Malaysian shuttler Leong Jun Hao ready to face France's Lanier in Japan Open first round

Malay Mail2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 — National shuttler Leong Jun Hao is expecting a tough time against defending champion Alex Lanier of France in the Japan Open 2025 but says he is ready for the challenge.
Jun Hao, 25, described Lanier as a player with 'strength and power' but felt that his injury-free condition allows him to fully focus on delivering his best in the tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
The Malaysian, who will meet Lanier in the first round, had been eliminated as early as the round of 16 in previous Japan Open tournaments.
'So far, training has been going well. Coach Kenneth Jonassen has also been focusing on both on-court and off-court aspects, especially improving fitness,' he said.
Jun Hao said he did not feel any extra pressure as the sole Malaysian men's singles representative in the tournament.
'But the experience of defeating higher-ranked players before this will surely help me on court,' he told reporters at Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara today.
The world number 24 admitted that the competition in men's singles has become increasingly intense, and he is taking it as an opportunity to constantly prove his abilities.
'I think maybe among the top 50 to 60, everyone can play at a high level; no match is easy. So, I feel every game is a tough one, especially physically. Recovery becomes very important,' he added.
According to the Badminton World Federation website, Malaysia's professional men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has withdrawn from the Japan Open.
However, Team LZJ has not issued any statement on the matter.
Speculation about Zii Jia's condition has arisen following a cryptic post on his social media account. — Bernama

Adam Jaya back as Davis Cup captain

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national tennis player Adam Jaya has been appointed as Davis Cup team captain for Malaysia. The national squad will be competing in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group IV competition at National Tennis Centre (NTC) here on July 16-19. Despite earlier plans to appoint Koay Hao Sheng as playing captain, national head coach Muliyadi Jamal said the vastly experienced Adam was called in to help the squad. "Yes we did initially plan to have Hao Sheng as playing captain, however, we do not want to burden him as he is also our key player," said Muliyadi during a press conference at NTC today (July 12). "We need him to remain focused on playing as he will likely be fielded in singles and doubles. "This is why, after discussion with the Tennis Malaysia (TM) committee, we have decided to bring in Adam. "He is very experienced and has captained both our Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup sides at least seven or eight times now. We need his services." Malaysia, relegated from Group III for the first time in history last year, are top seeds. Pacific Oceania have been seeded second while the other teams in the competition are Iraq, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Qatar and the Philippines. The countries will be split into two groups. The draw will be held on Tuesday (July 15). "Although we are the top seeds, I believe Philippines will be the favourites," said Muliyadi. "As they are unseeded, they can be placed into any group. It would actually benefit us if they are drawn in the same group as us. "This way we will not have to face them in the promotional playoffs." The Philippines tennis federation was suspended by the ITF in late 2020 due to governance issues. The suspension was lifted in January last year which is why they are currently making their way back up from the lower divisions in both men's and women's tennis. The top-two teams from each group will qualify for the promotional playoffs - essentially the semi-finals. The last two teams standing will be promoted to Group III. Muliyadi is hoping his players will rise to the occasion. "This is the first time Malaysia is playing in Group IV and I have told the players that we have to make it back to Group III. That is imperative," said Muliyadi. "When we were relegated last year, we saw the impact it brought. The association and the players were badly criticised by the public. "We have home ground advantage and hopefully that will boost our players to go for promotion." Besides Hao Sheng, Leroy Yong, Darrshan Kumar, Daniel Prickett, Naufal Kamaruzzaman and Devesh Sarawanan have been shortlisted for the squad. Muliyadi will announce the final five-man squad on Tuesday.

Japan Open crucial test for Malaysia badminton stars ahead of World Championships

DOUBLES coaching director Rexy Mainaky has challenged national players to give their best at next week's Japan Open to build their confidence for the World Championships 2025 to be held in August. He said the Japan Open, a Super 750 event, has attracted the world's elite players and would be a good venue for players to gauge their preparedness for the world meet. 'We can see that so far, no top-level players have withdrawn from the tournament. People say this is a kind of benchmark for every country before the World Championships,' he said. Rexy said that judging from Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik's recent form, the pair should do well in Japan. 'But we can say everyone is targeting them now. If they can maintain their momentum, they can get good results,' he told reporters at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara today. Among the players set to compete at the Japan Open are Badminton Association of Malaysia's top men's pairs Aaron-Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, as well as the country's top women's pair, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah. Earlier, national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi had challenged his charges to win a title either at the Japan Open or the China Open. Commenting on the Japan Open draw, Rexy said it is inevitable that sometimes Malaysians could be pitted against another pair or player from their own country in the opening round. He said that regardless of their opponents, players should be physically and mentally prepared, as the competition is now more intense. 'Nowadays, it's not just BAM players — there are also professional players. So, early-round matchups between Malaysians at big tournaments like this are inevitable. It's not an excuse but rather a challenge that must be faced with the right mindset,' he said. One of the Malaysia vs Malaysia clashes will feature professional pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi taking on Aaron-Wooi Yik. - Bernama
