Conor McGregor's bid to take over football club ‘respectfully declined'

Sunday World20-06-2025
'[The club] is a safe space for all, especially for women, girls, and families.'
A football club has said they have 'respectfully declined' a take over offer from Conor McGregor.
Hartlepool United Football Club, who are based in the North East of England have been the subject of takeover rumours for months.
Speculation McGregor was going to buy the club intensified recently when he followed them on social media.
Now, the company behind the club, the Herd International Group, have issued a statement revealing that they turned down an offer from a 'high-profile' individual.

'As the directors and board members of Herd Group, we want to speak openly and clearly in light of recent speculation,' the statement began.
'We were offered the opportunity to involve a high-profile individual whose values and public behaviour we believe do not align with the spirit of Hartlepool United Football Club.
'We respectfully, but firmly declined.'
The club said that while others in the local community might feel that the person's association with them would 'represent a path forward' they don't share that view and 'never will.'
'Hartlepool United is a club rooted in community. It is a safe space for all, especially for women, girls, and families who proudly support this club and this town,' the statement continued.
"Our commitment is to preserve and strengthen that identity - not compromise it. We remain fully committed to completing the takeover and investing in the future of Hartlepool United - not just as a football club, but as a central part of the community.
"We believe in the potential of this town, and we stand ready to help it grow with integrity. unity, and purpose. Thank you for your trust and continued support. Herd Group."
The ex-UFC fighter has expressed previous interest in purchasing football clubs, including Chelsea F.C.
More recently, he expressed interest in purchasing two League of Ireland clubs.
His Crumlin pub, the Black Forge Inn, has its own football squad, in which McGregor spontaneously lines out for.
Last week he was caught on camera punching a partygoer to the ground at a nightclub in Ibiza.
Footage obtained by the Sun appears to show the Dubliner hitting a person twice during the incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The 36-year-old is seen in conversation with a man before putting his arm around his shoulders and then hitting him with his left hand while holding a glass of alcohol in his right.
The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion then takes another shot as the man stumbles to leave the reveller on the floor.
According to reports, McGregor carried on partying at the venue while the man who had been punched was thrown out.
The incident followed a boozy day session for McGregor who had earlier been pictured dancing with former glamour model Katie Price.
Last year, a jury found McGregor civilly liable for raping Nikita Hand at a hotel room in Dublin in 2018.
During the trial, Ms Hand testified she had been 'brutally raped and battered' by McGregor and at one point thought she was going to die and never see her young daughter again.
They also heard evidence that a tampon was wedged so far inside her vagina it needed to be removed with a forceps in the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit of the Rotunda Hospital, where she presented in a terrified state the following day.
The court was shown photos of Ms Hand's badly bruised body, taken by Gardaí two days after the events in the hotel.
In January, a judge ordered McGregor to pay Nikita Hand €100,000 of her €250,000 damages and €200,000 of her expected €1.3m legal costs.

But Luis Diaz's £55million switch from Liverpool to Bayern has boosted both the Red Devils and Toon's chances of landing the German Under-21 star as the Bundesliga champions might pull out of the race. FootMercato claim Juventus have not only failed to agree a deal with PSG, but they've also fallen short when negotiating personal terms with Kolo Muani. Juventus haven't thrown the towel in just yet but their struggles to secure a deal have opened the door for Tottenham. The report, which labelled Tottenham's interest as 'serious', added: "Already very interested last year, Tottenham are particularly keen on the deal. "Spurs are still looking to strengthen their attacking position and have already checked off Kolo Muani's name. Above all, they are in a position to offer PSG a one-time transfer." He said: "Of course, I've had my ups and downs, but above all, the last month has been quite difficult. "There's been a lot of talk on social media about what happened or didn't happen, but people don't really know the full story. It was difficult, but I also know it made me stronger." The Athletic say Leipzig are 'among several clubs' looking at Hojlund, who could be sold following a difficult spell at Old Trafford. Given the disparity in the players' valuations, Manchester United would still need to spend some cash on Sesko even if Hojlund was included as part of the deal. Hojlund has not been told to find a new club and Ruben Amorim was full of praise for the Norwegian following the pre-season win over Bournemouth on Wednesday. Copy link Copied By EFL clubs circle for prodigy Swansea City have emerged as favourites to sign Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone, despite a rival bid from Preston North End. Kone, 22, scored 18 goals in League One last season as Wycombe missed out on promotion to the Championship, losing to Charlton Athletic in the play-off semi-finals. Preston have made a bid of £3m but, with Wycombe holding out for £5m, sources close to negotiations say Swansea have offered £4.5m. Kone has been at Adams Park since moving from Essex Senior League outfit Athletic Newham in January 2024 following a successful trial. He has a year left on his contract and has attracted interest from several clubs, with French side Toulouse also reportedly interested in signing him this summer. But Swansea now appear to be in the strongest position to secure Kone's services, according to the BBC. He would be willing to earn less than half of his £275,000-a-week Man United wage in a bid to find the right home where he can play regularly once more. Juventus are among the other interested parties and it seems inevitable that Sancho will leave United before the transfer window shuts. Remediation continues 20 years on at former Carlow sugar factory

