Human trafficking accused in Kempton Park court after 19 Ethiopians rescued
According to Kempton Express, the case relates to the rescue of 19 Ethiopian men who were found held captive in a house in Birchleigh North last Friday.
The victims were allegedly lured to South Africa under false pretences, assaulted, and held while their captors demanded large sums of money from their families for their release.
During his brief appearance in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court, the accused's case was postponed to next Friday for a formal bail application.
The police's crime intelligence unit continues to investigate the matter.
The rescue followed after Freedom Front Plus councillor for Kempton Park Jean Kriek received reports of people calling for help from inside the property. Kriek went to the house to investigate and immediately contacted the police, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and a private security company for assistance.
The men were taken to hospital for treatment following their ordeal.

Two suspects arrested for kidnapping and murder in Eastern Cape
Two suspects, aged 32 and 33, were arrested in Qumbu, Eastern Cape, for kidnapping two men, one of whom tragically lost his life. The suspects abducted the victims in Qumbu Central Business District. They accused the victims of stealing a sling bag containing two cell phones and cash. After an intensive search, the police located the first victim at his home in Marambeni earlier in June 2025. The 20-year-old victim was found with severe injuries and was hospitalised. The decomposing body of the 22-year-old second victim was found by a community member in dongas (erosion channels) in Mahlungulu. He was found with his hands and legs bound by a rope. The first suspect, Tembalethu Ncudu (32), was arrested on 4 June 2025 and appeared at Qumbu Magistrate's Court on the same day. Taxi owner Sifiso Nene (33) from Mahlungulu, the second suspect, was arrested on 15 June 2025. Both suspects are facing charges of kidnapping and murder. They are currently in custody awaiting their formal bail application, which will be filed on Monday, 14 July 2025, at Qumbu Magistrate's Court. Two suspects made their court appearance before the Praktiseer Magistrate's Court in Tubatse on Friday, 11 July 2025, due to suspected hijacking of a motor vehicle and for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Members of the Tubase tracing team were summoned to Extension 10, Burgersfort, after receiving information about suspicious motor vehicles in the area. Upon arrival, the suspects saw the police and immediately fled the scene, leaving the white polo Volkswagen, suspected to be hijacked, behind. 'The vehicle was tested and it was confirmed to have been reported hijacked during June 2025 in the Tubatse policing area,' read the police statement. Motau was arrested at Extension 10 and was charged with possession of a hijacked vehicle. Mongadi was arrested at a tavern in Riba Cross and is currently facing charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. KZN induna (72) shot dead in suspected targeted attack
Police have confirmed the fatal shooting of a well-known community leader and member of the Masihambisane Taxi Association in what appears to be a targeted hit near the Anandale area outside Dannhauser in KZN yesterday afternoon. According to Northern Natal News, the victim, identified as 72-year-old Siphiwe Ezra Nyembe, served as the induna of the Emalangeni Tribal Authority. Police reports indicate Nyembe was driving along the Jan gravel road when he came under attack from occupants of a black sedan that had been trailing him. Multiple gunshots were fired, causing his vehicle to veer off the road. He sustained gunshot wounds to the neck and chin and was transported to Nellie's Clinic, where he was declared dead on arrival. Crime scene investigators recovered nine cartridge casings at the scene. Police have opened a murder case and are urging members of the public who may have information to come forward. Ward committee member, municipal driver nabbed for diesel theft in Umbumbulu
TWO men, a Ward 96 committee member and an eThekwini Municipality water tanker driver, were arrested in Sawpits, Umbumbulu, for allegedly siphoning diesel from a municipal water tanker recently. Also read: Man arrested for cable theft in Isipingo The arrests follow an investigation by the city's Integrity and Investigations Directorate, which had received several reports about municipal truck drivers offloading diesel at a private property in the area. The operation, led by the director of the unit, Jimmy Ngcobo, resulted in the discovery of multiple 25-litre containers filled with diesel at the scene. The fuel was allegedly being resold for R400 per container to a local truck owner. 'The culprits were found in a private house offloading diesel. It is clear that they have been frequenting this property. The containers were confiscated and handed over to the police for evidence,' said Ngcobo. A criminal case of diesel theft was opened at the Umbumbulu police station. The suspects, who also allegedly attempted to bribe officials with R50 000, have since appeared in court. Ngcobo commended the community for reporting the illegal activities. 'We are dealing with fraud and corruption activities, and we are in pursuit of other culprits. This is a clear misuse of municipal resources,' he said. He confirmed that the suspects had previously been under investigation for allegedly selling water directly from municipal tankers. The municipality has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on the abuse of public resources and continues to clamp down on corruption within its structures.
