from Singapore to Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu. By October, the airline plans to replace all 737-800 NGs with the more modern 737-Max 8 (which it already flies, with Boeing 787 Dreamliners, on the Kathmandu route). Seat pitch in economy will remain the same, but all seats on the new planes will have entertainment screens and Wi-Fi. Business class seats will lie flat, standardising this in the entire fleet.

The verdict
Five hours was long enough on the worst Singapore Airlines plane. The service was excellent, the food was good, but this does not feel like a Singapore Airlines experience.

I travel to... Film stories in the wildest places I can find. My work allows me to travel to extremely remote and beautiful places, from deserts to remote coral reefs, usually with a very basic camping set-up. We save all our weight and space allowance for a couple of hundred kilos of camera equipment. I love this job because every film is a new expedition full of physical and creative challenges. Telling stories about the natural world has given me a wonderful reason to spend time connecting with the wild things. Nick Robinson behind the camera. We started researching what to film for The Kimberley by listening – to Elders, scientists, rangers, local people we met, anyone with a deep knowledge of the place really. The Kimberley is layered. You can't just rock up with cameras and hope for magic, you have to earn it. We spent months doing our research, looking at the seasons, migrations, weather patterns, the logistical challenges and, most importantly, building relationships with the people of the region. Of all Australian destinations, my favourite is the Kimberley. The wild landscapes, the animals are pretty incredible, but ultimately it's the First Nations people and their spiritual connection to the natural world that creates the magic for me. I'd love to say I switch off on holidays, but... The truth is I'm always looking for adventure. Even on a lazy trip, I'll spot a rock formation or a river bend and start dreaming up ways to capture the beauty and magic of the place. I need a mission even on holidays, but after a day of exploring, I love the feeling of sitting quietly by a fire surrounded by wild things, a river bend or a mountain top. Anywhere I can sleep under the stars is my happy place. I plan the trip myself... Half the fun is poring over the maps, calling locals, figuring out how far off the beaten track we can get, and coming up with novel strategies to film the animals we're searching for. Travel light, be kind, let curiosity be your guide, never let your adventure goals outweigh the risks. Inside my carry-on you'll always find... A camera, a whole lot of batteries, and a great nonfiction book. I'll also pack a spot tracker or other personal locator beacon; it could save you or someone else. I pack my suitcase... Seeing places no one else does. Watching landscapes and animals drift past and having the time to take it all in. Expedition ships offer an incredible sense of adventure without all the effort and discomfort. My tip for seasickness is... Keep your eyes on the horizon. If that doesn't work go with the sick, you'll feel better almost instantly. And don't have your eye in a camera while bouncing up and down, it's the quickest way to make yourself sick. When travelling long distances by car I always prepare by... Fuelling up and stocking the Esky. I have a great playlist, and always bring a paper map. Phones go flat, maps don't. I always ask locals for advice because... They know things that Google doesn't, including the best tracks, the local traps, where to find the wild things and where to get a cold beer in the middle of nowhere. I always get travel insurance because... When you're filming in the middle of nowhere, it's not optional, it's a survival plan. My tip for keeping valuables safe is... The Nullarbor, South Australia. It has world-class wilderness, incredible free camping, fishing, and beaches to yourself. There are so many mini adventures to be had in the region. The travel app I swear by is... In Australia, I use ExplorOz Traveller with Offline Maps. They have most of the small bush tracks marked on the map. Most underrated Australian islands
