Mayfair apartment by famed art deco architect on market for £24.75m

The National14-02-2025
An art deco-style apartment located a short walk from London's renowned Ritz hotel is up for sale at £24.75 million ($31.1 million). The four-bedroom, 4,209 square foot show property in the Mayfair are of the UK capital stands on the site of the once famous restaurant Mirabelle, which counted Winston Churchill and Orson Welles among its regular diners. The apartment is one of 32 residences in 60 Curzon, the only private residential building in Europe designed by French architect Thierry Despont, who was renowned for his art deco interiors and projects including Claridge's, Ritz Paris and the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. He died in 2023 at the age of 75, before 60 Curzon was completed. The development, with a Portland stone facade, features a 20-metre swimming pool, spa and gym. It was built from scratch and completed in June last year. So far, about half of the homes, 17, have been completed, exchanged or reserved. Owners of properties in the Mayfair development are among good company, with Mr Despont's international projects including the private residences of Bill Gates and Calvin Klein. One of the development's two penthouses was sold as a 'shell and core' offering, allowing the buyer the opportunity to design the space to their own specifications. But the developer is taking a different tack with several of the other residences, using top interior designers to style the apartments to sell as a package. This four-bedroom property, styled by Elicyon, takes its inspiration from the building's art deco-style exterior and is the first in a series of design collaborations due to launch in the development in the coming months. Charles Leigh, director at 60 Curzon, told The National that its interiors feature a mix of period furniture and modern, bespoke cabinets, aiming to blend vintage elegance with contemporary detail. Art deco-inspired pieces include walnut side tables, a chequered oak cabinet in the guest bedroom and a scalloped antique dressing table chair. There are statement vintage items, such as a 1936 maple wood grand piano and a 300kg 19th-century Italian marble urn, as well as bespoke pieces, including olive-green glazed tile bedside cabinets by British ceramicist Matthew Raw and a custom shelving unit by Rochford Joinery. The design extends outside to the 807 sq ft terrace. Charu Gandhi, founder and director of Elicyon, said the firm aimed to create an atmosphere that reflected the vibrant and historic character of the famous site. Mr Leigh said the residence captured the 'storied elegance of Mayfair, reflecting the style of a well-travelled resident who values both historical and modern design'. 'The building is surrounded by the best that the capital has to offer, including unique shopping, dining, art and cultural experiences, all while being within minutes of two of the capital's royal parks: Green Park and Hyde Park,' he said. 'However, its appeal extends beyond the prestigious address and refined interiors. 60 Curzon boasts state-of-the-art amenities, including a pool, gym and treatment rooms." Residents can also make use of a "24-hour concierge, access to a sophisticated meeting room, and bespoke temperature-controlled storage facilities" that are ideal for items such as cigars, he added.

Sheikh Mohammed tests Etihad rail and has revealed his thoughts on the project

A royal test ride, 200km/h speed and sleek passenger stations – here's the latest on the UAE's most ambitious public transport project We may still be a little while away from hopping on board, but Etihad Rail just got a major seal of approval – from none other than His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai recently took a test journey from Dubai to Fujairah aboard the passenger train, part of the country's first national rail network set to launch in 2026. Mohammed bin Rashid boards Etihad Rail passenger train for journey between Dubai and Fujairah ahead of commercial launch in 2026. — Dubai Media Office (@DXBMediaOffice) August 2, 2025 Sheikh Mohammed said: 'We have made the journey from Dubai to Fujairah on the Etihad Rail passenger train… The train will connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE, from Al Sila to Fujairah, with a speed of 200 km/h. It is expected to carry 36 million passengers annually by 2030. 'I'm proud of our national projects. I'm proud of the Etihad Rail team led by Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed. And I'm proud of a nation that never stops working – one that adds a new brick to its future infrastructure every single day.' So where are we with Etihad Rail? Right now, the train isn't open to the public – but it's getting there. By 2026, you'll be able to zoom across the country in plush, modern comfort, skipping traffic and slashing travel times. Expect to go from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in just 57 minutes and reach Fujairah in around 105. That's a game-changer for both residents and tourists – and the network's design is all about efficiency, sustainability and connectivity. Here's what we know so far: The rail will connect 11 cities across the UAE from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the east. It's designed to carry up to 36 million passengers a year by 2030. The passenger service is expected to boost domestic tourism, potentially generating Dh24 billion in revenue over the next 50 years. While official ticket prices haven't been announced yet, the RTA's nol card is expected to be part of the payment system. And if early reports are anything to go by, the interiors will feature luxury seating, charging ports, entertainment systems and a little Italian flair – thanks to a partnership with boutique train design firm Arsenale. The bigger picture Etihad Rail isn't just about fast trips between cities. It's part of a Dh50 billion national railway programme designed to future-proof transport in the UAE – with expected economic gains of Dhs200 billion over the next 50 years. Think reduced car dependency, lower emissions and safer roads. Every freight train will take up to 300 trucks off UAE highways and the network is expected to cut land transport emissions by 21 percent annually by 2050. And with freight already in motion, it won't be long until passengers can climb aboard too. Four stations have already been confirmed and construction is in full swing. So while you won't be riding it just yet, Sheikh Mohammed's test journey shows the future of UAE travel is firmly on track – fast, sustainable and seriously stylish. Manipal Academy of Higher Education launches BA (Honours) Liberal Arts Program

