South Carolina's Raven Johnson brings energy in March Madness beatdown of Tennessee Tech
Johnson, once again, produced on the game's biggest stage as the top-seeded Gamecocks thoroughly routed No. 16 Tennessee Tech 108-48 on Friday.
The 5-foot-9 junior scored 8 points and added 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in the win, which sent the Gamecocks to a second-round matchup against No. 9 Indiana on Sunday. Joyce Edwards led all scorers with 22 points with MiLaysia Fulwiley adding 15, Tessa Johnson chipping in 11 and Chloe Kitts putting up 10.
Last year, Johnson netted 14 points in the Sweet 16 and 13 points in the Final Four en route to the Gamecocks wining their third national championship under head coach Dawn Staley.
Statistically, Johnson has had a down year in terms of point production, averaging just 4.9 points in the regular season. But that has not stopped her from being one of the most critical pieces of the Gamecocks' game plan.
'My mindset is we just have to win,' she said before Friday's game. 'I have got to help my team win by any means necessary. I don't start, so I get to see a lot of things happening before I get in.'
Early in Friday's game, Tennessee Tech had no idea what hit them as Johnson, on back-to-back plays, ripped shots out of the hands of Tennessee Tech shooters before finding Kitts under the basket on otherworldly passes.
'We got pieces, we got threats, we got guards that actually get down. I feel like we do all the little things," Johnson said. "We do whatever it takes to win."

3 safeties the Raiders should consider signing after significant injury
Las Vegas Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. suffered a serious leg injury during the team's mock-game training camp practice at Allegiant Stadium over the weekend. It's since been confirmed that Johnson suffered a broken fibula, according to numerous reports. He'll now be sidelined for multiple months, leaving behind a significant hole in the defense. Johnson was writing one of the more heartwarming stories of training camp. The veteran journeyman was earning a legitimate role in Pete Carroll's defense. Now, the Raiders have Isaiah Pola-Mao and Jeremy Chinn healthy at safety and not much else. General manager John Spytek should consider signing a safety to replace Johnson in the lineup. We've identified three potential options. Quandre Diggs is the most likely option. The veteran safety played five seasons (2019-23) for Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks, qualifying for three consecutive Pro Bowls during that tenure. Diggs suffered a season-ending injury with the Tennessee Titans last year, but was recently cleared to return in 2025. Justin Simmons played legitimately good football for the Atlanta Falcons last season, but he's been taking a patient approach in free agency this offseason. Simmons is waiting for the right mixture of opportunity and money to reveal itself. The injury to Johnson could create mutual interest in Vegas. The 32-year-old Marcus Maye played for the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers last season. Maye appeared in 11 contests with the Dolphins before being released and joining L.A. He possesses a similar skill-set to Johnson and could play a protected role near the line of scrimmage.

The MRI results for Lonnie Johnson Jr 'significant' leg injury and his timeline for return
Moments after Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr laid on the field Saturday afternoon during the team's mock game, it was clear his injury was serious. After the game, head coach Pete Carroll said the injury was "significant", The question was simply what kind of significant injury was it and what it would mean for his 2025 season and beyond. The MRI results are in and it's a broken fibula for Johnson, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. This is not great news, but it could have been a lot worse. There were undoubtedly plenty of fears of an injury that was season-ending. Typically the recovery time for a broken fibula is about two months. And we are still over a month from the start of the season, which means there's a possibility Johnson could only miss 4-5 games. Still, Johnson had just spoken to the media the day before the game and was very excited about the opportunity he had in Las Vegas to get his career back on track. He was slated to be a starter and rotational safety along with Isaiah Pola-Mao and Jeremy Chinn. "With me playing my role on different teams and starting, and then having to go to straight special teams for three years straight, and now I've got an opportunity to go earn a better contract for myself this year," Johnson said of his career struggle. "I think Pete [Carroll] has been trying to chase me for so long, and he finally got an opportunity to, like, put his hands on my game. So, everything is just complementing, and like I said, I get a chance to just earn it and prove that I'm their guy. I never really had the opportunity to show a team. I've always been, 'Hey, he's a role player.' I've got an opportunity to show like I'm Pete's guy, I'm M-Rob's guy, I'm Spytek's guy, so that's what I'm here to do." This will be one more hurdle the seven-year vet will have to clear in his efforts to find a long term NFL home.
