Newcastle's transfer supremo search intensifies with ex-Arsenal chief a contender

Telegraph01-07-2025
Newcastle United have made Jason Ayto a serious candidate for their sporting director role following his departure from Arsenal at the end of the season.
Ayto is seen as a prime contender at St James' Park to replace Paul Mitchell, who left his post after less than a year at the club. Newcastle have been assessing options with Ayto's reputation enhanced after a decade at the Emirates Stadium where he finished as interim sporting director.
The 40-year-old worked under ex-Arsenal sporting director Edu before being promoted last season with his departure announced by the club after Andrea Berta's appointment. It is believed that Ayto was in the running for the position himself, with his notable successes including landing Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad despite intense competition.
His role at Newcastle would be on recruitment of players for Eddie Howe, contracts for existing players and working closely with the manager on long-term strategy for the team.
Newcastle have been looking to fill Mitchell's position since his shock departure in May, which came eight months after his criticism of the transfer policy under the previous regime.
Howe had played an important role in that previous decision-making process that brought Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak, Nick Pope, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon to club – but the policy was branded by Mitchell as not 'fit for purpose'.
Mitchell's close ally Darren Eales, Newcastle's CEO, is stepping down because of health reasons, which was one of the reasons for his departure.
Newcastle have endured a frustrating transfer window so far and have yet to sign a player, with Bryan Mbeumo preferring a move to Manchester United over a switch to St James' Park. The club launched a triple swoop for Joao Pedro, James Trafford and Anthony Elanga but Pedro has opted to join Chelsea. Andy Howe has been working alongside Steve Nickson in their recruitment team.
Ayto has experience working with Mikel Arteta and helped shape them into Premier League title contenders, with the relationship with Howe seen as a key factor in the appointment of a new sporting director. He is thought to have other admirers in the Premier League, as well as being in the final reckoning for the Newcastle job.

Lakeland-owner Hilco eyes swoop for stricken jeweller Claire's

The prolific high street investor which owns Lakeland and has backed chains including HMV and Superdry is sizing up a takeover of the UK operations of Claire's, the struggling jewellery chain. Sky News understands that Hilco Capital, which was also one of the recent bidders for Poundland, is among the parties expected to submit offers for Claire's in the coming weeks, according to banking sources. Other parties expected to examine offers for Claire's British chain, which trades from about 280 stores, would include Alteri Investors and Modella Capital, which recently bought WH Smith's high street chain. The Telegraph reported earlier this month that Claire's had hired Interpath Advisory to find a buyer for the UK business as it explores options - including bankruptcy - for its US-based operations. Prospective buyers of the business have been told that a sale of the British chain could lead to significant numbers of store closures. One retail industry boss speculated that as many as a third of the UK shops could be axed in a deal to salvage the rest of the chain, potentially putting hundreds of jobs at risk. Claire's has been a fixture in British shopping centres and on high streets for decades. Houlihan Lokey, the investment bank, is advising on the sale of the US arm. Claire's, which is reported to trade from 2,000 stores globally, is owned by former creditors Elliott Management and Monarch Alternative Capital following a previous financial restructuring.

Scottie Scheffler in command despite double-bogey

A rare misjudgement from runaway Open leader Scottie Scheffler offered a glimmer of hope to the chasing pack but his advantage was still five shots as he entered the back nine at Royal Portrush. Birdies at the first, after a brilliant approach to a foot, the fourth and fifth had opened up a seven-shot gap and his procession to a first Claret Jug looked even more of a formality for the world number one. However, he got too greedy with a fairway bunker shot at the eighth and left the ball in the sand, resulting in a double-bogey six and his first dropped shot in 33 holes. But, typically, he responded with a birdie to get back to 16 under, which was still just about in range of last week's Scottish Open winner Chris Gotterup who had turned in a three-under 33. China's Haotong Li, who has been in the top three all week, was also at 11 under having battled his way to a front nine of 35. Rory McIlroy's hoped-for charged failed to materialise over the front nine as he did not get the fast start he had on Saturday, when he carded three birdies in four holes. He turned in 34, at 10 under, but having failed to gain any momentum he needed more unlikely Scheffler mistakes to stand a chance of a dream win in his home Open. However, the errors were coming from him and a mis-hit chip at the 10th cost him a double bogey and with that his chances were over. Matt Fitzpatrick also struggled over the front nine and was only able to advance his score by a shot, and was one ahead of his Ryder Cup team-mate at 10 under alongside American Harris English. Two-time major winner Bryson DeChambeau carded seven birdies in a 64 which propelled him to nine under and into a tie for sixth with Canadian Corey Conners, also in the clubhouse, and former US Open champion Wyndham Clark, who still had five holes to play.

But Brazilian centre back Gabriel, 27 – who signed a new four-year deal last month – is confident they can finally shake off the tag of top-flight bridesmaids. He said: 'I only have one thing to say, and Mikel says it: We are ready to reach new heights this season. 'I've been at the club for five years now and I've seen how much the club has grown. Arteta was left to rue key injuries that hampered Arsenal's title charge last campaign with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus suffering long-term lay-offs at crucial times. Gabriel was also ruled out for the remainder of the season in April, requiring hamstring surgery – with attackers Saka and Havertz undergoing the same procedure. He is back and raring to go with the club now out in Singapore for their pre-season tour, facing AC Milan on Wednesday and Newcastle on the weekend, before travelling to Hong Kong to take on fierce rivals Tottenham.
