China's Fujian carrier could carry out swarm attack, delivering shock effect to enemy
China's state-owned national broadcaster CCTV has announced that the nation's most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, will be able to conduct 'deck load strikes' once commissioned. This is a type of swarm attack in which a large number of aircraft can be launched simultaneously.
The tactic, widely employed by the US Navy during the Vietnam War, is touted to enable the Chinese Navy to gain a 'first mover' advantage during battle. It had been previously speculated that Fujian would be equipped with the capability, but this is the first time it has been publicly confirmed.
"China's aircraft carrier technology is marking a historic leap as it enters the critical phase of combat capability development," CCTV explained in its report. The broadcaster added that the domestically produced carrier has been "progressing steadily" since its first sea trial in May last year.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the carrier will soon join the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), bringing the fleet's carrier strength up to three. The Fujian is expected to be operational by the end of 2025, joining China's other carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong.
"The PLAN equipped with three aircraft carriers, will greatly enhance its sea escort and defence capabilities," CCTV observed. "Compared to traditional aircraft carriers with ski-jump flight decks, the electromagnetic launch system of the Fujian can greatly improve the efficiency of carrier-based aircraft deployment," it added.
It's just this technology that forms the foundation of the claimed 'deck load strikes' of the carrier. It will enable the rapid deployment of multiple aircraft over a short span of time. "Launching a swarm attack could overwhelm the enemy, securing the first-mover advantage of early detection and pre-emptive attacks," CCTV explained.

According to military analyst Cao Weidong, conducting such a launch would test all of the ship's systems and crew. However, he noted that if the crew could perform up to the standard seen in training, "the carrier's full potential could be realized."
"Sortieing as many aircraft as possible in the first wave of attack to destroy, suppress and deter enemy targets enables the carrier to secure air superiority, establish maritime dominance or support landing operations," Cao told CCTV.
"In warfare, this allows the carrier to achieve first detection, first strike in the initial attack, inflicting significant damage and securing a strategic advantage," he continued.
If a mix of aircraft could be launched, the carrier could also be capable of conducting something called 'Alpha Strikes'. While total number of aircraft vary, such attacks typically involve getting around half of all aircraft onboard airborne in short order.
During such operations, the carrier will tend to remain heading into the wind and at General Quarters—an announcement made aboard a naval warship to signal that all hands must go to battle stations—ready to recover aircraft returning from sorties or damaged during battle.
According to the late US Admiral James Holloway—commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet during the Vietnam War—Alpha Strikes were deployed by the US for the very first time "for the shock effect or because of the necessity to penetrate very heavy defenses."
"On an Alpha Strike, all available aircraft on the carrier were organized into a single strike group," Admiral Holloway said when discussing naval history at a conference in 1991.

China-Senegal relations enter new phase with renewed political, economic cooperation
China and Senegal have deepened their long-standing bilateral partnership with renewed economic and political partnership, and cultural cooperation, highlighting the growing depth of China's influence within the Global South. China and Senegal have enhanced their bilateral relationship through renewed cooperation agreements. High-level meetings focused on achieving outcomes from the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Senegal affirmed its commitment to strategic partnerships with China under the Belt and Road Initiative. During a high-level meeting in Beijing on Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, and commended the significant progress achieved by both nations since the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. " China and Senegal are companions on the path to development and revitalization as well as good brothers. China is willing to work with Senegal to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and inject fresh impetus into China-Africa friendship and Global South cooperation," President Xi said. Sonko, who had earlier attended the World Economic Forum's 16th Annual Meeting of the New Champions, known as the Summer Davos, in Tianjin, extolled the strong historical ties between the two countries and emphasized the importance of mutual respect and shared values. 'The relations between our two countries go back a very long time; they are solid and based on common values shared by the Global South, ' he said, adding that China respects Senegal's sovereignty and development path. President Xi, however, called for deeper and swift implementation of the outcomes from the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and promised a more comprehensive Chinese investment in Senegal, particularly in energy, digital infrastructure, and trade. With a shared vision for the future, He also highlighted the upcoming China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges as a new opportunity to boost cooperation in education, tourism, youth engagement, and cultural initiatives. China - Senegal's reliable partner in progress Prime Minister Sonko commended the initiative; he described China as a ' reliable partner, ' and reaffirmed his country's commitment to the one-China principle. He further expressed enthusiasm for advancing cooperation with China through the Belt and Road Initiative and other bilateral agreements. ' Senegal is committed to firmly working as China's strategic partner to jointly promote international fairness and justice, ' Sonko added. Both leaders stressed the importance of defending multipolarity and strengthening South-South partnerships. As Senegal continues to push for economic transformation, its alignment with the Asian giant signals a gradual shift among African nations seeking development partnerships rooted in shared values and mutual respect.

Here's what a Nintendo superfan says about the new Switch 2
Nintendo's new Switch 2 is already off to a strong start – selling over 3.5 million consoles in just its first four days. I've been testing it out to see what's new and how it compares to the original. The Switch 2 builds on what made the original so popular – portability, flexibility, and a huge library of great games. But it adds a bunch of smart upgrades. First off, the screen is bigger. So is the unit itself – but it's still manageable to hold. The controllers now attach magnetically instead of sliding in, and that in itself is a big improvement. 'On this one it's just like a nice little snap and you're done,' said Nintendo fan Henry Mayhew, who helped me put the Switch 2 through its paces. He bought his console on day one. The dock is redesigned and adds to the system's versatility. You can play on your TV in up to 4K, take it on the go for HD graphics, or prop it up tabletop style. The controllers even work like a mouse now. Buttons feel better, the software runs faster, and graphics, haptics, and sound are all improved. 'The graphics are definitely improved and then it's more engaging to play' said Mayhew. Another big upgrade is game sharing. Downloadable titles now act as virtual game cards, which means you can share them with friends or use them across profiles. 'It's really nice not having the other person to have to have the game for you to be able to play it with them,' Mayhew said. One standout new feature is GameChat. It lets you voice chat while playing, and even plug in a USB-C camera. There's a new 'C' button to activate it. It's free through March 2026, and kids under 16 will need parental controls enabled to use it. 'I mean it's pretty fun…' said Mayhew. The only real downside? Battery life. 'Controllers… those will last you a decade,' said Mayhew. 'But then the battery life on the Switch 2… that only lasts 2–6 hours, and for me personally, it only lasts 3 hours before I have to dock it or plug it in again.' The Switch 2 starts at $450 – or $500 with the new Mario Kart bundled. The next big release? Donkey Kong Bananza, coming mid-July for $70. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. GOP is on verge of sweeping victory in bid to gut clean energy economy
Congressional Republicans are poised to reverse course on U.S. energy policy by wiping out hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies and incentives for solar and wind projects as well as for consumers seeking to purchase everything from energy-saving appliances to electric cars. The Senate's latest draft of the tax bill released overnight Friday contains strict green energy cutbacks that disappointed lobbyists for solar, wind and battery companies, who hoped senators would temper some of the House's most draconian cuts. It also imposes a new tax on existing wind and solar farms if they include materials from a foreign entity like China — a huge blow for the renewables industry, which still incorporates many materials from China across its supply chain.
