
Where authors gossip, geek out and let off steam: 15 of the best literary Substacks
Literary Substacks don't follow a single pattern. For some, it's a way of getting new work into the world, whether publishing a novel in serial form or hot-off-the-keyboard short stories; for others, it's a way of interacting directly with readers (while building a handy marketing list); for still others, it's a home for criticism, journalism, personal blowing off of steam, self-promotion, or a more direct version of the traditional writerly side hustle, teaching creative writing to aspiring authors.
Most of them offer tiers of subscription: a monthly fee (usually a fiver or so) gets you paywalled posts; there'll be a discounted yearly fee; and a 'founder member' platinum tier that, for a substantial hike in costs, offers some extra benefit such as signed copies, exclusive events or other interactions with the author. Most Substacks also let you sign up to public posts for free.
The selling points to its users are its immediacy and the freedom it gives writers to speak to the people interested in their work or their lives without corporate gatekeepers. And for those who can build up a solid list of paid subscribers – like the big-name journalists who ditched traditional media for Substack and made more money doing so – it has the potential to be a nice little earner.
Emma Gannon, described last year by the Bookseller as 'one of the most popular novelists on Substack', says that 'the thing I love about it is it's sort of unlike classic social media. It's based on interests, rather than the humblebragging of showing your life as a highlight reel. People are geeking out on Substack about the things they love: writing, knitting, gardening. It's got a different vibe to it, because people are showcasing what they're interested in rather than what they are doing.'
It is, she says, 'like old-school blogging, but people are having long interactions with each other in the comments, which feels really healthy'. She adds that the mechanism for recommending other Substacks means that 'it's got a real generosity of spirit built into it'. In an age when writers make less and less money, the patronage aspect – 'People want to support me financially because they like what I'm doing, and it feels like a kind of: 'I will pay you, not for a word count, not for a content transaction, just to kind of keep you going'' – has a human value.
Another prominent Substacker, the Israeli writer Etgar Keret, shares that view. He says that with most social media the algorithm is the boss (a viral post he made on Facebook earned him 200,000 comments and dozens of death threats), but with Substack you're engaging directly with people who are interested in your work: 'I don't want to outsource the decisions about this community to something that is inhuman and that has commercial interests.' When you interact with someone on Substack, he says, 'I wouldn't say it's human – but it's almost human.'

This Substack was and remains a very intimate, episodic first draft of his experiences, a characteristically unsparing and humorous account of day-to-day life ('Heidi comes down, empties my urine bag [...] before putting the kettle on') mixed with a generous selection of essays, interviews and other material new and old.

Sometimes it's an opinion column, sometimes whimsy (he kept a post about pleated trousers behind the paywall because, he notes wanly, 'readers who might otherwise be circumspect are happy to pay for fashion tips'). There's cultural commentary (including an excellently feeling post on the cultural appropriation of bagels) and in response to Trumpism and the war in Gaza, some characteristically acidic reflections on free speech and antisemitism. He's a grouchy man, with good reason to be grouchy, and few grouch more eloquently.

July is a multidisciplinary writer and artist, and if her Substack has a guiding principle it's July's magpie sensibility. So in addition to the newsletter the site hosts podcasts and vlogs, there's a commenting community which July hopes will be 'an actual good way for people to make friends, colleagues, lovers', and an unboxing post commemorates the arrival of a vintage lavender dress July ordered on the internet.
Author Jami AttenbergTitle Craft TalkCost $8 a month or $60 a year; $100 a year for 'dreamboat supporters' (extra benefit not specified)Typical post 'I Want You to Be Both Gentle and Tough With Yourself'What you get Attenberg's Substack is strongly tilted towards aspiring writers. The novelist and short story writer known for The Middlesteins and All This Could Be Yours has been running what she calls an 'accountability practice' for writers called 1,000 Words on her newsletter since 2018. For two weeks each summer the Substack features #1000wordsofsummer – 'a 52,000-strong community of writers of all levels who are all supporting each other to write 1,000 words a day for two weeks'. Which means a daily keep-it-up email from Attenberg, additional thoughts from a published writer guest-star most days, and a Slack and social media community for participants to share encouragement and brag about their word counts. The rest of the year sees Attenberg posting on aspects of literary craft – prompts, vignettes from the writing life, and even the odd interview – once a week, every week.

