A twisty new Channel 5 thriller has been hailed as a 'sheer joy to watch' by viewers.
The Game tells the story of Huw Miller (Jason Watkins), a retired police detective still haunted by the one case he failed to solve – a stalker who taunted his town, mercilessly toying with his victims before eventually killing them.
When new neighbour Patrick Harbottle (Robson Green) moves in and utters the chilling phrase 'catch you later' – the sign off the stalker used to taunt Huw during the investigation – Huw is determined he's finally got his man.
What follows is a high-stakes game of psychological chess between the two neighbours as Huw's world begins to crumble around him.
On X, viewers hailed The Game as 'superb' after watching the first episode last night.
Among them is @terrettcorey, who said: 'Really enjoyed #TheGame on Channel 5. Tense, twisty and thrilling. Robson Green still has it.'
Echoing their sentiment, @Johnboy_Cook wrote: 'Jason Watkins is just superb in everything. #TheGame.'
@DebbieBlackma14 commented: 'I already love the premise of it. Hooked already #TheGame.'
@SouthernCazza1 also added: '#TheGame is going to be a sheer joy to watch. A stellar cast and a storyline that's already sucking us in and it's not even begun yet! Pure kudos.'
However, not everyone was sold on The Game, including @CheNirvana, who said: 'Channel 5 drama team seem to be obsessed with paranoid neighbours and voyeurism. We had the partner swapping one a while back .. then the magpies one with Jill Halfpenny the other week .. Now an ex-cop with a thorn in his side. How about a new idea? Shake things up. #TheGame.'
@Invisible_Lady1 commented: 'Another @channel5 drama that we'll all pick holes in on X but will be hooked until the end. #TheGame.'
@sajamor added: '#thegame I might go back if I read a review which shows this first episode's got better. So far it's been a real bore with the only likeable character being killed off. Perhaps he had the right idea sparing himself any more of life in that road!.'
Speaking about The Game, Robson, 60, described the cat and mouse thriller as 'an unforgettable journey.'
He said: 'The psychological thriller aspect of the story promises to be a gripping ride, and I can't wait to dive into the cat-and-mouse dynamics that [screenwriter] Tom Grieves has crafted. It's going to be an unforgettable journey.'
The Game is not the only Channel 5 thriller to have gripped viewers.
They admitted they were afraid of approaching their neighbours after watching the suburbia crime drama The Feud.
Starring Jill Halfpenny and Rupert Penry-Jones as couple Emma and John, the five-parter follows their idyllic family life — which implodes after they decide to add a kitchen extension to their home.
Emma and John's once friendly neighbours, including Sonia (Amy Nuttall), Alan (Ray Fearon) and Barbara (Tessa Peake-Jones), turn nasty when their planning application is submitted, setting in motion events that have dark consequences for the entire neighbourhood.
The synopsis adds: 'Laced with menace, The Feud reveals how Emma's aspirational dream turns sharply into obsession, paranoia, and fear.' More Trending
On X, viewers said The Feud had made them think twice about their own living arrangements.
Among them was @KathrynAnneTM, who said: 'This is why you should never get to pally with your neighbours #TheFeud'
@StevenRoutledg7 added: 'Is suburbia always this ghastly #thefeud.'
The Game continues tonight on Channel 5 at 9pm.

Line of Duty star's drama that will 'seize your soul' launches on BBC

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Today marks the day that Jimmy McGovern's highly anticipated latest TV project lands on BBC iPlayer. The new one-part drama, Unforgivable, stars Anna Maxwell Martin as Katherine, an ex-nun and therapist who works at an institution called St Maura's. Anna was introduced as DCS Patricia Carmichael in BBC One's crime drama Line of Duty back in 2019, a character known for her passive aggressive and unpleasant demeanour. In Unforgivable, Katherine works alongside lead character Joe (Bobby Schofield) as he finishes his two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a family member. Brookside star Anna Friel plays Joe's sister, Anna, who is tackling the aftermath of her family's trauma whilst protecting her two sons. Anna's contact with her inmate brother infuriates her father Brian (David Threlfall), who can't stand the fact that she is in contact with her brother, Joe. The Liverpool-set series also features Adolescence child actor Austin Haynes alongside Phina Oruche, Mark Womack and Fin McPartland in his TV debut. As well as being a best-selling author, screenwriter Jimmy has worked on many shows over the years that tackle social issues and injustice. Over the years, he's worked on Channel 4's Brookside, the docudrama Hillsborough and most recently the Bafta award-winning series Time, starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. Speaking to the BBC about his previous work on screen, McGovern said: 'It's got to seize my soul and if it doesn't do that then I won't be able to sit at the computer to write.' A description of Unforgivable reads: 'The Mitchell family deal with the devastating aftermath of an act of sexual abuse committed by a member of their own family who, after two years, is about to leave prison.' When the cast for the series was first confirmed, Jimmy told Radio Times: 'I can't believe the cast and crew that have been assembled for this production. It's a challenging film, yes, but I can't wait for it to be shown.' The release of Unforgivable comes shortly after Netflix added all four episodes of a 'gripping' spy thriller starring another Line of Duty star. Set in 1886, the drama The Secret Agent follows a man called Verloc (Toby Jones), who owns a sex shop in Victorian-era Soho. More Trending On the side, he's an informer for the Russian embassy tasked with spying on revolutionary groups, with Line of Duty icon Vicky McClurer playing his wife, Winnie. To round out the top of the call sheet, Stephen Graham joins them as the police Chief Inspector Heat. Unforgivable is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and airs tonight at 9pm on BBC Two. Will there be a season 3 of The Sandman? Latest news as season 2 ends

