FA approves radical change to Women's Super League
Plans for the Women's Super League to be expanded to 14 teams have been approved by the FA Board, passing its final hurdle.
The news comes after WSL clubs voted to expand the top flight from 12 to 14 earlier in the week.
FA approval was needed due to the 'golden share' which the association holds over the women's game.
The plans will now come into place for the 2026/27 season, with the top two teams in the Women's Super League 2 promoted automatically at the end of the upcoming campaign.
A relegation play-off between the bottom WSL side and third-placed WSL 2 outfit will decide the final spot of the enlarged division.
A statement, published on the FA's website, read: 'The FA Board has approved proposals made by WSL Football to increase the size of the Barclays Women's Super League (BWSL) to 14 clubs. These approvals were made pursuant to The FA's rights under its special share in the leagues and also FA Rules.'
From the 2026/27 onwards, one club will be automatically promoted into the WSL with the worst performing side in the top-flight relegated. Then, the 13th-placed side in the top tier will face the second-placed WSL 2 team in a play-off.
The FA's statement added: 'There will be consequential changes to promotion throughout the remainder of the women's football pyramid for the 2025-26 season, which will be decided in due course.
'The growth of the WSL and the WSL 2 reflects the ongoing evolution of the women's professional game in England which we consider will be of benefit to all clubs.'
Initial plans to remove relegation all together were scraped after backlash from supporters, with clubs instead approving the new 14-team arrangement.

An MP has opened a new parliamentary office in a market town after it felt "like the right thing to do".Dr Peter Prinsley, Labour MP for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, opened the office about a year after being elected. The MP will hold surgeries at his new office in 4 Market Place, in Stowmarket. Dr Prinsley told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "It did feel to me like putting the office in Stowmarket made sense. There had never previously been any parliamentary office here; it felt like the right thing to do." The MP officially opened the office by cutting a red ribbon with the help of his wife, Dr Marian Prinsley, on Friday."Stowmarket is a really lovely little town, and we are very pleased to be able to be here," he added. The MP and his staff had been using the space for several months but had to delay the opening date until security provisions could be Waterman, labour councillor and leader at West Suffolk Council, said the opening was great news for Bury St Edmunds. "He's saying 'here I am, come talk to me' and I think that's what an MP should be doing," he added. Wellingborough's Warwicks menswear shuts down after 157 years
A men's clothing store described by customers as being a "foundation" of a town has closed down after 157 of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire shut down on Saturday following the retirement of its fifth-generation owner Neil Warwick, 61, said none of his family wanted to taker over the business, which he claimed was the oldest retailer in the about the closure, he said that the shop was still "profitable and successful, but that's life". Mr Warwick said the final week of trading had been "incredibly busy", with many customers coming in to share stories and memories of visiting."A lot of people just wanted to come in and say 'wow, I used to come here with my dad, grandad... so many people," said Mr Warwick. "People have travelled in from miles away."The shop was opened in 1868 by his great, great, grandfather Samuel Warwick and then passed down to five other Warwicks - Harry, Cyril, his father Alan, and then to Neil and his brother David. He said when David died in 2019 it made him realise he wanted a "new adventure" and there were "other things in life", adding he would "spend a bit more time enjoying life", starting by taking his wife on holiday."We've recently become grandparents and have lots of nice things to do. I'm sure I won't get bored," he said. 'Last bastion of town' The shop used to make its own suits but stopped in the 1960s when ready-made wear became popular. It also sold school uniforms until 15 years ago, when online retail really took before the store closed its doors for good, customers shared their sadness at the end of Warwicks. Barry Day travelled from Bozeat for one last visit."My relationship with the shop goes back over 25 years," the 67-year-old explained. "I would buy uniforms for my son. They've got really good quality men's clothes. It will be a sad loss."This is a foundation of Wellingborough... I don't think you'll get a quality shop like this ever again." Colin Gilmour, 76, lives in Earls Barton but grew up in said visiting the town used to be a "day out" for him in his youth."It [Warwicks] is one of the last bastions of Wellingborough.
