Indian markets at a crossroads: Banking loses steam, IT and metals eye a comeback

Mint20-05-2025
India's equity market is undergoing a subtle but critical sectoral shift as the latest Relative Rotation Graphs (RRG) from Share.Market reveal evolving momentum patterns among key industries. While the banking sector continues to lead, its waning strength suggests the tide may be turning in favor of sectors like IT and metals.
According to Share.Market's weekly Sector Rotation Report, which analyses sectoral movements relative to the Nifty 50 benchmark over a six-week period from April 4 to May 16, several sectors are showing signs of transition.
Banking, private banking, and financial services indices have remained in the leading quadrant, outperforming the broader market with strong relative strength and momentum. However, recent trends show a decline in both, signaling that this leadership may not last much longer. Analysts suggest that while fundamentals remain solid, valuations and macro headwinds could be prompting investors to rotate out of these heavyweights.
The IT sector, which had been underperforming, is now showing renewed strength. Rising momentum and improving relative performance indicate growing investor confidence, possibly driven by global tech demand and cost optimization initiatives.
Metal stocks, while still in the lagging quadrant, have shown a modest improvement in momentum. While early, this may signal the beginning of a bottoming-out phase, especially if global commodity cycles turn supportive.
The auto sector remains in the lagging zone but is witnessing a gradual pickup in momentum. Analysts interpret this as early signs of a cyclical rebound, though visibility remains low. In contrast, the pharma sector has slipped deeper into underperformance, moving from weakening to lagging with falling momentum and strength—indicating structural pressures may persist.
Once seen as safe havens, FMCG and healthcare sectors have also drifted into the lagging quadrant. Share.Market notes that these sectors have failed to sustain prior momentum, likely reflecting stretched valuations and tepid earnings growth.
As of mid-May, the sectoral rotation paints a picture of a market in transition. 'Investors should watch out for emerging leadership from beaten-down sectors showing signs of revival. The IT and metal sectors deserve close attention, especially if momentum sustains,' the report said.
The Relative Rotation Graph (RRG) framework used in the analysis is particularly helpful in identifying turning points, enabling investors to shift focus ahead of major sector rallies. Experts suggest that success in the current environment will depend on adaptability and timely sector rotation.

Tata Power shares fall 2% on $490-million arbitration ruling against Co

Tata Power shares witnessed a drop of over 2.4 per cent to hit an intraday low of ₹396.60 per share on Thursday. The drop in the Tata Group company's share price came after it was directed by an arbitration tribunal to pay over $490 million in damages to Kleros Capital Partners. At 11:00 am, Tata Power shares were trading at ₹400.7 per share, down by 1.4 per cent on the National Stock Exchange. In comparison, the Nifty50 was trading in green, up by 95 points or 0.37 per cent at 25,549. So far this year, the shares of Tata group's power arm have remained largely range-bound, witnessing a mere single digit rise of over 3 per cent. On an annual basis, Tata Power Shares have struggled to trade in green, experiencing a decline of 7.9 per cent on the NSE. Currently, Tata Power shares are down by more than 19 per cent from the 52-week high level of ₹494.85, touched last September. Why are Tata Power shares falling today? The decline in Tata Power shares came after the arbitration tribunal ordered the company, with a majority of 2:1, to pay damages worth $490 million with simple interest of 5.33 per cent, from November 30, 2020, till the amount is paid. Tata Power, however, mentioned that it is still in the process of reviewing the order. "The three member arbitral tribunal, with a majority of 2:1, has partially allowed the claim that Kleros had filed in these arbitration proceedings, and has awarded Kleros, damages in the sum of (a) $490,320,000 with simple interest of 5.33 per cent from November, 30 2020 till the same is paid and (b) cost of $8,289,020.46 with simple interest of 5.33 per cent from July 1, 2025 till the same is paid," the company's exchange filing read. The case is related to Tata Power's Russian mining partner, Kleros Capital Partners. The mining firm got into a dispute with the Tata group company over a non-disclosure agreement tied to a proposed project in Russia. Kleros reportedly claimed that Tata Power broke confidentiality and non-circumvention terms. About Tata Power Tata Power is the country's largest domestic integrated power firm and has presence across the entire power value chain of conventional, renewable energy and power services. For the quarter ending March, Tata Power's revenue figure stood at ₹17,238 crore, marking a rise of 7 per cent from ₹16,256 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal. Profit after tax (PAT) stood at ₹1,306 crore, marking a solid double-digit rise of 25 per cent from ₹1,046 recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal.

IndusInd Bank, Hero MotoCorp may exit Nifty to make way for IndiGo, Max Healthcare: Nuvama

(You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel Crisis-ridden IndusInd Bank and two-wheeler major Hero MotoCorp may be excluded from the Nifty50 in the upcoming reshuffle due in September, according to calculations by Nuvama Alternative and Quantitative firm identified IndiGo and Max Healthcare as the top two inclusion candidates. "IndiGo has already seen substantial positive price action, reflecting market expectations. On the other hand, Max Healthcare appears under-owned on this theme and could attract more buying interest. We estimate that Max Health's inclusion would imply passive buying of over $400 million (approximately 12 days of average daily volume)," the brokerage Hero MotoCorp and IndusInd Bank are likely to be excluded from the Nifty50, potentially facing passive outflows of $244 million and $255 million, respectively. The cut-off period for eligibility ends in July, with the official announcement expected in late August and adjustments implemented on September 29.'While much of the negative sentiment appears to be priced in, we believe any further downside will be more pronounced around the adjustment period. Until then, we don't expect significant pressure purely from expected passive flows,' Nuvama only scenario in which Max Healthcare may miss inclusion is if Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) outperforms Max Health by approximately 12% immediately and sustains that outperformance through the end of July. Nuvama added that this is a low-probability earlier media reports suggested that stock exchange BSE could be included in the Nifty50 in the September rejig, Nuvama has ruled out any possibility of that happening, at least in the September 2025 review.'We've gone through the methodology document in detail, and our understanding suggests that BSE fails to meet several key eligibility criteria. In fact, we believe there's almost no chance of BSE even making it to the Nifty Next 50 in the September 2025 review,' it an inclusion could become possible if the index construction methodology changes or if BSE shares rise sharply — by over 40% — and sustain that rally through the end of July.