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page Today marks the highly anticipated drop of the last remaining episodes of The Sandman season 2. Fans were devastated to discover that this will be the last ever instalment of the hit show. Netflix has already announced that this will be the last we see of Dream (Tom Sturridge). The announcement came in the wake of serious sexual assault allegations made against the show's co-developer and writer, Neil Gaiman. Often referred to as Stranger Things' long-lost brother, the Netflix series has received great reviews – and has a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The second season focuses on love and loss as Dream looks to rebuild everything he has lost since season one. Will there be a season 3 of The Sandman? Fans were gutted to discover this is the last ever season of the popular dark drama (Picture: Netflix) Well, if that information didn't solidify the answer for you… No, there won't be a Sandman season three. Dream's adventures come to an end today, as the streaming service releases the final five episodes. The Sandman's showrunner, Allan Heinberg, did not mention Gaiman nor the allegations when he shared a statement on behalf of the show's conclusion. 'The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,' he told Netflix's Tudum. Many fans were left confused after Heinberg's statement, as The Sandman comic has 75 issues – which seems a lot to squeeze into two seasons. Still, it's not all bad news. On July 31, Netflix will release a special episode focused on Dream's sister Death, which will serve as an epilogue of sorts to the show. How many episodes of The Sandman are there? Dream suffers many complex relationships and encounters throughout the season (Picture: Netflix, Inc./Ed Miller. All Rights Reserved) There are 22 episodes across two seasons of The Sandman (that's eleven in each season). Netflix dropped the series in two halves, keeping viewers hanging on that cliff. The first six episodes of the new season dropped on July 3, with the following five landing on Netflix today. Comic fans will be gutted to learn that this is the last they will see of the Mortals, Dreams, Endless and Other beings. Who is in the cast of The Sandman? There has been lots of controversy surrounding the series due to serious allegations against the co-developer and writer, Neil Gaiman (Picture:) Tom Sturridge leads the cast as Dream, AKA The Sandman, who is responsible for watching over all of humanity as they sleep. In these tumultuous episodes, Dream attempts to rebuild his kingdom as he embarks on his epic final journey. The cast all work tightly together to ensure dreams run smoothly, with many dark twists and turns. The Sandman cast Dream – Tom Sturridge Lucienne – Vivienne Acheampong Matthew the Raven – Patton Oswalt The Corinthian – Boyd Holbrook Desire – Mason Alexander-Park Nada – Umulisa Gahiga Fate mother – Nina Wadier Fate Crone – Souard Faress Fate Maiden – Denita Gohil Death – Kirby (Formerly Kirby Howell-Baptiste) Lucifer Morningstar – Gwendoline Christie Rose Walker – Kyo Ra How are fans reacting to The Sandman season 2 part 2? Will the latest drop of episodes live up to fans' expectations?(Picture: COURTESY OF NETFLIX) Fans can't believe this is the last they will see of The Sandman cast as the streaming service has cancelled any possibility of a following season – despite its immense success. Some Sandman fans were gutted to learn that this would be the last release of the much-loved comic book adaptation. @waste-snow23 on Reddit said: 'I'm so so sad about this. I waited so many years for this adaptation. I understand why it was cancelled, but I loved the Sandman series dearly.' Don't let the Gaiman allegations ruin the dream... Our Deputy TV Editor, Tom Percival, shares his thoughts on The Sandman Season 2 Part 1… 'We do not choose to be created, nor do we choose how we are made.' In the first season of The Sandman on Netflix, these words are uttered by Lord Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), otherwise known as Dream. In the context of the show, Dream is referring to everyone's lack of agency in their inception. It's essentially a slightly pretentious way of saying 'you can't help where you come from'. Going into season 2, Morpheus's words feel especially apt due to the large shadow cast over the show by its co-creator, Neil Gaiman. While Gaiman denies the allegations, I understand why people may not want to watch the show. However, I believe so much more to the series than one man. In my opinion, The Sandman season two is every bit as beguiling, bold and brilliant as the first, managing to somehow elevate the source material. To take this back to the opening quote, Dream can't help who made him. So maybe we shouldn't let the circumstances of his creation rob us of arguably the best fantasy series Netflix has ever made. Read the full Sandman Season 2 review here. 'A big step up from Season 1. Kind of makes me sad that this is the last one.' @certainalbatross added. Other viewers were glad to see the demise of Gainman's emperor, @brat-sampsin98 said: 'He doesn't deserve to earn a penny. I'm glad he's seeing his legacy destroyed.' Fans noted that the streaming service's decision to axe the show was the right move considering the severity of the allegations made, but others felt for the cast who may have wished to tell the full story and have had their characters' journeys cut short. @ithinkther41am on Reddit said: 'It's really a shame Gaiman turned out to be a monster, because this was clearly a labour of love for everyone involved.' The Sandman is available to watch now on Netflix. Got a story?
