Iraq denounces Israeli strike on Iran: UN must take firm measures
In a statement, Government Spokesman Basim Al-Awadi said, 'This act represents a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.'
Al-Awadi noted the timing of the attack—coinciding with ongoing US-Iran nuclear negotiations—underscores its destabilizing intent and urged the international community not to remain silent.
'Mere statements of condemnation are no longer sufficient,' he stated. 'The international position must be translated into practical and deterrent actions.'
The Iraqi government called on the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency session and take 'firm and tangible measures' to prevent further aggression and to reassert the credibility of international legal norms. Should current mechanisms fail, Baghdad urged world powers to initiate discussions on new frameworks for global accountability and justice.
Reaffirming Iraq's commitment to sovereignty, non-aggression, and peaceful dispute resolution, Al-Awadi expressed solidarity with the Iranian people and all nations 'who believe in a just international order based on respect for rules rather than their violation, and on the rule of law, not the law of the jungle.'

Our forces exercised their full right to self-defense and responded to the sources of fire,' the SDF said in a statement. The Kurdish-led force further called on Damascus to adhere to a ceasefire between the sides. The attack risks derailing a landmark integration deal signed in March between Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF chief Mazloum Abdi. The deal seeks to integrate the SDF into the Syrian state apparatus, recognizes the Kurds as an integral part of Syria, includes a countrywide ceasefire, and stipulates the return of displaced Syrians to their hometowns. The unrest follows a broader surge in sectarian clashes since transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa took office, with Suwayda —a Druze-majority province—becoming a flashpoint for conflict between local armed factions and Bedouin tribes that has drawn in government forces. Shafaq News – Damascus On Saturday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) shelled army-controlled areas in the Manbij countryside, northeast of Aleppo, injuring seven people, according to Syria's Ministry of Defense. The strike left four soldiers and three civilians wounded, the ministry claimed in a statement. In retaliation, the Syrian army carried out precision attacks targeting what it identified as the origin of the rocket and artillery fire. Describing the incident as an 'irresponsible escalation,' Damascus claimed the motives behind the assault remain unclear, accusing the SDF of destabilizing the region and violating existing de-escalation agreements. Military reinforcements have since been dispatched to the area, with operations ongoing to contain any renewed violence, the ministry added. The SDF, however, rejected the government's narrative. In a statement, the group said it acted in response to overnight shelling by 'uncontrolled elements' within Syrian army ranks, who allegedly launched more than ten artillery shells into residential neighborhoods in Deir Hafer.