1/7 Reasons to consider a winter (or summer) break on Norfolk Island, 1450km off the coast of NSW. It's got the climate of Byron Bay, as well as the surf, the swimming and the easygoing, self-sufficient vibe Byron used to have. But none of the crowds or traffic jams. It has one of the world's most southerly coral reefs, and is surrounded by a marine national park known for its diverse life. Pretty much all produce is grown organically on the island, it's great quality, and you'll absolutely taste the difference. It's wild and beautiful, with dramatic sea cliffs, placid bays, brilliant hikes in the national park and breathtaking drives that all magically end up back in the main township of Burnt Pine. Its convict history and ruins are captivating and so significant they are on the World Heritage register. It's a renowned Dark Sky zone. Being so far from any light pollution, the night skies here blaze brighter and more abundantly than you can imagine. The locals, who number around 2200, are super friendly, creative, resilient and resourceful. And they might possibly have the best work-life balance of any people anywhere. 2/7 From the northern city of Townsville it's a quick ferry ride across the Coral Sea to one of the most laid-back and beautiful of all Queensland's islands. Magnetic Island – Maggie to its fans – is a 52sq km slice of unspoilt loveliness, 80 per cent of it protected by national or conservation park and all of it surrounded by the World-Heritage wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. It's a place of simple pleasures: hiking mountain trails where koalas, rock wallabies and colourful birdlife await, and testing out the 23 beaches to find your favourite. Book a 4WD tour along the isolated west coast, chart your own adventure on an electric bike or moped or circumnavigate the island by sea with 360 Magnetic Island. There are only four main settlements, each with distinct vibe and charms. Hotels are scarce but there are plenty of holiday lettings listed at and new glamping tents handy to the restaurants and services of Nelly Bay. Go in winter for warm, sunny days, stinger-free swimming and whales galore just offshore. 3/7 Despite being one of Australia's newest – and most spectacular – national parks, the Houtman Abrolhos remain firmly off the radar of most travellers. This archipelago of 210 islands lies 60-80km west of Geraldton in Western Australia, which itself is more than a four-hour drive north of Perth. The islands' remoteness and isolation define their appeal. Like a mini Galápagos or Madagascar, they are home to unique plants and animals found nowhere else, and the surrounding ocean abounds with marine life, including rare Australian sea lions, dolphins and whales (in September to December). Expect plenty of ocean-based activities and a dramatic chapter of Australian history; the Dutch ship Batavia wrecked on the reefs here in 1629 sparking one of history's most murderous mutinies. Visit on a multi-day expedition cruise with Eco Abrolhos or Blue Juice Charters, spending your days swimming, snorkelling over shipwrecks – and the southernmost coral reef in the Indian Ocean – and collecting crays for lunch. Pushed for time? Get a gull's-eye view of the islands with Shine Aviation or Kalbarri Scenic Flights. 4/7 In the Spencer Gulf just off Port Lincoln, Louth Island was, until recently, a privately owned sheep run firmly off the tourist radar. Then tech mogul Che Metcalfe bought the 135ha Eyre Peninsula island in 2021 and began realising his vision for Rumi – a resort hotel where fine dining meets offshore adventures. Getting there is half the fun. Guests board an amphibious Sealegs craft that handles sand and sea with ease and deposits them on the island shore at Homestead Bay. Current accommodation consists of five upstairs rooms in the main building and nine compact bedrooms in the smartly renovated shearing shed, but there are plans to build 26 luxury villas and a day-spa, with construction slated to start this year. In the meantime, Louth is open to day-trippers for dining at its Samphire restaurant, where talented chef Jono Sweet puts local produce to exceptionally good use, and guided buggy tours. Catamaran cruises, beach barbecues and kayak fishing are also on the Rumi menu. 5/7 On Thursday Island, as a local once told me, 'you find a sort of peace that once upon a time used to exist in most parts of the world'. The Torres Strait's 200 or so islands, a mix of mangrove-fringed peaks and coral cays, are strewn between the tip of Cape York and Papua New Guinea. Far removed – physically, culturally and spiritually – from mainland Australia, they offer guaranteed serenity thanks to their mellow pace of life and seductive tropical scenery. Thursday's the main hub and access point to the Torres Strait's rich mix of Indigenous, Pacific and Asian cultures, military and maritime history and its endless supply of crayfish. New-ish operator Strait Experience takes the hassle out of getting there with one-, two- and three-day packages ex-Cairns taking in all the major sights and scenery including the Gab Titui Cultural Centre, traditional dance performances and World War II relics at Horn Island. They also run a two-day escape to Masig Island, a Maldives double in our own backyard. 