Food company Greencore has said remediation works are still ongoing on the site of the former Carlow sugar factory, 20 years after the plant closed. In a statement, it said once the works are complete, it will then consider future options for the land, including a sale of the site. It comes as local politicians call on the company to outline what it plans to do with the land. The plant, which first opened in 1926, operated for 80 years before it closed in 2005. Most of the traces of its past have been demolished, but the lime kiln remains in place. People Before Profit councillor Adrienne Wallace is one of those seeking clarity. "This is an iconic and unique site for Carlow," she said. "It really captures the rich history we have here ... It encompasses and holds a lot of value for a lot of people here in Carlow, so it's frustrating that 20 years on, we've seen little development. It has a huge amount of potential." At one stage, there had been talk of a new business park on the site, and 3,000 homes, but none of that materialised. "I don't see why they can't do something down here in terms of residential," said Cllr Wallace. "In terms of playgrounds, heritage site, there's so much potential here, and yet it's just been left to rot in the hands of Greencore. We really want to get behind this site and really bring it back to some sort of use for Carlow," she said. In a statement, Greencore said the lands are subject to a licence from the Environmental Protection Agency, and that ongoing remediations works are taking place in accordance with that. It said that "It is not possible to say for certain how long it will take to complete these works", and that it was aiming to finish them "as soon as possible", adding that there is no toxic waste on the site. It said it will then consider future options for the land, including a sale of the site. It added, however, that Greencore also owns other ex-Irish Sugar properties in the area, which are advertised for sale but that these properties have to date attracted limited interest from buyers due to planning constraints. The company also said the lime kiln, which is listed as a protected structure by the council, is in a state of disrepair, is potentially unsafe and "cannot be touched". It said that impacts the "potential future options for the site". The EPA said while production has ceased and the plant has been demolished, the company has not to date applied for surrender of the licence. In a statement, the agency also said all hazardous waste identified has been removed and the company continues to carry out groundwater and surface water monitoring. Greencore has said it is in the process of seeking to remove the EPA licence from areas of the site. "I'm curious to what they are cleaning up," said Cllr Wallace. "The EPA have said that there's no toxic waste on the site anymore ... a lot more detail needs to be given on exactly what they're clearing out how they're clearing it up, and how long that is going to take," she said. The sugar factory was once described as the 'beating heart of Carlow town', and its closure after 80 years was a blow for the area. Local historian Christopher Power recently published a book on the history of the plant and the impact it had. "Its heyday started immediately, it can't be overemphasised. It was an extraordinary concept in the new Ireland after the civil war, to create an industry from scratch in basically a bankrupt country," he said. "There was a great deal of anger and a terrible shock at the time when it went... I would say it probably had the most profound effect in the long term on farmers, because obviously the demand for sugar beet as a crop was gone to a great degree," he added. "I suppose things have moved on... people who worked there... time has marched on and quite a few have gone. "There certainly are generations now have not heard of it, and Carlow would have profoundly changed as well in in those 20 years... but certainly it is one of the main things people associate Carlow with still." He also spoke of the positive legacy the plant left behind. "It had a really tremendous effect on a whole lot of different industries, and a lot of the spin off industries that were created are still here. "For example, Carlow RTC really is a direct result of the factory." Christopher Power said the smell of sugar that used to hang over the town is now well gone. The land on which it stood though remains. Locals in the area seemingly want activity returned. "It has great history in Carlow, so just to see something being developed on it would be good for the town," one woman said. "If they could build a housing estate on it for the needy and the homeless, and don't leave it lying idle, derelict... utilise it," said another resident.

