Massive blaze guts used furniture shop near North railway overbridge in Kochi
According to Fire and Rescue Services officials, the blaze was first noticed by nearby residents. The shop was located close to commercial and residential buildings, including an apartment and a house. Also, there is a petrol pump operating near the shop.
'It was a major fire, with all the furniture engulfed in flames. We immediately evacuated nearby residents to a safer location and began the firefighting operations. Also, measures were taken to prevent the fire from spreading to the petrol pump and shops nearby,' said a Fire and Rescue Service officer.
Around seven fire tenders from Gandhi Nagar, Club Road, Mattancherry, Thrikkakara, Eloor, and Tripunithura were deployed to bring the fire under control. It took over two hours to douse the flames. However, smoke continued emanating from the place. The entire operation continued till 8am.
Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire. However, the exact reason would be verified by various agencies, including the Electrical Inspectorate, after conducting a probe.
The initial estimate of damage is around Rs 20 lakh.

The woman pleaded with the police officers, saying she had not done anything and was even willing to pay for the items she allegedly stole, but the police officers refused to budge. According to the description of the video, police were called to Target on May 1 after the woman 'spent hours inside the store stealing items, ultimately attempting to walk out with thousands of dollars in unpaid merchandise." The woman apologised to the police officers and offered to pay for the items. 'I am really sorry to bother you if it is. I am not from this country. I am not going to stay here." The woman police officer interrogating the woman replied, 'Are you allowed to steal things in India? I did not think so." The alleged shoplifter then argued that she could not run with so many items and repeatedly offered to pay for them. A Target employee told the officers that the woman spent seven hours inside the store before trying to walk out the door with a cart filled with items, but she was apprehended soon afterwards. After reviewing the store bill totalling over $1,300 (Rs 1.08 lakh), the woman was seen being taken to the police station for processing, indicating that she has been charged with a felony. A woman police officer said she deliberately passed all the payout kiosks and took the cart full of items out of the store. The woman's actions were met with criticism online. 'Being an immigrant, I can't fathom the audacity of being a guest in this country and breaking its laws," a user commented below the YouTube video. 'How is it even logistically possible for someone to spend 7 consecutive hours in one store? Do you just walk around in circles? I'm ready to be out by the 30 minute mark," another person wrote. Three litigants fined in land ceiling case against govt
Patna: The Patna high court imposed a cost of Rs 25,000 on three people who engaged in a legal battle of a land ceiling case against the state govt for 50 years without any evidence of ownership of their claimed lands. A single bench of Justice Rajiv Roy, while dismissing the writ petition of one Ashok Kumar Tiwary and his two siblings, ordered the litigants to deposit the cost amount in the office of Bihar Legal Services Authority (BALSA) within four weeks. The judgment was delivered on July 10, but it came in the public domain after being uploaded on HC website on Tuesday. The matter relates to the initiation of three land ceiling cases in 1975-76 over 2,100 acres of agricultural land of a landlord named Shatrumardan Shahi of West Champaran district. The three petitioners were purported purchasers of six bighas of land from the son of the landlord. Despite repeated demands made by every court and forum in the last 50 years, they could not furnish a single copy of their sale deed, which was allegedly executed on June 23, 1970. Even the mutation of land was done 25 years after the alleged sale of land. Justice Roy found that these litigants initiated an endless legal battle only to hoodwink the revenue authorities. The sole motive of such litigants was to delay and defeat the purpose of land reform laws of Bihar, whereby surplus lands of landlords (exceeding the area of the ceiling limit) have been acquired by the govt and distributed among landless or marginal farmers, he remarked.

Man out of jail kills boy, 10, after failed sexual assault bid; held after encounter
Agra: A 30-year-old man, released from jail 13 days ago after serving a five-year term in a narcotics case, was arrested again on Tuesday following a brief encounter with police for allegedly killing a 10-year-old boy, a rag picker, after a failed attempt to sexually assault him, police said. Officers said Deepak Yadav lured the child to an under-construction building on the night of July 10. SHO Anjeesh Kumar Singh said, "The boy raised an alarm when Yadav tried to assault him, prompting the man to strangle him with his shirt and flee. The child's body, found the next morning without clothes, had a shirt wrapped around the neck, indicating strangulation." An FIR was registered at Tundla thana under BNS section 103 (1) (murder). A separate case was filed under BNS section 109 (attempt to murder) and the Arms Act after the accused fired on the police team during the encounter. Firozabad (city) SP Ravi Shankar Prasad said a country-made pistol, two used cartridges and three live cartridges were recovered from the accused. Following the murder, police scanned footage from more than 50 CCTV cameras. Yadav was identified and a reward of Rs 25,000 was announced for information leading to his arrest. A tip-off on Tuesday led police to set up a checkpoint on the outskirts of Agra. Yadav was spotted and signalled to stop. When he tried to flee, police surrounded him. He opened fire, and in retaliatory action, was shot in both legs. He was taken to the district hospital.
