Iraq: Unprecedented increase in aircraft transiting Iraqi airspace

Iraqi News10-05-2025
The Iraqi Ministry of Transport – General Company for Air Navigation Services announced on Saturday a record and unprecedented increase in the number of aircraft crossing Iraqi airspace.
"In a qualitative development that embodies Iraq's return to its natural position on the global air transport map, the General Company for Air Navigation Services recorded an unprecedented increase in the number of aircraft crossing Iraqi airspace, reflecting the country's transformation into a breathing lung for international air traffic," according to a statement from the Ministry - received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
The statement added, "This progress is the result of sound strategic plans developed by the Iraqi government, headed by Muhammed S. al-Sudani, and under the direct supervision of the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, who closely followed efforts to develop air navigation and enhance its operational efficiency."
The General Company for Air Navigation "has been able to develop its technical and technological capabilities in line with Iraq's geopolitical importance, as a meeting point between continents, a bridge linking East and West, and an indispensable corridor for global civil aviation traffic," highlighted the statement.
"The General Company for Air Navigation Services has achieved a qualitative leap in the number of overflight flights, as the daily average increased from 300 to 350, then to 450, then to 550 and 600, currently reaching more than 700 flights per day, a clear indication of the growing international confidence in Iraqi airspace."
The statement also noted that "expectations indicate that this growth will continue as a result of ongoing development steps."
"The mobilization of the company's human and technical crews enabled the management of this unprecedented volume of air traffic with high efficiency and extreme precision, as Iraqi air traffic controllers demonstrated professional skills that rival the best international systems, approving the national readiness to deal with the changing challenges in the international aviation space," said the Director General of Air Navigation, Abbas Al-Baydani.
He pointed out that "Many European airlines, most notably Air France, have chosen Iraqi airspace as a primary corridor for their flights, taking advantage of Iraq's central location and reliability. Its air traffic control services have proven highly efficient."
"The General Air Navigation Company continues to implement its plans to develop navigation services, in coordination with the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO, and to work on modernizing takeoff and landing systems at most Iraqi airports, in addition to enhancing the use of civilian airspace. It is a scientific indicator of the growing operational attractiveness of Iraqi airspace to major international airlines," he added.
He stated that "in a calculated scientific move, the company expanded civilian airspace at the expense of military airspace, providing wider and safer routes for aircraft and accommodating the increased flow of overflights. Experts described this as a "qualitative shift in airspace management according to the highest standards of joint use."

EQIQ invests $3M in Iraq's new digital bank venture

Baghdad ( – Venture capital firm EQIQ has committed $3 million to support the launch of a new AI-powered digital bank in Iraq, led by Iraqi-American finance executive Hussain Qaragholi. The investment is part of a $15 million funding round aimed at developing the country's first fully digital banking platform. The upcoming bank will offer AI-driven, mobile-first financial services designed to expand access and modernize Iraq's underdeveloped banking sector. Iraq, despite being the fourth-largest economy in the MENA region, remains significantly underserved in digital finance. Qaragholi, a seasoned banker with senior roles at Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, and Deutsche Bank, brings extensive experience in sovereign finance, fintech, and emerging markets. He has led major financial restructurings for Iraq and advised global institutions on capital strategies across the region. EQIQ views the digital bank as a strategic pillar in its plan to build Iraq's digital economy, alongside investments in fintech, logistics, and e-commerce. Based in Abu Dhabi, EQIQ has already deployed more than half of its first $15 million fund into five fast-growing tech startups since 2023.

Iraq's Development Road project to boost Turkey's economy

Baghdad ( – The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said Iraq's massive project to construct a 1,200-kilometer railway and a parallel freeway from southern Iraq to Turkey's northern border could pump $50 billion into the Turkish economy. During a worldwide transportation conference held in the Turkish city of Istanbul over the weekend, Erdogan said that Iraq's Development Road may provide over 63,000 job opportunities in Turkey. The Turkish president indicated that Iraq's $17 billion project represents the greatest rail system in the Middle East and an important milestone for regional economic integration. Erdogan defined the project as a massive infrastructure project aiming at connecting Iraq to Europe through Turkey, and he stated that it will spur substantial rail growth in Turkey. The Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, revealed in November that Turkey will invest $19.9 billion to build railways and roads connected to Iraq's Development Road project. In remarks made to the Anadolu Agency, Oraloglu said that the project's current and planned railway investments will contribute to strengthening regional collaboration. As part of the Development Road project, a 2,094-kilometer railway line will be built in Turkey, according to Oraloglu. The Turkish minister mentioned that Turkey will invest $17.9 billion to construct 1,655 kilometers of railway lines that will connect to 439 kilometers of existing railway lines. Oraloglu explained that out of the 1,924 kilometers of land roads included in the project inside Turkey, the Turkish government will invest $2 billion in the construction of 331 kilometers of highways. Iraq, Turkey, the UAE, and Qatar signed last April a quadripartite agreement on Iraq's Development Road project, aiming to enhance cooperation on Iraq's strategic project. The four countries will develop the necessary frameworks to carry out the project. The Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, revealed recently that Turkey formed a council involving Bulgaria, Hungary, and Serbia to arrange the connection of Europe with Iraq's Development Road. In addition to the railway and road network, the project will also feature pipelines for the transportation of energy. As a regional route for the transportation of goods and energy, the project will also serve as a center for global trade.

Iraqi Speaker meets Turkish FM; Confirms Water Deal

By John Lee. The Iraqi Speaker of Parliament Dr Mahmoud al-Mashhadani met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara on Wednesday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and joint initiatives. Dr al-Mashhadani called for deeper cooperation between the two nations, proposing the activation of parliamentary friendship committees and requesting Turkey to ease residency procedures for Iraqis, including renewal processes and protection from arbitrary deportation. The two sides also reviewed progress on the proposed "Development Road" project, which is expected to boost economic ties, trade connectivity, and regional integration by facilitating a low-cost trade corridor from Asia to Europe. Dr al-Mashhadani also thanked Turkey for increasing water releases into the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and urged continued cooperation on water issues. Later the same day, Dr al-Mashhadani received a phone call from Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, who confirmed additional water flows-reaching 420 cubic metres per second-as agreed with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in an earlier meeting. Dr al-Mashhadani expressed gratitude to both Turkish leaders, describing Turkey as a vital neighbour and affirming Iraq's readiness to deepen cooperation on mutual interests.
