Moment woman waves down passing boat after 5 days adrift at sea in Spain

Daily Mail3 days ago

A missing British woman was rescued by a passing ship after nearly five days adrift at sea.
Police and coastguards started hunting for Mary Gavin, 39, last Wednesday evening around 36 hours after she vanished on a rented boat she had hired a day earlier on the paradise island of Formentera.
She was rescued alive late Saturday afternoon after a ferry covering the route from the Majorcan capital Palma to the mainland east coast city of Valencia spotted her and raised the alarm.
A passenger aboard the boat that discovered the woman recalled the dramatic moment they neared her as she called out for help, saying: 'She was dehydrated and sunburnt and had mouth sores. The waves complicated the rescue.'
Alejandro Rosera told Majorcan media outlet Cronica Balear: 'When we were about to pass by Formentera, we were told there was an emergency and we had to turn back.
'Later on we saw a woman on board a small boat. She had a life jacket on and another in her hand making gestures.
'It took about 40 minutes to get her onto our ship. The movement of the waves made the rescue more difficult.
'She had mouth sores and you could tell she was dehydrated so she was given water and a Coca Cola.
'Once we got to Valencia a large number of police and health professionals were waiting for her and assisted her immediately.'
News of the 5pm rescue on Saturday emerged on Sunday morning when police confirmed she had been taken to hospital in Valencia.
The vessel she had lost her way in, a cream-coloured Quicksilver 475 Axess with a Mercury outboard motor which she had hired from a rental firm at Formentera's La Savina Port last Tuesday morning, was towed to Ibiza by coastguards.
Police divers had been incorporated into the search for her last Thursday after Civil Guard and Spanish coastguards helicopters and boats were mobilized.
Speaking on Sunday morning a Civil Guard spokesman said: 'The British woman who vanished after renting a boat in Formentera on Tuesday morning has been found alive.'
The police force had said on Friday in its first official comments about the disappearance: 'The missing woman is a 39-year-old British national who hired the boat in the port of La Savina in Formentera on Tuesday morning.
'She was supposed to return it around 6pm on Wednesday and when she didn't her friends became worried and raised the alarm.
'From the time she was reported missing on Wednesday evening a search operation was launched which continued throughout the day yesterday. She hasn't been found yet nor has the boat she was on.
'The Civil Guard's Judicial Police unit has been investigating this woman's disappearance but two vessels belonging to our Maritime Unit were mobilized yesterday along with one from the specialist sub-aquatic GEAS unit.
'The officers from the Maritime Unit conduct the searches from speedboats and the GEAS are essentially diving specialists.'
A police source said last week the missing woman had been living on one of the Balearic islands for around two months, although it was not immediately clear if the island is Ibiza or Formentera.
No more details have been given out by local authorities about what they think went wrong and why the woman had ended up adrift and in difficulties.

Brit woman, 43, killed on jet ski in horror crash with speedboat driven by ‘drunk' friend in Costa Del Sol

A BRIT woman has been killed in a jet ski accident in Spain's Costa del Sol. The 43-year-old is believed to have tragically died on the scene after being hit by a speedboat driven by her intoxicated friend, according to police. 1 Police said she was being driven by a friend who failed a breath test after the fatal crash at a beach called Los Toros - just west of the popular holiday resort of Estepona. A spokesperson for the Civil Guard in Malaga said: 'I can confirm the dead woman is a 43-year-old British national. 'She was a passenger on the jet ski.' A police source said: 'The jet ski was being driven by her partner. They appear to have been hit from behind by a friend at the wheel of a speedboat. 'He failed a breath test after the collision so he's likely to have been arrested but that is not something I can confirm at this stage.' is your go-to destination for the best celebrity news, real-life stories, jaw-dropping pictures and must-see video. Taxi driver 'sexually assaulted British tourist' after picking her up in Magaluf and 'told her "this is how things are done in Spain" after kicking her out of cab'

A taxi driver 'sexually assaulted' a British holidaymaker after picking her up in Magaluf before allegedly telling her as he kicked her out of his cab: 'This is how things are done in Spain so get used to it.' A friend of the holidaymaker's hailed the taxi to help get her back to her hotel safely because she had been drinking heavily in the resort's party strip Punta Ballena. But the 'rogue driver' switched routes and took her to Palma airport instead after telling her to pay €50 (£43) upfront and getting her to move to the front passenger seat. Public prosecutors allege the 28-year-old cabbie took advantage of the fact the 33-year-old British tourist was alone and drunk to touch her on her breasts and between her legs during the ride. Indian-born Ranjit Singh was last night warned he faces up to three years in jail if convicted after being charged with sexually assaulting the tourist. Public prosecutors also want him to compensate her with €7,000 (£5,990) if he is found guilty at trial. The incident he will go to court over allegedly happened in the early hours of October 3 2023. A three-page pre-trial indictment submitted by public prosecutors states the alleged victim's friend stopped the taxi Singh was identified as driving to take her to her hotel from the Punta Ballena strip 'due to her state and to protect her.' It adds outlining the prosecution's case: 'The friend told the accused where he should take her. 'A few metres into the journey, the accused stopped the vehicle and told the British woman she should pay €50 for the fare upfront and move from the back to sit beside him in the passenger seat. 'She followed his instructions, paying with a card. 'Following on from that the accused, taking advantage of an inebriated woman who was alone in a place she didn't know, changed the agreed route and took the motorway towards the airport. 'On the way, with lascivious and lustful intent, he touched her breasts and her groin over her clothes and tried to kiss her. 'When they reached the airport he told her to get out and said: "This is how things are done in Spain so get used to it." Public prosecutors say the British tourist has needed counselling for 'severe anxiety and depression' she suffered, adding in their indictment: 'The main problem are the traumatic flashbacks.' It is not yet clear how the accused cabbie will plea when the case gets to court. A date for the trial has yet to be set.

One dead and two injured after explosion damages Philadelphia homes

One person died and two others were injured after an explosion damaged several homes on Philadelphia's north side early on Sunday, according to authorities. Firefighters responded to a report of an explosion just before 5am, according to the Philadelphia fire department. The department's executive officer, Daniel McCarty, said there was extensive damage to about five homes, including collapsed structures. One person died, and two others who were rescued were hospitalized. McCarty said one was reported stable while the other was in critical condition. Authorities had not determined the cause of the explosion. Crews were expected to continue search and rescue operations. 'The biggest thing is the stability of the surrounding houses, making sure that this hazard doesn't spread,' McCarty said. 'This will be an extensive, all-day operation for the Philadelphia fire department.'
