Sabalenka's Wimbledon foe is Carson Branstine, a qualifier from California, Canada and Texas A&M
LONDON (AP) — There are plenty of tennis players who might be daunted by the prospect of making their Grand Slam debut against someone ranked No. 1 and in a big stadium — in this case, Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon's No. 1 Court.
Carson Branstine, though, is embracing the circumstances she'll find herself in Monday. Branstine, 24, is a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen — she was born in California and represents Canada, where her mother is from — and helped Texas A&M win the 2024 NCAA title. She is ranked just inside the top 200, but made it into the women's bracket at the
All England Club
by winning three matches in qualifying last week.
'It's not like I'm a beginner. This is my job, too. We're playing the same tournament, right? It's just exciting. It's cool. And I love that for myself,' Branstine said. 'You never know what can happen. And I like it. I wouldn't want it any other way. This is the coolest thing.'
Besides, facing, and eliminating, the top seed is becoming routine lately for her: This is the third consecutive event this month where Branstine is going up against a foe seeded No. 1. She beat Liudmila Samsonova at a grass-court tournament in the Netherlands, then started off Wimbledon qualifying by defeating
Loïs Boisson
, who was coming off a surprising run to the French Open semifinals.
'Well, of course I go out with: Why not? Because there's a lot of factors in tennis, more than just playing. You never know what can be happening on each side, behind closed doors. It's Wimbledon. It's (Sabalenka's) first round; you've seen a lot of players have tight matches in their first rounds against players that you'd never imagine that (it) would be close,' Branstine said. 'That could easily happen on Monday. You never know. With my game, maybe God's going to come down and say, 'You're going to have the best tennis of your life. You're not going to miss a single ball right now.''
Branstine credits her big serve and confidence to match with driving her recent success.
When Sabalenka — a
three-time Grand Slam champion
and the runner-up to Coco Gauff at Roland-Garros three weeks ago — was asked Saturday what she knows about Branstine, her playing style was not what came to mind.
'I know that she's super pretty,' Sabalenka replied with a laugh. 'The other day, I opened social media, and she was giving an interview. ... I was like, 'Oh, my God, this girl is so beautiful.' ... That's all I know so far.'
Sabalenka planned to discuss tactics with her team and watch some of Branstine's past matches to familiarize herself with what to expect on court.
'It's not easy to face someone you've never seen before,' said Sabalenka, who missed Wimbledon a year ago because of an injured shoulder. 'I know that I'll be prepared for her game.'
This is the sort of stage Branstine thought about getting to when she was a kid attending the tournament in Indian Wells.
'You go and you see those big courts and you imagine, 'What if that was me? That's my dream. I want to do that one day.' And now it's here,' she said. 'So it's a dream I get to check off my list, and no matter what happens, I'm going to have that for the rest of my life: I got to play the No. 1 player at Court 1 at Wimbledon. It's pretty cool. So I just want to embrace it, really. I just want to take in the moment and play every single point. It's still another match. ... And, you know, you never know what can happen.'

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Mitch Garver hit a two-run homer in the 12th and drove in four runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Sunday to win a series in which all three games went to extra innings. Cincinnati's Elly De La Cruz led off the ninth with an infield single that originally was scored an error by Padres third baseman Tyler Wade. De La Cruz scored the tying run on a one-out RBI single by Spencer Steer, and after Jose Trevino singled to load the bases, Benson ripped a single down the right-field line for his third hit of the game to score Gavin Lux and lift the Reds to the victory in the rubber match of the three-game series. The last double-digit streak in one season by a Detroit lefty was Earl Whitehill's 11-start stretch in 1930. The strikeouts matched Skubal's career high, last done on May 25 in his 94-pitch shutout against the Guardians. Chris Paddack (3-7) gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings for the Twins. Scrumhalf Tomos Williams out of British and Irish Lions tour with a hamstring injury
Associated Press BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Tomos Williams has been ruled out of the British and Irish Lions rugby tour of Australia after injuring his left hamstring in the opening win over Western Force in Perth on the weekend. Lions management confirmed Monday while announcing the squad to play Queensland that the Welsh scrumhalf had sustained a tour-ending injury and Toulon, France-based Scotland scrumhalf Ben White had been drafted into the squad. 'This is desperately sad news for Tomos and we wish him all the very best in his recovery," Lions tour manager Ieuan Evans said. "Tomos is an exemplary Lion who has had a brilliant season having joined the tour after being named as Premiership Rugby's player-of-the-season. 'He lit up this Lions Tour with both his personality and his talent.' Williams scored two tries in the 54-7 win over the Perth-based Force, limping off after finishing off a long-range try early in the second half. The Lions are playing nine matches in Australia, including three test matches on July 19, 26 and Aug. 2. Head coach Andy Farrell recalled tour captain Maro Itoje to lead the Lions on Wednesday night against Queensland in Brisbane, and he'll pack down in the second row with fellow Englishman Ollie Chessum. US gets past Costa Rica in Gold Cup quarterfinals on penalty kicks
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Damion Downs scored in the sixth round of a shootout after three saves by Matt Freese, sending the U.S. to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 4-3 penalty-kicks win over Costa Rica after a a 2-2 tie on Sunday night. The U.S. advanced to a Wednesday matchup in St. Louis against Guatemala, which upset Canada on penalty kicks in the opener of the quarterfinal doubleheader. 'They showed today great character,' U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said. Mexico plays Honduras in the other semifinal on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. The championship is in Houston on July 6. The U.S. has reached the semifinals in 17 of 18 Gold Cups, including 13 straight since a quarterfinal loss to Colombia on penalty kicks in 2000. Diego Luna and Max Arfsten scored in regulation for the U.S., which faced its highest-ranked opponent of the tournament in Costa Rica (54th) after breezing through the group stage with an 8-1 goal differential. Alonso Martinez scored the tying goal for the Ticos in the 71st minute with a left-footed shot after Carlos Mora split Luca de La Torre and Arsten to take a shot on Freese and seize the rebound to set up Martinez. The Ticos played without four key players. Forward Manfred Ugalde, who had three goals in the tournament, and midfielder Carlos Mora were suspended for yellow-card accumulation. Defender Ariel Lassiter (broken left hand) and forward Warren Madrigal (broken left leg) were sidelined by injuries. Three of Costa Rica's six goals during the group stage came by penalty kick, and Francisco Calvo added another one in the 12th minute after a foul by Arsten. Calvo went low to zip the ball just out of reach of a diving Freese. Malik Tillman, who had three group stage goals, put a 37th-minute penalty kick off a post and Navas knocked away Arfsten's attempt off the rebound. Luna picked him up with his first goal in international competition by rocketing a shot off the chest of defender Alexis Gamboa for the equalizer in the 43rd minute. Tillman made amends for his miss early in the second half by poking a pass ahead for Arfsten, who surged in from the left wing to send the ball into the opposite corner for the lead. ___
