Liam Delap scores first goal for Chelsea as Blues progress to last 16

The former Ipswich forward struck just moments after defender Tosin Adarabioyo had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time of their final Group D game in Philadelphia.
Tyrique George scored a third in time added on at the end of the game after Chelsea had a penalty awarded for handball overturned by VAR.
The result means the Londoners will now face Benfica – surprise winners of Group C ahead of Bayern Munich – in the next round in Charlotte on Saturday.
It was an occasion when Delap began paying back his £30million fee.

With Nicolas Jackson suspended, the 22-year-old – one of just three players to retain his place as manager Enzo Maresca stuck to his plan to rotate his side – had an opportunity to cement his place.
It was a chance he took on what was a hot and sticky night in Pennsylvania, with the temperature still 33C when the game kicked off at 9pm local time.
His goal – coming in a quickfire double, both created by Enzo Fernandez – put the game beyond doubt before the interval.
With FIFA president Gianni Infantino watching on, the Blues had already dominated the opening period.
Chelsea, with a superior goal difference to Esperance, knew a draw would be sufficient to secure the runners-up spot in the group behind Flamengo.
That put the onus on Esperance but, despite some attacking vibrancy, they lacked the quality up front.
Delap created the first chance of the night when he skipped around two challenges but his shot was comfortably saved by Bechir Ben Said.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has been linked with West Ham, got in a header from a Malo Gusto cross but it looked to be going wide before Yassine Meriah headed clear.
Josh Acheampong forced Ben Said to save from distance but the flag was raised before Delap could get to the rebound.
Another good move led to Fernandez blasting wide but Chelsea finally took control with their quickfire double in first-half stoppage time.
Adarabioyo opened the scoring with a well-placed header across goal after rising to meet a Fernandez free-kick.
Fernandez was again the provider as the Londoners doubled their lead moments later.
This time he chipped forward for Delap and the striker turned brilliantly to beat one defender and flick past another before rolling the ball past a statuesque Ben Said.
Nukunku appealed for a penalty after going down early in the second half but nothing was given before Noni Madueke sent a shot narrowly wide.
Chelsea were awarded a spot-kick when an Andrey Santos effort from distance struck the arm of Meriah.
It seemed a harsh decision but there was a long delay, with Christopher Nkunku stood over the ball waiting to take it, before the referee was called over the monitor.
Chelsea finally got the third goal their superiority deserved when substitute George's shot squirmed through Ben Said's grasp.

Erik ten Hag wants to sign Raheem Sterling after failed Man Utd transfer approach

Raheem Sterling has returned to Chelsea following his loan spell with Arsenal and the England international has emerged as a surprise target for Erik ten Hag's Bayer Leverkusen Erik ten Hag is keen to finally link up with Raheem Sterling after failing to sign him at Manchester United. Ten Hag's Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly one of several clubs monitoring Sterling's future after the England international was told that he could leave Chelsea. ‌ Sterling, whose last appearance for his country came at the 2022 World Cup, spent last season on loan at Arsenal. But the winger, 30, struggled for regular game-time, making just five starts in the Premier League. ‌ Having returned to Chelsea at the end of the 2024-25 season, Sterling is still not in Enzo Maresca's plans after being dramatically frozen out at the beginning of last term. That's when links of a shock move to United emerged. ‌ Despite playing for both Liverpool and Manchester City, it was claimed that the Red Devils were in talks with Chelsea, as Ten Hag was interested in Sterling. It was part of negotiations for Jadon Sancho to head the other way during the closing stages of the summer transfer window. Sancho did end up going to Stamford Bridge whereas Sterling ultimately joined Arsenal, who pulled off a final-day swoop. Eleven months later, however, Ten Hag appears to be back in for the ex-Liverpool and City star. BBC Sport report that Leverkusen, who appointed Ten Hag as their new manager in May, are keeping an eye on Sterling with a view to a potential transfer. It's added that a number of clubs on the continent are interested in the 30-year-old. Sterling still has two years left on his contract with Chelsea, who paid City £47.5m for his services in 2022. Leverkusen have cultivated English talent before, particularly wide players. Nottingham Forest forward Callum Hudson-Odoi had a season-long loan with the German giants while former Southampton ace Nathan Tella has played for Leverkusen since 2023. Ten Hag is looking to bolster his squad after losing star man Florian Wirtz to Liverpool as well as Jeremie Frimpong. ‌ Granit Xhaka is also pushing for a move to Sunderland while defender Jonathan Tah signed for Bayern Munich before Ten Hag had started his role. So far, Leverkusen's signings include PSV Eindhoven star Malik Tillman, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken and Hertha Berlin playmaker Ibrahim Maza. Their pre-season campaign got underway in humiliating fashion with a 5-1 defeat against Brazilian side Flamengo's UNDER-20 side. Coincidentally, Leverkusen will play Chelsea in a friendly at Stamford Bridge on Friday, August 8. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. 'My friend Joey Jones was great fighter on pitch and total gentleman off it'

Mirrorman remembers his late friend Joey Jones who died on Tuesday and his kindness back in 1983 Joey Jones was one of the nicest men I've ever met. We first met back in March 1983 when he bought me a few pints in a hotel bar in London. I knew he had been unwell in recent years but news of his death yesterday still came as a huge shock. I'd written to Joey when I was an 18-year-old journalism student asking if he would see me to discuss football hooliganism which blighted the game at at the time. ‌ He wrote back and agreed to see me and we spent four hours chatting about football in the bar of the Lily Hotel near Stamford Bridge when he was playing for Chelsea. ‌ ‌ I've still got the letter which in which he wrote: 'I'd be happy to meet you to talk about the problem of hooliganism. The best time for me would be a Thursday afternoon after training, if you can confirm which Thursday it would be let me know so that I can make arrangements. Cheers Joey Jones.' When we met he refused to let me buy a single drink. He attained legendary status at Liverpool and he was a cult hero at Chelsea. ‌ Anyone who was at the Chelsea FA Cup game against Huddersfield in January 1983 will remember him coming out after half-tine and going to every side of the stadium imploring the Chelsea fans to roar their side to victory We stayed in touch and loved talking about his time at Liverpool, Wrexham and Chelsea. His greatest friend was his old Chelsea team-mate Mickey Thomas. Another close friend Kelvin Barker said: 'Joey was my hero who became one of my closest friends. I will miss him terribly, but I thank him for everything he did for me, and everything he did for Chelsea Football Club. When I was writing my first book, Celery, I picked a Chelsea team of the 80s and set out to meet and interview each of those former players. "Joey was the first to respond and we met at Vicarage Road prior to a FA Youth Cup game when he was in charge of the Wrexham youngsters. In truth, we hit it off straight away and when I was leaving, he told me to go up to Wrexham and watch a game with him. I thought he was just being polite but he kept in touch and invited me again, and that was where the friendship began really, well over twenty years ago now.' Joey was a tough uncompromising player on pitch - even sent off on his debut for Chelsea - but an absolute gentleman off it.