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Dubai proudly announces the launch of its groundbreaking BA (Honours) Liberal Arts program at the Manipal Institute of Liberal Arts (MILA), responding to evolving global workforce demands and reinforcing Dubai's position as a premier international education hub. This innovative program, with admissions open for September 2025, marks a strategic advancement in higher education for the region. The BA (Honours) Liberal Arts program introduces a flexible major-minor framework designed to meet the World Economic Forum's 2025 Future of Jobs report findings, which reveals that 39% of current skills will become obsolete by 2030, while analytical thinking is considered essential by 70% of employers. The program begins with a comprehensive liberal arts foundation year emphasizing independent critical thinking and interdisciplinary learning, followed by three specialized pathways from the second year: the Explorer option (1 Major + 1 Minor), the Innovator pathway (1 Major + 2 Minors), and the Consolidator track (2 Majors). Current academic offerings include majors in Sociology, English, Psychology, Mass Communication, and Filmmaking, with minors in Gender Studies, Journalism, Geopolitics, Arabic, and French. Students engage in extra-disciplinary coursework each semester covering digital literacy, public policy, and creativity, while high-performing students can pursue a fourth-year Honours research track leading to original knowledge creation. 'This innovative Liberal Arts program represents our commitment to preparing graduates for the future of work,' said Prof. Elsa Ashish Thomas, Chairperson of the Manipal Institute of Liberal Arts at MAHE Dubai campus. 'As the World Economic Forum emphasizes analytical thinking, creativity, and adaptability as the most sought-after skills, our program uniquely positions students to thrive in an economy where 78 million new jobs are expected to be created by 2030, while traditional roles are being transformed by technological advancement.' The program launches against the backdrop of unprecedented growth in Dubai's higher education sector, with student enrollment surging by 20% in the 2024-25 academic year to reach a record 42,026 students across 41 institutions. International student numbers have jumped 29% and now represent 35% of the total student body, reflecting Dubai's emergence as a global education hub. The city targets 50% international student enrollment by 2033 under the Education 33 strategy. The liberal arts program directly addresses employment market trends, with recent Federal Reserve data revealing art history graduates experiencing just 3% unemployment, while philosophy majors face 3.2% unemployment, significantly outperforming many STEM fields. The four-year Honours structure allows students to develop expertise across multiple disciplines while maintaining depth in their chosen specializations, with an optional 8-week internship between Semesters 4 and 5 providing valuable real-world experience. The curriculum prepares graduates for careers in media, publishing, and content creation; social development and policy research; HR, PR, and corporate communication; academic research and postgraduate study; and counselling and applied psychology. The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies analytical thinking, technological literacy, creative problem-solving, and adaptability as key skills, all of which are core outcomes of liberal arts education. The program's design directly responds to the World Economic Forum's identification of critical business skills for 2025–2030, including analytical thinking (considered essential by 69% of employers), creative problem-solving (a key skill with 57% of employers recognizing its importance), and strategic communication (ranked as the most in-demand skill across industries) – competencies that are fundamentally strengthened through the interdisciplinary nature of liberal arts education. MAHE Dubai Campus has recently been licensed by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and is currently undergoing CAA accreditation. These developments come at a time when interdisciplinary learning is increasingly being recognised as a key pillar of modern higher education. The program builds on MAHE Dubai's longstanding emphasis on strong faculty mentorship and academic freedom, evolving these strengths into a curriculum that is interdisciplinary, globally aligned, and future-focused. With its flexible structure, industry connections, and commitment to academic excellence, the BA (Honours) Liberal Arts program sets a new benchmark for liberal arts education in the Middle East.
