'Hot Milk' Review - Familiar Threads Tied Together By Propulsive Performances
Set in the scorching summer heat, in the Spanish seaside town of Almería, Sofia takes her mother Rose to consult with a shamanic doctor who possibly holds the cure to the mysterious illness that has left her in a wheelchair. The years of caring for her ill have zapped Sofia of any spirit or zest for life. However, that all changes when she meets Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), an enigmatic traveler who helps her shed her inhibitions and sets her on a course to break free from her controlling mother. As she wrestles with her guilt, resentments, and bitter trauma, the mother-daughter relationship begins to spiral out of control. Fiona Shaw and Emma Mackey in Rebecca Lenkiewicz's HOT MILK. The greatest strength of Hot Milk is the pairing of Mackey and Shaw as daughter and mother. Their relationship is built on fragile grounds, and the film brings us into the fold from the start. Instantly, we are aware of the fractuous nature made as a result of Rose's condition. Through her dealings with the doctor (Vincent Perez) and her own conflicting statements, we begin to realize Rose's condition is more psychological than physiological. The tension is equivalent to someone dropping a match in a closet and letting the flame slowly burn until the house becomes completely engulfed.
Mackey projects a cautious demeanor at the start. Even as her patience grows paper-thin with her mother, she wears a mask. Her point of view is directionless as she goes through life, merely counting the days. At one point, her character is stung by a jellyfish, and it is in this moment that we see that Sofia is desperate to feel anything, even pain. Her life is a series of tragedies and entrapments; she sees the world moving past her while she remains in neutral, not unlike her mother. Enter Ingrid, who, as a character, is essentially an enigma, but she is not there to reveal much about herself or add little more than tangential specks to the story. Her function is a trigger for Sofia. As they fall into an intimate relationship, Sofia learns more about herself and ends up seeing Ingrid as a mirror image of herself. A woman beset by tragedy, forever living in the past. This revelation is a jumping-off point for Sofia, who sheds her wallflower demeanor and blossoms.
Now the film is clever as it never endorses nor rejects Sofia's transformation. Here is where the film works best as a character study. The destructive and controlling nature of Rose leads Sofia into a dark place. As the summer heat takes its toll, we see a change. Rose, for her part, remains the same, ultimately making this Sofia's story. She is the one transforming and, in a way, becoming free. Vicky Krieps and Emma Mackey in Rebecca Lenkiewicz's HOT MILK. Conversely, the film suffers in part by playing with familiar material we have seen in countless films. Portrait of a Lady on Fire comes to mind. So, in a way, Hot Milk is not stale, but repetitive. In addition, the ending is likely to make it or break it for audiences. It is far from a shocking conclusion, but some may question if the construction of the story justifies it. For this observer, the ending has a payoff that, while expected, is the perfect conclusion for Sofia's character. Again, Mackey commands our full attention and leaves in both shock and awe.
Hot Milk is unlikely to start a whirlwind of discussion based on its plot, but the intricate nature of the story and the arresting performances give it something to say. Shaw proves indomitable, and Mackey is a wonderful chameleon as she blossoms from a wallflower into a wily wildflower.
Hot Milk is currently playing in select theaters courtesy of IFC Films.