Irish Examiner view: Misreporting on social media adding to crime burden

We have reached a point in Irish life where serious crimes must not only be dealt with on their own terms, but the reporting and representation of those crimes have become entirely separate challenges. The attack on a garda earlier this week in Dublin city centre is a case in point — the crime itself exists in parallel with how it has been misrepresented and weaponised by those following their own agenda. It is welcome news that assistant Garda commissioner for the Dublin metropolitan region, Paul Cleary, is to meet with Coimisiún na Meán, the media regulator, regarding the incident. Mr Cleary is expected to push for social media companies to do more on disinformation and its associated dangers. This is a serious problem. Soon after the Garda attack in Dublin this week, former MMA fighter Conor McGregor referred to the incident online and cited the Irish Government's 'human trafficking racket' in a post which was viewed hundreds of thousands of times. Whether anyone should be giving credence to the views of Mr McGregor, a convicted criminal, is immaterial; as Mr Cleary pointed out, misinformation and disinformation are '...concerning, and we would ask people to make sure that the source of their information is credible'. The fact that Mr Cleary is to meet with Coimisiún na Meán coincides with a parallel story developing this week. Social media platform X is expected to appeal a High Court ruling dismissing its action against Coimisiún na Meán over its online safety code. The code sets out legally binding rules for video-sharing platforms and is aimed at protecting the public, and especially children, from harmful online content. The fact that the post mentioned above from Mr McGregor featured on X gives this story a certain neatness. What is more significant is that such legal challenges function as implicit endorsements of the work of Coimisiún na Meán and suggest it is achieving its aims. The wholehearted support of the Government is now needed to ensure the regulator can continue that work. Housing crisis - All fixes must be considered With no end of the accommodation crisis in sight, we have grown accustomed to hearing that all solutions must be considered to relieve what should be seen as a national disgrace. That should be borne in mind, perhaps, when considering a new proposal from the Government — public consultation begins this week on a measure to increase the allowance for cabins or garden homes up to a size of 45sq m, larger than the original suggested upper limit of 40sq m. Minister of state for planning John Cummins said the plan was a practical move which would provide housing options for people with a disability or young people wishing to live independently of the family home in the short term. Social Democrats TD Rory Hearne was scathing, saying the plan was open to exploitation and that there were 'real concerns about the impact of allowing a huge number of unregistered log cabins proliferate ... without regard for sufficient sewerage facilities, water capacity, or fire safety access'. Mr Hearne's points were well made — we have seen plenty of exploitation in terms of what is being offered in the rental market to those desperate for accommodation; questions of safety and infrastructure are also valid, given the kinds of structures involved. Even those who see this measure as a retrograde step must also consider the alternative, however. Almost 16,000 people are homeless in Ireland, and a huge proportion are children. Would those families be better off homeless or in these garden homes? The decisions and factors which have brought us to this point are matters for discussion, but there are far more urgent questions facing us. We have a pressing need for safe accommodation in this country when the homeless outnumber the population of places such as Castlebar, Wicklow Town, and Killarney: Can we afford to disregard any proposal? This measure may be a sticking plaster rather than a permanent cure, but that does not justify outright dismissal. As a society, are we in a position to discard even temporary measures which may house desperate families? Seán Rocks - A voice for arts There was widespread shock with the news yesterday morning of the death of Seán Rocks at the age of 64. As an actor, Rocks featured at the Abbey Theatre and Gate Theatre in Dublin, as well as the Royal Court and National Tricycle theatres in London, appearing on screen in The Bill, Glenroe, and Fair City. However, he was probably best known as a broadcaster. Rocks presented RTÉ Radio One arts programme Arena since it was launched in 2009. Over the years he interviewed dozens of artists of all kinds, including Salman Rushdie, Edna O'Brien, Frank McGuinness, Roddy Doyle, Rupert Everett, Martin Sheen, and Brendan Gleeson. Rocks' rich Monaghan voice was unmistakable and instantly evocative, a suitable successor to other Northern accents in RTÉ's arts slot, such as Benedict Kiely. In June, this newspaper featured an interview with Rocks in the 'Culture That Made Me' slot, where his comments on novelist Claire Keegan could just as easily be applied to his own output. Keegan's writing, he said, 'possesses such integrity. The stories she tells are so wonderfully condensed. Not a word too much. Never a melodrama, just this economic, potent, thought-through sentence after sentence.' Condolences to his family and friends.
