Circus of obsessed Karen Read supporters gather outside court on closing arguments day: ‘It's so twisted. It's so corrupt'
Hundreds of people formed a sea of pink — the color Read's defenders have taken up to show their allegiance — around the Norfolk County Supreme Courthouse in Dedham, where some fans held a massive sign reading 'FRAMED.'

'It's so twisted. It's so corrupt,' said the mother, who had her week-old old baby strapped to her chest in a Baby Bjorn near the throng of fans.
The woman, who didn't give her name, said she became riveted by the case — in which Read, 45, is accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend in 2022 — after watching an HBO documentary series about the alleged murder.
The injustice cited by crowd members centers on Read's claim that cops tried to cover up that O'Keefe was actually killed by another person.

She claims she dropped him off at a house party the night of his death and he was later killed by someone else — possibly a police officer who was at the bash. She alleges police have tried to frame her for O'Keefe's death.

'It's not like Karen's a super, like, reliable person, right off the bat [in the series]. And then I saw the second episode, third episode, fourth episode. It's, like, there's actually no way she hit him. You start changing your mind,' she said.
Others watched the defense's closing arguments on their phones and cheered like it was a sports game.

One die-hard supporter flew in from Texas, and had been standing outside the courthouse since 5 a.m. in anticipation of a possible acquittal.
'I've been following the case, you know, from the beginning, I just can't get over how corrupt it all is. I can't,' said Amanda Rooney, Agawam, 47, of Agawam, Mass.
'I've listened to both sides. I was open to both sides…. But for every detail that somebody can give me about how she's guilty, I can tell them 10 ways she's not.'

Meanwhile, one supporter made a prop hat with the ingredients of a ham sandwich — an inside joke about a witness filmed eating the lunch food near defense attorney— as another held as sign proclaiming, 'Reasonable doubt established.'
Read is accused of hitting her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, with her SUV and leaving him to die in the snow after they got into a fight during a night of heavy drinking in January 2022.

Her first trial was declared mistrial last year after a deadlocked jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on all charges.
During closing arguments Friday, defense attorney Alan Jackson told jurors the case was corrupted by its lead investigator.
'You folks are the last line of defense— the last line of defense between an innocent woman and a system that has tried to break her, that falsely accused her and that tried mightily to bury the truth,' Jackson said.

'This case has been corrupted by biases, conflicts and personal loyalties. Most fatally, it was corrupted by a lead investigator whose misconduct infected every part of this case from the top to the bottom,' he said.'[He] didn't want the truth.'

'On full display you saw the lengths to which some police officers will go to protect their own at the expense of the rest of us,' he said.
Jackson also reminded the jury of the lead investigator's profane text messages to his pals about Read.

'There will be some serious charges brought on the girl,' the investigator wrote, referring to Read. 'She is a wack job c–t. . . Yeah she's a babe.'
'Zero chance she skates…She's f–ked,' he wrote.

Special Prosecutor Hank Brennan, meanwhile, said Read left her boyfriend to die in the snow to protect herself.

'She made a decision in her Lexus…as John O'Keefe laid helpless like a child in the front yard. She didn't call 911, she didn't run to his aid, she didn't knock on the front door,' Brennan said in closing arguments.
'She drove away. She was drunk, she hit him and she left him to die,' he said.
Jurors are expected to begin deliberating on the case later Friday.

Palestinian lives lost in the pursuit of food aid in Gaza, in photos
BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinians mourned those who died or were injured while trying to reach trucks carrying humanitarian aid in the northern Gaza Strip. International pressure for Israel to let in more aid has increased the number of aid trucks entering Gaza, but almost none of it reaches U.N. warehouses for distribution . Instead, nearly all the trucks are stripped of their cargo by crowds that overwhelm them. The crowds are a mix of Palestinians desperate for food and gangs armed with knives, axes or guns who loot the goods to then hoard or sell. ___ This is a photo gallery curated by AP photo editors. Manhunt launched after 4 killed in a shooting at a Montana bar
ANACONDA, Mont. (AP) — Four people were killed in a shooting at a Montana bar Friday, authorities said as they launched a manhunt for the suspect. The suspect was last seen in the Stump Town area, which is just west of Anaconda, according to a Facebook post by the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center. He was believed to still be armed, the Montana Highway Patrol said in a statement. The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. on Friday at The Owl Bar, according to the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is leading the investigation. The agency confirmed four people were pronounced dead at the scene and that it was an active investigation. Authorities have yet to release details about what led to the shooting. More than a dozen officers from local and state police converged on Stump Town where they appeared to be searching for the suspect in the woods. His home in Anaconda had already been cleared by a SWAT team, according to the Granite County Sheriff's office. Anaconda is about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Missoula. The owner of the Firefly Café in Anaconda said she locked up her business at about 11 a.m. Friday after getting alerted to the shooting by a friend. Two hours later, she was still waiting for an all clear before reopening. 'We are Montana, so guns are not new to us. For our town to be locked down, everybody's pretty rattled,' café owner Barbie Nelson said. 'It's a small town, so we all probably know someone who was there' at the shooting. she added.

Moreno threatens to cut federal funds to Cincinnati over bloody brawl
Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) on Friday threatened to pull federal funding from the Cincinnati after the fallout following a viral video of a 3 a.m. brawl in the streets of the city. The altercation, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in serious injuries for one woman after a physical fight between two men that spiraled into a larger conflict as others jumped in. Five people have been charged in connection to the brawl but only two have been arrested as of Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Moreno is blaming local leaders for not responding to the incident swiftly, although police said only one person called 911 to report the violence. 'I'm going to go down there next week. I'm going to deliver them a letter. They're going to have 30 days to put together a plan to protect the civil rights of all their citizens, regardless of their race,' Moreno said during an appearance on 'The Benny Show.' 'And if they don't do that, I'm going to ask all the federal agencies to suspend federal funding of Cincinnati, which would kill me. Because Cincinnati is a great city. I want to help Cincinnati,' he added. His criticism for local leadership follows harsh comments from Vice President Vance's half brother, Cory Bowman, who is running for mayor of the city. Bowman slammed city manager Sheryl Long, a woman of color, for the fight and said she should be removed from her post in response to the lack of action. 'We have to draw a line in the sand, Benny. We cannot let our cities be gone forever. We will not let these radicals take our cities,' Moreno said. However, some Cincinnati officials shared a vastly different response to the physical altercation. 'Cincinnati city council President Pro Tem Victoria Parks commented on a Facebook video of the fight, saying 'They begged for that beat down! I am grateful for the whole story,' according to WLWT. Mayor Aftab Pureval and others have condemned Park's comments. 'I disagree with Victoria Parks' comments. No one deserves to be a victim of violent crime,' Purveal said per the outlet. 'I am outraged by the vicious fight that occurred downtown,' he said in a separate statement, per AP. 'It is horrifying to watch, and this is unacceptable and disgusting behavior is intolerable in any part of our community.'