6/7 Buffeted by the Roaring Forties and marooned in the Southern Ocean midway between mainland Australia and Tasmania, King Island is an exhilarating alternative to Australia's tropical island escapes. It's a short flight from Melbourne or northern Tasmania to this untamed land where cows outnumber residents (by about 100 to one). That explains the isle's excellent reputation for dairy and beef products, alongside super-fresh seafood and craft brews. Balance out the indulgence with vigorous hikes along the coast and interior (see for daylong guided options) and two links courses of challenging, dune-contoured golf greens. Accommodation ranges from farm stays and motels to self-contained cabins and the off-grid Kittawa Lodge. This luxurious property set on almost 40ha of coastal wilderness opened in 2019 offering two one-bedroom dwellings combining the drama of King Island's elemental scenery with interior comforts such as log fires, coffee machines and chef-catered meals. Robert Irwin and Nigella Lawson will star in an epic $130 million tourism campaign to lure more tourists from the US, UK, China, India and Japan. The huge spend marks the second chapter of Tourism Australia's successful Come and say G'day campaign that was launched in October 2022. Brand ambassador Ruby the Souvenir Kangaroo is also back in new traditional broadcast and online video advertisements, said Don Farrell, the Minister for Trade and Tourism. 'The previous campaign struck a chord with visitors, with Ruby the Roo bounding into the imagination of countless guests, encouraging them to book a holiday down under,' Senator Farrell said. 'I know this iteration, featuring popular talent like Robert Irwin, will be a smash. Tourism is the lifeblood of so many communities right around the country and creates hundreds of thousands of jobs. 'Come and say G'day is bringing more visitors to our shores, creating more jobs and growing our economy.' Tourism numbers are growing, with visitor expenditure in the 12 months to March 2025 reaching a record $52.6 billion. According to Tourism Research Australia, the number of international arrivals is expected to reach a record 10 million in 2026 and grow to 11.8 million in 2029. For every dollar invested in tourism attraction, Australia receives a $14 return which helps to support more than 700,000 jobs and 360,000 businesses. The Australian Government is supporting the industry to continue building and setting new records.  Phillipa Harrison, the managing director of Tourism Australia said the newt Come and say G'day campaign will help to ensure Australia remains front of mind for travellers in a competitive global travel market. 'Traditionally tourism campaigns have leveraged one famous face across every market but for our latest campaign Ruby will be joined by well-known talent from five different markets to showcase personal lasting memories of a holiday to Australia,' Ms Harrison said. 'The new campaign features Australian wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin in the US; food writer and TV cook Nigella Lawson in the UK; actor Yosh Yu in China; entrepreneur and philanthropist Sara Tendulkar in India; and media personality and comedian Abareru-kun in Japan. 'These international stars combine with local talent, including Australian actor Thomas Weatherall and Ruby the Kangaroo, to create bespoke invitations for five markets that are tailored for each country to showcase the sort of tourism experiences travellers are looking for. 'This campaign is part of the enormous body of work Tourism Australia does in key markets around the world and is backed up by a whole range of programs that helps our Australian tourism industry grow their international business. 'With competition for the international tourism dollar greater than ever before, we are confident this second chapter of Come and say G'day will ensure Australia continues to remain front of mind for travellers looking to plan and book their next holiday.' Susan Coghill, Tourism Australia's chief marketing Officer said Ruby would partner with local celebrities to drive destination appeal. "This is the first time we've strategically leveraged market-specific talent in a campaign to truly connect with travellers across our key markets: the US, UK, China, India and Japan," Ms Coghill said. "We believe this powerful blend of beloved characters, compelling local talent, authentic storytelling, and experiences that match what travellers are seeking will inspire international visitors to book that once-in-a-lifetime Australian adventure." The campaign, developed by agency Droga5 ANZ, part of Accenture Song, will be rolled out in key tourism markets with event launches and activations timed to align with key booking periods in 2025. The first launch will take place in China later this week; followed by India in late August; the US, UK, Japan and Germany in September and South Korea in November. Accenture Song chief David Droga said: 'As an Australian living abroad, it is both a privilege and a deep responsibility to help invite the world back home. What makes it even more meaningful is seeing so many of the world's top Australian talents, scattered across the globe and within our Droga5 network, come together to shape the next chapter of Come and say G'day.
