The Union of Arab Banks (UAB) announced the selection of Yaser Alsharifi, Chairman of the Bahrain Association of Banks, as the representative of the Bahraini banking sector at the Union.
Alsharifi received an official letter from Dr. Wissam H. Fattouh, Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Banks, congratulating him on his appointment as a member of the Union's Board of Directors in its eighteenth term. In the message, Dr. Fattouh welcomed Alsharifi as the representative of the Bahraini banking sector and commended his anticipated role in strengthening the Union's efforts to advance Arab cooperation and establish a solid foundation for the Union to fulfil its mission in supporting the development of Arab economies and societies.
In a statement issued on the occasion, Alsharifi underscored his commitment to sharing Bahrain's pioneering experiences in the banking industry, fostering the exchange of best practices, and collaborating with fellow board members to shape forward-looking banking policies that respond to global economic shifts and promote sustainable development across the Arab region.
Alsharifi took part in the 120th ordinary meeting of the Board of Directors of the Union of Arab Banks, during which key leadership positions were elected as part of the Union's eighteenth term. This included the election of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Board, the selection of Board members to serve on the Executive Committee, as well as the appointment of the Chair and Vice-Chair of that committee. The meeting also saw the election of members and the Chair of the Audit Committee, and the formation of the Investment Committee tasked with mobilising financial resources, including the election of its Chair and members. In addition, a memorandum of understanding was signed to establish the Islamic Banks Committee, and two members were nominated to join the Board of Trustees of the Arab Academy for Administrative, Financial and Banking Sciences.
Alsharifi also participated in the Arab Banking Conference 2025, held in Cairo under the patronage of Mr. Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt. Convened under the theme 'Public-Private Partnerships for Financing the Economy,' the conference brought together an esteemed assembly of leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders from across the Arab financial landscape.
The conference featured awards ceremony recognising the recipient of the 'Arab Investment and Banking Personality' accolade, followed by a series of high-level sessions. The first addressed 'The Role of Public-Private Partnerships in Financing Economic Growth,' while the second explored 'The Contribution of Islamic Banking to Financing the Economy and Sustainable Development.' The second day included a session on 'Innovative Financing Mechanisms for Public-Private Partnerships,' a panel on 'The Role of Multilateral Development Banks and International Financial Institutions in Financing PPP Projects,' and concluded with a session examining 'The Regulatory and Policy Framework for Enabling Effective Partnerships.'

They described the initiative as a life-changing experience that not only elevated their businesses but also empowered them with mentorship, new networks, and confidence to grow sustainably. The "Imtiaz" Initiative, launched by the Supreme Council for Women under the leadership of HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of HM the King and President of the Council, aims to celebrate, support, and promote young female entrepreneurs in Bahrain. A Boost to Business and Confidence Hessa Al Binflah, founder and CEO of HFD Design Studio, said winning the Imtiaz award marked a turning point in her career. 'It shined a light on my achievements and gave me a roadmap to grow. Through expert mentorship and networking opportunities, I gained insights that would've taken years to uncover on my own,' she explained. She encouraged fellow businesswomen to apply, saying: 'Even participating opens doors to invaluable learning and growth.' Fatima Al Ansari, owner of Fatima Al Ansari Design Studio, described Imtiaz as a game-changer. 'The award boosted my credibility, expanded my client base, and gave my brand stronger visibility both locally and regionally,' she said. For her, Imtiaz was more than a business award — it was a recognition of her impact on society. 'True success is measured by the positive change we bring to our communities,' she said. Creating Impact and Broadening Horizons Dr. Sarah Al Reifi, who runs a women's health center, described her Imtiaz win as a transformative milestone. 'The support, workshops, and expert guidance helped me enhance my center's operations and plan for long-term growth,' she said. The privilege of using the Imtiaz seal on her official branding boosted her center's credibility and visibility in the region — even opening doors to international markets. Mariam Al Mansoori, founder of Jomon, a plant-based dairy alternative brand, said receiving the Imtiaz award gave her a deep sense of responsibility. 'The initiative guided me to re-evaluate my priorities, improve quality, and think bigger,' she said. She also praised the Council's continuous support, especially through networking events and exposure to investors and international business forums. A Platform for Real Change Dr. Mai Ibrahim Mattar, founder of Lightbox Radiology Center, valued the comprehensive evaluation and feedback she received through Imtiaz. 'It helped refine my business strategy and expand our medical services,' she shared. For her, the initiative breaks stereotypes about women in business and showcases their ability to lead and innovate. Lulwa Al Manai, a leather accessories designer and founder of a fashion startup, said Imtiaz helped her brand stand out and gain access to global fashion exhibitions. 'The media and marketing support gave my project credibility, while the business guidance helped boost sales and attract investors,' she said. On a personal level, she credited the program for inspiring her to pursue a master's degree in luxury business in Italy, enriching her expertise in the fashion industry. A Message to Aspiring Entrepreneurs The winners united in encouraging other young women to join the fifth edition of Imtiaz. They highlighted the unique blend of professional development, strategic advice, and community engagement offered by the initiative. More than a competition, Imtiaz is a launchpad for Bahraini women to innovate, lead, and leave a mark on their country's economic future. "Participation alone can be transformative," they said, calling on all aspiring Bahraini women entrepreneurs to take the leap — because this journey could open doors beyond imagination.