But it's also a writing community, where Palahniuk showcases the work of his best students, dishes out 'homework' (watch Animal House, 'the douchiest movie ever', carefully), offers giveaways and discusses craft in a direct and unpretentious way.

Accordingly, perhaps, her Substack promises 'a place of confusion and curiosity, a repository for open emails and things that are not quite essays'. Her special sauce in the Substack are her Oulipian micro-essays – exactly 144 words each, 'a dozen times a dozen, also known as 'a gross', a term I learned while doing an inventory of nails and screws in my family's hardware store'. A particularly charming aspect of the Substack is that the word limit means that even though the posts are 'only for paid subscribers', you get the whole micro-essay in the preview pane anyway.

Hundreds of Nigerian ‘authors' use visa scheme to enter Britain
Hundreds of Nigerian 'authors' have come to Britain using a visa scheme for literary talent, The Telegraph can reveal. Nigerians have made the most applications for entry to the UK via a little-known 'literature' visa for writers, which covers professed 'poets' and oral 'storytellers', than any other nationality. Applicants from Nigeria have also been the most successful in having claims to exceptional literary ability endorsed by the government quango Arts Council England, which has powers to review and endorse applications for 'Global Talent' visas. This visa route supports entry to Britain for exceptional individuals in music, theatre, and dance, with applicants expected to possess and prove artistic merit. There is also a category for great talents in 'literature', which covers a range of writers, including novelists, poets, spoken word performers, storytellers and creators of 'graphic novels and comics'. Successful applicants can bring their family to the UK as dependents and stay for up to five years at a time once endorsed by the Arts Council, and signed off by the Home Office. A rise in applications Nigerians have dominated this visa scheme over the past five years, putting in 125 applications, more than double the 61 received from the USA and far more than other Anglophone nations like Australia, Canada and New Zealand combined. Across that five-year period, 70 were rejected, and 54 were endorsed – more than any other country represented in official figures. Analysis of the talent visa numbers comes amid growing pressure on the Labour Government to tighten their stance on immigration, which in recent years has reached record levels both for legal and illegal arrivals. The past five years have also seen the making or securing of reputations for some prominent Nigerian writers, including Ben Okri, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀. The work of the late writer Chinua Achebe's famed 1958 novel Things Fall Apart has become common on schools reading lists. However, the use of the literature visa appears to be part of a broader trend. The number of Global Talent visa applications being submitted from Nigeria has risen by 2,225 per cent since 2019. There were just 12 applications in 2019, but this rose to 279 in 2024. Across that entire period, Nigerians made 729 applications across artistic Global Talent categories – dance, fashion, music, film and TV, theatre, combined arts, and visual arts – second only to the US, with 977. Despite the glut of applications, just 59 per cent of the entries from Nigeria were endorsed – the lowest of any country apart from Ghana. Since 2019, more than 5,000 applications have been made across all nationalities, with 3,600 endorsed by the Arts Council. The Home Office does not break down figures for how many of these endorsements then lead to visas being signed off by Whitehall officials. Other nationalities have also submitted large numbers of applications including Russia (725), China (492), Australia (233) and India (160). The revelations about the Global Talent route come after The Telegraph reported the Labour Government intended to protect skilled worker visa routes for diversity and inclusion experts, despite their promise to reduce immigration. The Home Office has safeguarded visa application routes for those with specific skills, creating a temporary list of 'shortage' occupations. This list safeguards the positions of 'poet' and 'blogger', roles that come under the visa route for the broad category of 'authors, writers and translators'. The median earning for a self-employed writer, according to a 2022 report by the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre, was just £7,000. While only the median, this is below the £12,570 personal allowance for income tax. The shortage occupation list will drop out of use, pending a review, in December 2026.