Love Island USA 's Pepe Reacts to Claim He Only Dates Blondes
Originally appeared on E! Online This gentleman doesn't necessarily prefer blondes. Though Pepe Garcia-Gonzalez was coupled up with not one, not two, but three blonde women on Love Island USA, the retired basketball player set the record straight on the claim he's only interested in blondes. "I don't have a type," Pepe exclusively told E! News, before describing his past partners outside of the villa. "I've dated three women in my life—well, I guess now four. They have all looked completely different." And although current partner Iris Kendall—with whom he placed fourth during the season seven finale on July 13—has light hair just like his Love Island exes Hannah Fields and Gracyn Blackmore, Pepe clarified it wasn't their appearances that caught his eye. "I did go in there and just said, 'I'm going to lead with my heart and not my head,'" the Madrid native explained. "I just kept going for sweet, genuine, caring women. And for whatever reason, they were all blonde, but that was just what my heart was going for." More from E! "We both kind of date the same way, where you date one person and you ride out that wave with them until it either continues or just dies down slowly," Pepe shared. "We just want to see what happens. We want to try to date like we normally would have two months ago, before this craziness." While Pepe aims to "see where it goes" with Iris, he hopes to continue to be friends with Hannah, with whom he developed a strong bond before she was dumped from the villa. "I appreciate the time I had with Hannah," he added. "The time we had in there, whatever amount of days it was, it feels like a lot longer, but you continue to live the experience and continue to move on. Just happy I stayed and got to meet Iris." An 18-Year-Old Multimillionaire Soccer Player Is Being Investigated For Allegedly Hiring People With Dwarfism To Perform At His Birthday Party, And The Whole Thing Sounds Outrageous
It's safe to say that Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old Spanish soccer star, is living a life far different than your average teen. For context, Lamine is currently regarded as one of the best soccer players in the world and plays for Barcelona, one of the sport's top clubs. Talented teenagers aren't unusual in professional soccer; however, Lamine has broken numerous records, like being the youngest ever player to feature at a UEFA European Championship, and the youngest ever goalscorer in a European Championship, both when he was just 16 years old. Related: Lamine is reported to be worth around $8 million, and so, it'll come as no surprise to hear that he went all out for his 18th birthday party last Sunday. However, the Barcelona star is set to be the subject of a government investigation following reports that he hired people with dwarfism to attend the party as entertainers. Related: According to the BBC, the birthday party took place at a rented property in a small town just northwest of Barcelona, with a ton of influencers, YouTubers, and several of Lamine's Barcelona teammates in attendance. It's been reported that guests were banned from filming on their phones at the event; however, numerous videos have since surfaced, including one, published by the Daily Mail, which appears to show a group of men with dwarfism arriving at the venue with luggage. The video footage has been making the rounds on social media, and now, Spain's Ministry for Social Rights has requested that the country's prosecutor's office launch an investigation into Lamine to determine if his party breached disability laws, which prohibit the mocking or denigrating of people with disabilities. BBC Sport reported that the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE) has filed a legal complaint against the soccer player and 'publicly denounces the hiring of people with dwarfism as part of the entertainment,' saying that it 'perpetuates stereotypes, fuels discrimination, and undermines the image and rights' of people with disabilities. Neither Lamine nor FC Barcelona has spoken out about the controversy. However, a Spanish radio station called RAC1 broadcast an interview with a person claiming to be one of the 'artists with dwarfism who was hired' to attend the party. The individual, who chose to remain anonymous, defended Lamine's alleged actions, saying: 'No one disrespected us… I don't understand why there's so much hype. We're normal people, who do what we want, in an absolutely legal way.' Yamal Inherits Barcelona's Iconic No. 10 Jersey, Once Worn By Messi
Lamine Yamal will switch to the No. 10 jersey at Barcelona, the same number Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi wore for the Catalan club. "I'll try to build my own path, but all kids would like to be like them," Yamal said Wednesday at the club's announcement. "All three have been incredible players, they're legends, and I'll try to follow in their footsteps." Having turned 18, Yamal was able to sign the contract extension that he had agreed to with Barcelona in May, keeping him in place until 2031. "My goal is to keep winning and growing," Yamal said. "It's the club of my life. It's my home; I've been here since I was 7 years old." Yamal wore the No. 19 jersey last season. The No. 10 most recently was with Ansu Fati, who will play on loan with Monaco. Yamal, accompanied by his family, received the No. 10 jersey from club president Joan Laporta. The announcement comes after Yamal was criticized for reportedly hiring people with dwarfism as entertainers during his lavish 18th birthday party last weekend. Yamal sidestepped the controversy on Wednesday. "In the end, I work for Barça, but when I'm away from the club's training center, I enjoy my life and that's it," Yamal said. "I'm indifferent to both criticism and praise if they don't come from my family or people close to me." Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
