In Pics: Meet 24-year-old Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma, who can give Bollywood actors a run for their money
Once known purely for his skill with the bat, the 24-year-old now finds himself in the rare bracket of sporting celebrities who can give Bollywood's finest a run for their money. With record-breaking knocks, cheeky on-field comebacks, and a social media game on point, Abhishek is quickly becoming the face of India's next generation of sports icons.
Abhishek Sharma: How he became SRH's powerhouse
Abhishek Sharma's cricket journey began in Amritsar, where his father, a coach himself, trained him. He dominated the Vijay Merchant Under-16 tournament in 2015-16 with 1200 runs, then captained India to a U-19 Asia Cup win. IPL scouts took notice, and in 2018, the Delhi Daredevils signed him a week before India's U-19 World Cup victory.
He debuted with a bang—46 off 19 balls—but it was with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he moved in 2019, that he truly took flight. In IPL 2024, promoted as opener by Pat Cummins, he smashed 484 runs, including a record-breaking 63 off 23 in a 277-run team total.
The fireworks continued in IPL 2025, where his 141 off 55 against Punjab Kings became the third-highest individual score in IPL history. He has since made a successful transition to the international stage, scoring a T20I century on debut against Zimbabwe.
Charisma beyond the cricket
Abhishek Sharma isn't just batting averages and blistering knocks, he's a bona fide heartthrob, with a popularity that rivals that of movie stars. With multiple charming (and now viral) Instagram posts, the All-rounder often has fangirls flooding the comments with heart emojis and love.
According to OneCricket, even male fans can't get enough—cheering his every move on and off the pitch. That charm has also sparked dating rumors with fashion designer Laila Faisal, adding more spice to the stardom.
His mock reply to Divesh Rathi's 'notebook sendoff' had social media crowning the move the 'coldest replies of the season,' per India Times. At 24, Abhishek Sharma is not just rewriting T20 records; he's rewriting what it means to be a cricket superstar.

Fulton's men look to bounce back
Bengaluru: India struggled during the European leg of the FIH Pro League last month, losing seven of their eight matches against top teams such as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, and the Netherlands. For the Indian team, this was a tough reality check, especially as they had aimed to secure a World Cup berth. They narrowly missed the wooden spoon, finishing above bottom-placed Ireland. This experience served as a wake-up call for the team. However, there is hope on the horizon. The Men in Blue are now focusing on the Asia Cup, which begins late next month in Rajgir, Bihar. The competition offers India a chance to qualify for the World Cup scheduled to take place in the Netherlands and Belgium in Aug next year. Preparations are already underway, with a training camp set to begin on Monday. Additionally, a squad of 24 players will be taken to Australia for a two-week camp that will include friendly matches. From them, 20 players (including two standbys) will be selected for the continental competition. Gutes Hören Undo We must respect all our opponents, but we are focused on improving from our performance in the Pro League and returning to winning form," said India's head coach Craig Fulton during a virtual interaction on Tuesday. India, currently ranked No. 8 in the world, is the highest-ranked team in Asia and will enter the tournament as favourites. However, challengers like Pakistan (WR 15), Malaysia (12), and South Korea (13) could give the home team a tough competition. The Indian team must utilise the next seven weeks to address their weaknesses and bring their best performance to Rajgir. One major concern has been the performance of the backline, as they conceded 26 goals in eight matches last month. They allowed some soft goals that frustrated Fulton, who emphasises a solid defensive strategy. Also, teams frequently scored late, contributing to India's losses. India also felt the absence of their captain, Harmanpreet Singh , who missed several matches due to a finger injury. "He got hit with the ball on his finger, which opened it up. Losing your captain during critical moments is always challenging, and someone else needs to step up to fill that void. It was a tough period for us, but we are fully focused on the Asia Cup now and have learned some hard lessons," Fulton remarked.

IPL business worth over $18 billion, rises 13% in a year: Report
Representative image MUMBAI: IPL, cricket's annual showpiece event, has seen its business value jump 13% in a year to $18.5 billion - nearly Rs 1.6 lakh crore. At the same time, its brand value has risen 14% to nearly $4 billion (about Rs 33,000 crore), a report by NYSE-listed investment bank Houlihan Lokey, which has valued several sports franchises around the world, showed. The year also saw 2025 IPL winner Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking the top slot in terms of brand value among the 10 teams that compete in the league. The first-time winner in the league's 18-year history has a brand value of $269 million. In the brand valuation table, RCB is followed by Mumbai Indians at $242 million, Chennai Super Kings at $235 million and Kolkata Knight Riders at $227 million. "IPL continues to redefine sports commercialisation - not just in terms of cricketing excellence but through record auctions, landmark sponsorships, technological advancements, and an ever-expanding international footprint," the report said about the league's recent expansions and business growth. Calling IPL "a global phenomenon" that is at the intersection of sport, entertainment, and commerce, the report said that the league's "influence now extends far beyond the cricketing fraternity, reshaping fan engagement, commercial models, and the structure of the sport itself". The report pointed out that IPL's success has also catalysed a proliferation of short-format leagues across continents, "redefining the modern cricketing calendar and embedding itself as a cornerstone of contemporary popular culture". The report by Houlihan Lokey also estimated that the advertising revenue during the 2025 IPL had jumped a massive 50% to about $600 million (about Rs 5,000 crore). And in terms of viewership, the final match between RCB and Punjab Kings recorded over 678 million views, a number that was higher than the India-Pakistan clash during the ICC Championship in Feb this year, the report said. On IPL's revenue model, the report said that it represented "a near-perfect blend of predictable cash flows and cost discipline, a rarity in the global sports asset universe. "Revenues are underwritten by BCCI's long-term, well-negotiated media rights contracts and front-loaded sponsorship deals, creating annuity-like cash flows." For top franchisees, almost 80% of the costs are secured even before the tournament begins. "On the cost side, the presence of a salary cap (Rs 120 crore per team) functions as an embedded margin protector, preventing wage inflation (a major concern for global sports teams) and ensuring competitive parity among teams." In terms of costs and revenue models, IPL is seen to be superior to the English Premier League (EPL) of the UK and the National Basketball Association (NBA) of the US, the report noted. "For institutional investors, this makes the IPL not just a sports league but a high-growth compounder in the entertainment space, catering to a fast-growing fan base with rising disposable income and a strong appetite for premium digital experiences. RCB moves Karnataka High Court against CAT report on stadium stampede