‘Don't feel like you have to stop at one': the shiny, thrifty brooch revival
The white gold and diamond brooch set like a moving snake was not the first time Zendaya wore the jewellery category most associated with grandmothers. But due to its placement, it might have been the most talked about. In attendance at the Met gala, the Dune actor pinned the Bulgari brooch to the back of her white Louis Vuitton suit. 'The Met Gala really was prime time for brooches,' Melbourne stylist Stuart Walford says. While fashion critics have heralded the brooch's return to menswear for several seasons, lately it has found its way to women's lapels too. Also at the Met Gala, Sarah Snook pinned a cluster of silver brooches from Rahaminov Diamonds and Saidian Vintage Jewels to her blazer, Aimee Lou Wood and Doja Cat both wore brooches in the shape of flowers covered in tiny diamonds (by Cartier and David Webb respectively), while the event's host, Anna Wintour, complimented her pale blue suit with an antique brooch by Lydia Courteille. At the SNL 50th reunion Tina Fey wore an art deco T-shaped brooch, Cynthia Erivo wore several to the 56th NAACP Image Awards and, more than once, the fashion writer Leandra Medine Cohen has featured a 1930s Jean Cocteau fish pin on her Substack, The Cereal Aisle. The brooch also remained the accessory of choice for men at the Oscars with Kieran Culkin, Adrien Brody and Colman Domingo prettifying their suits with ones shaped like tear drops, feathers and ribbons – in that order. Perhaps unsurprisingly given their prominence on the red carpet, it's hard to find a major fashion house that doesn't have a brooch in its recent collections, from Gucci to Loewe and Schiaparelli. 'It is a sign from the wearer to show their personality,' Blacker says. Olivia Cummings, the jewellery designer behind Cleopatra's Bling, says: 'Brooches require care in their placement and a sense of ceremony in their wearing. I think people are craving that now.' The personal statement brooch has deep roots, evolving from simple pins used to hold garments closed in the bronze age to intricate adornments that communicated class, religion and marital status in ancient Rome. In the 18th and 19th centuries, brooches became the original Instagram-holiday-post, featuring micro mosaics of the European tourist towns they were bought in. More recently, the brooches of Madeleine Albright and Queen Elizabeth II were rumoured to carry coded messages. 'Brooches are conversation starters, that's what makes them so special,' Walford says. The financial appeal is twofold: they are a great item to thrift and they help the wearer freshen up their existing wardrobe without buying an entirely new outfit, he says. When styling brooches, Walford recommends balancing the proportions with the size of your lapel. 'If it's narrow, keep things small and delicate. For a large and oversized 80s-style lapel, you could go big.' 'Don't feel like you have to stop at one – if we learned anything from this year's Met Gala, it's that a brooch can be layered and stacked.' Alternatively, take a leaf out of Zendaya's book and fasten one to the back of a coat or dress – just watch out for your handbag strap if you do it. 'There are no rules,' Cummings says. 'I also love to wear them over the top button of a shirt or pinned to a straw hat in summer.' A brooch is a great way to break up an all-black outfit, to fasten a scarf thrown over the shoulders or to add some sparkle to a basket or handbag. If you're looking to start, or add to, a brooch collection, try searching for vintage brooches on secondhand sites such as Vestiaire Collective or online marketplaces such as Etsy, eBay and 1stDibs – the results page feels like rifling through a wealthy, bohemian grandmother's jewellery box. Antique stores and vintage markets also often have extensive brooch collections, if you prefer to peruse in real life. From gold nose-and-mouth sculptures by Salvador Dalí to 1980s Lanvin flowers and enamel and rhinestone sea shells – each pin contains the possibility of another, fancier world. At their best, brooches should feel like small sculptures – striking from afar but still full of detail when you come closer, Cummings says. 'Weight and balance are important but above all it should carry a sense of story.'
