The visitor was visiting the world-famous museum on Saturday when he accidentally damaged a portrait of Tuscan prince Ferdinando de' Medici, which was painted some time around 1695-1700 by Anton Domenico Gabbiani, the museum said on Monday.
In widely circulated security camera footage of the incident, a man can be seen posing in front of the oil painting before leaning back and then quickly jumping up as he realises he touched it.
Pictures later published by local media showed a small tear in the painting around the area of the nobleman's ankle.
The visitor, who hasn't been publicly identified, was reported to the authorities. Meanwhile, the painting was removed from the exhibition for repair works, although the museum said the damage was 'light' and it will be displayed again soon.
The incident prompted Simone Verde, director of the Uffizi Galleries, to issue a statement condemning 'the problem of visitors who come to museums to make memes or take selfies for social media.'
'We will set very precise limits, preventing behaviors that are not compatible with the sense of our institutions and respect for cultural heritage,' he added in a statement sent to CNN.
Museum-goers accidentally damaging exhibits in the pursuit of the perfect photo appears to be an increasing problem for the institutions. Just last week, a crystal-covered chair inspired by one of Vincent Van Gogh's most famous paintings was seriously damaged when a tourist sat on it while posing for a photograph at a museum in Verona.
In April, a child damaged a huge painting by Mark Rothko, thought to be worth tens of millions of dollars, while visiting a Dutch museum.

RIP Ozzy Osbourne, Music Legend and Master of the Macabre
Ozzy Osbourne, famed heavy metal singer, has died at the age of 76—just a few weeks after performing in Black Sabbath's last official concert. He also enjoyed a robust solo career as well as fame that went beyond music. That included stints as a reality TV superstar thanks to MTV's hit series The Osbournes, but also as a touchstone figure for fans who revered his notorious antics over the years as 'the Prince of Darkness.' While many obituaries will go out today highlighting Osbourne's many contributions to music, it's also worth remembering his contributions to culture even offstage. His status as a metal superstar meant his influence filtered into adjacent media—including video games: he appeared in a World of Warcraft commercial and had songs included in Guitar Hero. He also became something of a counterculture hero, especially during the 'Satanic Panic' era of the 1980s and beyond, when the powers that be seized upon supposed hidden meanings in his songs—and fans found their own sources of strength in music that encouraged listeners to expand their minds beyond the status quo. Films and TV shows looking to create characters with similarly edgy outlooks often tapped into Black Sabbath songs and artwork as shorthand for conveying that—or just used the tunes as they made sense thematically. What would Marvel's Iron Man be without that 'Iron Man' needle drop, to name one example? Osbourne was known to be having serious health problems, which were evident onstage at the 'Back to the Beginning' farewell concert earlier in July—but given the colorful way he'd lived his life (his Behind the Music episode offers a vivid primer), we were lucky to have him as long as we did. Horns up to a legend whose voice will live on forever. Want more io9 news? The Who Kick Off Farewell Tour in Italy, Perform First Show Since Zak Starkey Sacking
The Who have kicked off their farewell tour 'The Song Is Over' in Italy with their new drummer, marking their first show since the departure of longtime time-keeper Zak Starkey. The rock icons announced the tour last May and kicked it off on Sunday night (July 20) at the Anfiteatro Camerini in Piazzola sul Brenta. They will also perform at the Parco Della Musica in Milan Tuesday night (July 22), before frontman Roger Daltrey plays a run of solo shows in the U.K. early next month. Watch footage here. The gig suffered from a few blips. A YouTube video shows that Daltrey sang 'See Me, Feel Me' while kneeling down, since he was experiencing leg cramps. 'The Song is Over' was reportedly listed as the final song, meanwhile, but it was cut from the set. Notably, this is The Who's first tour without longtime drummer Zak Starkey, who was fired earlier this year. A public and protracted dispute between Starkey – the son of Beatles legend Ringo Starr – and the band began in April, following a charity show for the Teenage Cancer Trust at London's Royal Albert Hall. The longstanding member, who joined the band in 1996, was initially fired before being rehired, and eventually fired again within a matter of weeks. Starkey's exit became more complicated when he claimed he was asked to say he'd quit the band due to other musical projects, writing on Instagram: 'I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit The Who to pursue my other musical endeavors this would be a lie.' Now, Scott Devours has taken over drumming duties, having previously performed in Daltrey's solo band. 'Yesterday, with a short, simple Instagram post, Pete and Roger, once again, changed my life forever,' he said in a statement posted to social media back in May.'I understand and accept the reality that there are many lifelong Who fans who are absolutely gutted by the news that Zak is no longer on the throne behind The Who,' it continued. 'As a huge fan myself, there is a part of me that's processing this loss with a heavy heart too.' 'The Song Is Over' tour will resume in North America on Aug. 16 in Florida. The series of shows will continue through the fall, including two dates at the iconic Hollywood Bowl (Sept. 17 & 19), as well as a night at Madison Square Garden in New York on Aug. 30. Sofia Coppola Will Direct a Documentary About Marc Jacobs
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." It was announced this morning that Sofia Coppola will debut a documentary about longtime friend and collaborator Marc Jacobs at next month's Venice Film Festival in an out-of-competition slot. The film will be titled Marc by Sofia, a play on Jacobs's now defunct Marc by Marc Jacobs line. This will be the first documentary for Coppola, who has directed industry favorite films like Priscilla, Marie Antoinette, and The Virgin Suicides. It's also Jacobs' first dedicated feature in a documentary since 2007's Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton. The two creatives have worked together for decades. Coppola starred in a Marc Jacobs fragrance campaign shot by Juergen Teller in 2002, collaborated with Jacobs on a bag collection while he worked at Louis Vuitton, appeared in his Fall 2015 ads, and worked with him on his in-house Heaven by Marc Jacobs line launched in 2020. Both have become emblematic of New York's downtown fashion scene in the '80s and '90s. There is no information yet surrounding which aspects of the life and career of Jacobs, who is fresh off the heels of his Fall 2025 show at the New York Public Library, the film will center. The infamous grunge collection for Perry Ellis, his stint as creative director of Louis Vuitton from 1997 to 2013, his work on his namesake line with its larger-than-life runway collections and youth-forward sister line Heaven—there's so much to encapsulate. Regardless, that premiere's red carpet—hopefully filled with fashion and film industry friends like Anna Sui and Kirsten Dunst and Coppola's new-to-the-spotlight daughters Romy and Cosima—will be one to watch.
