AIADMK, DMK spar over Keeladi

on Friday accused it of politicising the excavation report submitted by ASI official K Amarnath Ramakrishna.

The DMK rejected the charges, saying DMK govt allotted 27 crore in the last four years for archaeological explorations in 37 places, including Keeladi.
Addressing reporters at AIADMK headquarters, former minister Mafoi K Pandiarajan said the previous AIADMK govt was instrumental in the ongoing archaeological explorations and excavations in eight places. The govt acquired 100 acres from farmers amidst unrest and sent artefacts to advanced laboratories in the US, Singapore, and Italy for carbon dating and material analysis.
When the Centre hesitated to fund further excavations, former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami stepped in and allocated funds to continue the research by the state archaeology department, and reports were submitted to the Centre, he said.
"Only the AIADMK did excavation in Keeladi, while the DMK politicised it," Pandiarajan said, adding that the EPS govt had allotted 105 crore every year.
At Anna Arivalayam, DMK medical wing secretary and MLA N Ezhilan told reporters that Pandiarajan's statement that AIADMK allotted 105 crore for Keeladi excavation was a blatant lie.
"The AIADMK govt allotted only 55 lakh." When Union govt halted the excavations abruptly in 2016, DMK MP Kanimozhi went to the court. Only after the court directed the resumption of the excavation did the AIADMK govt continue the exercise, he said.
"TN people will never forgive EPS for betraying Tamil culture and its ancient heritage," Ezhilan added.
Pandiarajan said the previous report on Keeladi findings proved Tamil was a developed writing system 2,500 years ago. The latest report from Ramakrishna outlined a different time bracket, prompting the ASI to ask for clarification.
"You must respond. Instead, submitting the paper to (chief minister) Stalin and making him speak is nothing but politics," he said. Pandiarajan said the Union govt was not saying that Tamil was not ancient.

Stalin inaugurates projects, gives kits to DMK cadres

Stalin then held a roadshow where he interacted with school students and the public. Appreciating the booth-level agents for working "efficiently" under the 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign, Stalin distributed campaign kits to party cadres. The kits contained mobile phones, watches, and pamphlets to encourage them. Later in the day, Stalin announced that state govt would launch the third phase of the 'Maperum Tamil Kanavu' scheme on Wednesday. "With more than 50 experts from various fields, 200 colleges, and 2 lakh students, the third phase of the 'Maperum Tamil Kanavu' scheme will be launched," the chief minister posted on X. The scheme aims to promote knowledge of the Tamil language, society, and culture to college students by clearing doubts from experts after they deliver their speeches on various topics.

EPS slams DMK for halting welfare schemes, vows to revive them

The free laptop scheme helped thousands of rural students access future-ready technology. But the DMK scrapped it after coming to power." He also criticised the DMK for shutting down the Amma mini clinics. "Now the chief minister is holding one-day Nalam Kaakum Stalin medical camps. Is he interested in people's health only now? Amma mini clinics provided daily medical care within 2–3 km for every locality. Why politicise welfare schemes?" he asked, promising to revive both schemes if AIADMK returns to power. EPS further hit out at the DMK for failing to deliver on several 2021 poll promises made to Tenkasi. "Why do you need a CM who cannot keep his word? DMK is now openly admitting it depends on allies to win in 2026. We, the AIADMK and BJP, depend only on people — because for us, people are the true rulers," he said. Earlier in the day, EPS met representatives from people with disabilities, farmers, and merchants in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi. Representatives of the people with disabilities demanded higher monthly assistance, better access to education, and job opportunities.
