But Belichick is the one rewriting history. Belichick says he is the one who 'took a big risk' by taking the Patriots' job? Belichick wasn't exactly in high demand after going 36-44 with the Browns, and he lost out on the Raiders job to Jon Gruden. Kraft, though, did take a risk in trading a first-round pick for a sub-.500 coach with a dull demeanor at the podium.
Another questionable claim: Belichick in 2000 took over a Patriots franchise that had 'dismantled' their 1996 Super Bowl team and 'became one of the worst in the AFC'? They went 10-6, 9-7, and 8-8 in three years under Pete Carroll, and only bottomed out at 5-11 after Belichick took over. Belichick in 2000 also inherited several players from the 1996 team, including Drew Bledsoe, Troy Brown, Terry Glenn, Tedy Bruschi, Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Willie McGinest, Ted Johnson, and Adam Vinatieri.

And while Van Natta, not Belichick, wrote that the Patriots ranked 31st out of 32 teams in spending since 1994, that stat has Belichick's fingerprints all over it. It also warrants a fact check since the Panthers and Jaguars didn't exist until 1995, the Ravens until 1996, the Browns didn't play from 1996-98, and the Texans didn't exist until 2002. Unfortunately, accurate cash spending data from the last 30 years is difficult to find.
Belichick spent 25 years ignoring the noise, staying above the fray, and cultivating an image as a cunning, unflappable genius. A rapid transformation into the sensitive, media-hungry Belichick in the last six months is a surprising turn that is damaging his legacy.

Throughout this Chiefs' run, uh, I think 9 straight division titles, how often has there been a good second team in the AFC West? And the answer is pretty rarely. I think there's two now. We can debate whether you like the Broncos or Chargers more to compete with the Chiefs in this division. Maybe the answer is both. I like the Chargers. Others prefer the Broncos, but I think you're going to get, again, these two teams did make the playoffs last year. I think you're gonna get both of those teams kind of nipping at the Chiefs' heels this year. I think we're gonna look up in December and say, wow, the Chiefs could be a wild card team this year because the Broncos and Chargers are right there with them. I, I feel like the Chargers are a 10-win team and the Broncos are a 10-win team, and the Chiefs are a 13-win team. I can get the Chiefs down to like 12 and 5, and maybe that will feel like tremendous regression, but I don't know, man. Like I just, I have a hard time betting against them. I, I just think that, again, the bust for the Chiefs is you, you, you are a wild card team and maybe, you know, you go on the road, Buffalo week one or Ravens week wild card weekend, and you lose. That's a bust for them. Uh, I think if some of these breaks don't go their way, all of a sudden we're looking and saying, oh wow, they they have to go on the road week one. This is the first time ever for the Chiefs as a wildcard in the playoffs here. I think that's on the table. Close

Asked about his prediction for the season as training camp begins, two-time Pro Bowler Tyler Smith didn't shy away. Telling reporters, "Super Bowl champions … That's always the expectations." Outside of Micah Parsons' contract situation, Dallas is also facing a looming contract extension for Smith who could become the league's highest-paid guard whenever that deal takes place. As ESPN's Todd Archer notes: "The Kansas City Chiefs signed Trey Smith to a four-year deal worth $94 million. The Eagles' Landon Dickerson was the highest-paid guard at $21 million per; now it's $23.5 million for Trey Smith. Would the Cowboys be wise to match that? Go a little higher in the average? Probably so." "Smith recently made an agent change, moving to Joe Panos. In 2014, Panos was Tyron Smith's agent when he signed his eight-year extension. The Cowboys had exercised Tyron Smith's fifth-year option in 2015, but signed him in training camp. So there's a good working history between the club and agent." Smith has been awesome in his three seasons with the club after being drafted 24th overall out of Tulsa. But with so much of the franchise's expenses tied up in two (and soon, three) players, it's going to be interesting to see how it shakes out.
