STR50: A period epic with a twist—is Simbu going feminine?
In a conversation with director-actor KS Ravikumar at Behindwoods TV, the Maanaadu star said, 'I am playing a feminine character in the film, similar to what Kamal sir and Ajith sir have done before. I had already discussed it with Kamal sir earlier. As actors, we always hope to do something different constantly.'
For those unaware, Silambarasan TR's period epic with director Desingh Periasamy was originally announced as STR48. The film was to be produced by Kamal Haasan under his banner Raaj Kamal Film International (RKFI) but faced significant delays.
In the same conversation, Kamal Haasan revealed he had to step away from the project due to his commitment to Thug Life and the need to free up Simbu's schedule for a Mani Ratnam directorial. Now, STR will take on the role of producer for the film, with Yuvan Shankar Raja composing the music.
Talking about Thug Life, the upcoming gangster action period film stars Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan as father and son. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the story follows Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a gangster who, with his brother, rescues and raises a young boy named Amaran.
Later, the aging gangster is presumed dead but returns amid suspicions that Amaran wanted him out of the mafia. Fueled by rage, Rangaraaya Sakthivel aims to settle the score, sparking a deadly game between the two.
Starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan, the film also features an ensemble cast including Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, and more in key roles. This project marks the reunion of Haasan and Mani Ratnam since their first collaboration, Nayakan (1987), with both co-writing the screenplay.
Looking ahead, Silambarasan is set to star in his next film, tentatively titled STR49, with Dragon fame Kayadu Lohar as the female lead.

The Tamil film had made ₹97.25 crore worldwide in its lifetime. HHVM has also beaten Chandoo Mondeti's Naga Chaitanya-starrer Thandel, which made ₹88.25 crore worldwide. HHVM has also beaten the lifetime collections of Pawan's disastrous 2018 film Agnyaathavaasi, which made ₹94.6 crore worldwide. The film to beat now is the actor's highest-grosser so far, the 2022 film Bheemla Nayak, which earned ₹158.5 crore worldwide. His last film, Bro, in 2023, earned ₹114 crore worldwide. Lokesh Kanagaraj reveals shelved plan to unite Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan on screen
Filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj is currently promoting his upcoming film Coolie with Rajinikanth. In a recent interview, he revealed that the cinematic universe he is building initially began as an ambitious project aimed at bringing legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together in one film. Speaking to Gobinath in a recent interview, the Vikram director shared that the plan was for Rajinikanth to star and Kamal Haasan to produce the film. However, the pandemic disrupted the project before it could take off. Reflecting on the idea, Lokesh said he does not intend to push for it anymore. 'While I may be in a position where I can initiate such a project, I don't want to. I already tried once, and it didn't materialise. This is something that should happen naturally if the two legends decide to talk to each other for just 30 minutes,' he said. He added that the two actors, who have shared a deep friendship for decades, remain in regular contact and are present for each other during significant moments. 'I am nobody to initiate this. But if they decide to collaborate and call me, I will drop everything and go. The decision must come from them,' he said. Lokesh also acknowledged the challenges such a project would pose. 'If Rajini sir and Kamal sir agree to work together, the cast and crew would come with salaries of great magnitude. Figuring out a story that fits both their iconic images would be a Himalayan task. I am ready for it, but it has to come from them,' he concluded. Lokesh Kanagaraj, who has established himself to be a die-hard fan of Kamal Haasan, directed Vikram with the actor in 2022. While Vikram is a part of the filmmaker's LCU, or Lokesh Cinematic Universe, Coolie will not be, eliminating any chance of future onscreen collaboration between Kamal Haasan's Vikram and Rajinikanth's Deva.