The announcement came during a high-level reception hosted at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce headquarters on Tuesday, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The event brought together leading Bahraini and American business figures and marked the unveiling of transformative partnerships in technology, aviation, infrastructure, and industrial investment. Strategic collaborations The reception featured the signing of landmark agreements, including a digital solutions project for Bahrain's government telecoms network with Cisco and the development of a major undersea fibre-optic cable linking Bahrain to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. The cable, stretching 800 kilometres, is being executed in partnership with U.S.-based SubCom. New air connectivity was also unveiled, with plans to launch direct flights between Bahrain and New York. This move is expected to boost business and tourism ties while underscoring Bahrain's ambitions to become a central regional hub for U.S. firms. Aluminium and capital flow In addition to infrastructure deals, Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat announced USD 2 billion in strategic cooperation with U.S. firms focused on aluminium-related downstream industries. Meanwhile, Bahrain-based private and financial institutions are investing USD 10.7 billion in various American ventures, reinforcing a two-way channel of economic cooperation. On behalf of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy, expressed Bahrain's appreciation for the Chamber's hospitality and urged U.S. firms to capitalise on the kingdom's open economy and trade agreements. A legacy of partnership HRH Prince Salman highlighted that the Bahrain-U.S. relationship, rooted in over 130 years of ties, continues to deepen through private-sector engagement. He reaffirmed the kingdom's commitment to building economic bridges through collaborative investments and the exchange of expertise. The event also included the presence of His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Minister of the Prime Minister's Court, and senior officials from both nations. The deals announced reflect Bahrain's growing role as a regional entry point for American enterprise and digital infrastructure projects. These announcements signal not only Bahrain's economic ambitions but also its strategic positioning in a shifting global investment landscape.

Rasha Al Amad, Chief of Strategic Planning at the Bahrain Space Agency (BSA), has been appointed to chair the committee, which includes representatives from eight Arab space agencies. She will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Arab Space Strategic Plan. The committee aims to coordinate efforts at both national and regional levels to enhance collaboration, positioning the Arab region as a competitive force in the global space sector. Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, CEO of BSA, welcomed the appointment as recognition of the Agency's strong regional capabilities. He underscored BSA's commitment to close cooperation with Arab space agencies to establish a unified space strategy that promotes innovation, capacity-building, and enhances the region's position in global scientific and technological advancement. He further noted that through this structured and collaborative process, the committee will work on establishing a comprehensive and unified strategy for the Arab space sector. This will include consultations with member states to define shared goals, aligning regional ambitions with global trends, and developing a clear roadmap that supports the sustainable growth of the sector across the region. Al Amad expressed her honour in leading the committee, highlighting its key role in shaping the future of the Arab space sector. She stressed the importance of strong cooperation among member states, a structured approach to strategy development, and consistent coordination throughout its implementation. She added that once the strategy is approved, the committee will oversee its implementation, monitor progress using agreed performance indicators, assess results, and issue regular reports on achievements and areas for improvement. This approach will ensure the Arab Space Strategic Plan remains flexible and responsive to changing regional and global developments. This leadership role underscores the BSA's growing expertise in space governance, strategic planning, and international collaboration. It is worth noting that the Agency played a key role in formulating Bahrain's National Space Policy and its regulatory framework, laying the groundwork for sustainable development in this vital sector.