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 8 (ANI): The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has approached the Karnataka High Court against a Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order blaming the team for the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives. The CAT had observed that RCB was 'prima facie responsible' for the gathering of around 3-5 lakh people outside the stadium after their maiden IPL title win. As CAT stated in its report that the announcement was 'sudden', giving no time to the Police to prepare for the crowd of three to five lakh people. RCB claimed that CAT didn't adhered to principles of natural justice and challenged CAT's findings, stating they were made without giving RCB an opportunity to be heard. The IPL faranchise pointed out that a fact-finding inquiry is being conducted by the Bengaluru DM and Deputy Commissioner, making CAT's observations premature. 'When the findings of fact are still awaited and there is no conclusive finding rendered by any body as to the purported role of the Petitioner in the said incident, the consideration of these disputed facts by the Hon'ble Central Administrative Tribunal, is premature,' the plea said. So far as seeking Police permission for the victory celebration is concerned, RCB states that as per its agreement with service provider M/s DNA and KSCA , it was these entities that were responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions and ensuring compliance with applicable law. The plea thus seeks to expunge the remarks made against RCB. Earlier, a two-person bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) observed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to be 'responsible' for the gathering of 'about three to five lakhs people' outside their home venue of M Chinnaswamy Stadium following their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win on June 4, reported ESPNCricinfo. The bench comprising Justice BK Shrivastava and Santosh Mehra, owned by Diageo, had created a 'nuisance' by proceeding with trophy win celebrations without seeking or even getting required regulatory permissions. The remarks were a part of 29-page order issued on Tuesday by CAT, which heard a case filed by Inspector General and Additional Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru (West), Vikash Kumar. Vikash was among four cops suspended by state govt, alleging 'substantial dereliction of duty' and not seeking 'guidance' causing the situation to get 'out of control, meant a lot of misery, loss of precious life and embarrassment' to the government. Vikash went on to challenge his suspension, and the CAT quashed the government order, saying the cop should be reinstated. The CAT order stated that neither the franchise nor its event management firm, S DNA Entertainment Network Private Limited, sought any permissions to conduct the title celebration parade at the stadium. CAT also pointed out that for the organisation of such events, an application has to be made a week before under the Licensing and Controlling of Assemblies and Public Procession (Bengaluru city) order, 2009. However, neither RCB nor DNA did so. The order also said on day of IPL final, June 3, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) chief executive officer Shubhendu Ghosh wrote a letter, on behalf of team's event management firm to Cubbon Park Police Station (adjacent to Chinnaswamy stadium) that of the team won the trophy, there would be 'potential victory parades' around the ground which would 'end with victory celebrations' inside the stadium. The route for the parade was shared, but permission was not sought. The CAT order said that when the letter was submitted, it was 'not certain' that RCB would win, and it did not have 'any request for granting the permission' to hold the victory parade and celebrations. 'The organiser did not wait for the response of the Police,' the order said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. 'At the eleventh hour, they submitted a letter and started the scheduled programme,' it added. The order also put out a sequence of social media announcements made by RCB on June 4, starting with the 'victory parade is scheduled in Bengaluru' the first post was done at 7:01 AM, the order said, 'at 8 am RCB posted a link on their Instagram. 'Army, We can't wait to be back to the Home of Champions and celebrate with all of you today. Details out soon.' At 8:55 AM, the same post was issued again, accompanied by a statement from star batter Virat Kohli. The order also said that on 3:14 PM on June 4, RCB posted on their socials that a victory parade will be held at 5 PM on the same day, followed by celebrations inside Chinnaswamy. The CAT pulled up RCB for 'unilaterally' putting up information on celebrations without 'obtaining the permission' or without the 'consent' of the police.' The RCB posta did advice fans to guidelines set by police and other authorities' for peaceful and prosperous conducting of the event, it also informed fans of free passes issued on franchise's official website with a 'limited entry' disclaimer. The order said since the post had no information disbursement of passes' it 'implied' the event was 'open to all' affair. The order said that this all led to 'gathering of immense proportion' at the venue, which could accommodate only 35,000 people. The order said that policy was stretched already, having to regulate the crowd in the night immediately after team's six run win at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. The cops came under immense burden as the state government organised a 'felicitation' for players. 'Therefore, prima facie it appears that RCB is responsible for the gathering of about three to five lakh people,' the order said. 'RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the Police. Suddenly, they posted on social media platforms and as a result of aforesaid information the public were gathered. Because of the shortage of time on 04.06.2025, the Police were unable to make the appropriate arrangements. Sufficient time was not given to the Police. Suddenly, RCB created the aforesaid type of nuisance without any prior permission,' it added. The order came out in defence of cops, saying that they are 'human beings', neither God (Bhagwan) nor Magician and did not have the magical powers like 'Alladin ka Chirag' capable of fulfilling a wish only by rubbing a finger.' CAT is a quasi-judicial body, dealing with issues of government and public servants. RCB itself is not part of the proceedings. Their observations will have no bearing on the inquiry set by the state government for the probe of the stampede. The inquiry is being done by ex-High Court Justice Michael da Cunha. (ANI)
