Norwegian Berlinale Winner Dag Johan Haugerud Named Jury Head for Venice's Giornate Degli Autori

Yahoo20-05-2025
Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud, who won the Berlin Film Festival's Golden Bear earlier this year for Dreams, has been named the jury president for Giornate Degli Autori, the independent section within the Venice Film Festival promoted by the Italian filmmaker associations ANAC and 100autori. The decision marks a 'homecoming' of sorts for the filmmaker after Barn (Beware of Children), which had its world premiere in competition at the Giornate degli Autori in 2019, was Haugerud's international debut.'I'm thrilled and excited to be entrusted with the honorable assignment of presiding over this year's jury of Giornate degli Autori', said Haugerud. 'Giornate is close to my heart, with its passionate and selective programming, and the fact that it's cherry-picking only 10 films with special care for innovation, originality and independence.'
He added: 'Art, literature and cinema are more important than ever, they represent an opportunity for both intellectual and political reflection and – if you're lucky – an expansion of the senses. In that way, cinema has the ability to make changes, both on an individual level and for society as a whole.'Said artistic director Gaia Furrer: 'Welcoming him back to Giornate six years after the memorable premiere of Beware of Children, we marvel at the evolution of a filmmaker whose Sex, Dreams, Love trilogy received recognition by winning a Golden Bear Award at the Berlinale. His cinema is timeless and yet profoundly of our time, rooted in a deep philosophical interest for everything that makes us human – our aspirations, vulnerability and shortcomings'

Piper Perabo celebrates 25 years of 'Coyote Ugly' with throwback photo

Piper Perabo is celebrating the 25th anniversary of " Coyote Ugly." The actress took to Instagram and shared a series of stills from the film, including a group shot with her, Bridget Moynahan, Tyra Banks, Isabella Miko and Maria Bello. "25 years ago today #CoyoteUgly opened in theaters," she wrote. "Sending love to everyone who ever danced on a bar, followed their dreams, or just likes a wild song." She also shared photos with Melanie Lynskey and Leanne Rimes, who sings the film's anthem, "Can't Fight The Moonlight," which was penned by Dianne Warren. Perabo portrayed Violet Sanford in the hit 2000 film, an aspiring songwriter who moves to New York and works at the Coyote Ugly bar. The film also starred Adam Garcia and John Goodman. At San Diego Comic-Con last month, Perabo told The Hollywood Reporter that "there has been some discussion" about a "Coyote Ugly" sequel. "Some things are being discussed," she said. "I can't really say, but people that were doing it are talking about some stuff."

Margaret Qualley Took the Iconic Cosmo Quiz Between Making Movies

Hearst Owned You know when someone is so booked and busy it feels kind of spiritual? That's Margaret Qualley right now. Case in point: The very morning she sat down to chat with Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Willa Bennett for her 60th anniversary cover interview, her latest film Honey Don't!—the second entry in Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke's Drive-Away Dolls lesbian road trip trilogy—was announced to premiere at Cannes. Not bad for a random Wednesday. And that's not all she has going on right now. She is also starring in Richard Linklater's Blue Moon and just wrapped Huntington, a darkly funny thriller with Glen Powell—and yes, you did spot her in Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix last weekend. Somehow, she still managed to show up to the set of her cover shoot on time and with the vibe of a girl who borrowed her best friend's sweater on the way out the door—not the air you'd expect of someone redefining screen stardom before our very eyes. She understandably had no time to fill out her version of our iconic Cosmo Quiz between photo setups, but she promised she'd get it done—and she's a woman of her word! So she FedEx'd us her completed copy from yes, she was working on yet another movie. (We knew she'd come through!) Over more than a decade in the game, Margaret's made a name for herself inhabiting characters who sit right at the intersection of womanhood, contradiction, and full-blown emotional hurricane. And we wouldn't have it any other way. The answers to her quiz aren't indicative of any characters though. They're quintessentially Margaret. Married. Jack Antonoff. Adam Sandler. Asheville, NC. My dad. My wedding day. Listen to your heart and share how you feel. Anything that involves playing that game is Pictionary. Today. Like 10 minutes ago. Smokey and Jack.
