As the Canary Islands prepares for an insufferably busy summer season, despite swathes of local protests, one tiny airport seems to be struggling to keep up with the demand
Brits heading to the Canary Islands have been warned over ongoing chaos in one of its busiest airports. Last year, the archipelago, located off the coast of northwestern Africa, witnessed a staggering 15.5 million international visitors - despite a series of anti-tourist protests ordering holidaymakers to 'go home'.
According to Spain's airport magnate Aena, 8.7 million of these tourists entered the Canaries through César Manrique Airport (also known as Arrecife Airport) in Lanzarote.

But, with just one runway and a tiny duty-free area - the hub is edging dangerously close to its nine million capacity. As a result, the airport is often swamped with tourists - who are forced to wait in long queues waiting to get through passport control.

According to Canarian Weekly, the chaos is being caused by three key issues: staffing shortages, faulty equipment, and an 'inadequate passport control area'. All of these factors are creating a 'bottleneck at one of the island's main gateways' - despite promises to improve the airport.
Last month, the Spanish National Police said it was ready to deploy 45 new immigration officers to the aviation hub. As previously reported, this would effectively 'double the workforce' in the area and make passing through passport control a complete breeze.
A spokesperson for the Canary Islands said the much-needed upgrade had been recommended for several years now - and warned that the new staff members should be exclusively assigned to work on border control duties. However, local media claims only 11 new immigration officers have actually been deployed - and only two of them are actually working in the passport control section.
Oswaldo Betancort, the president of the Lanzarote Cabildo, has slammed the worsening situation, branding it 'a joke'. "I will be sending a formal letter from the Presidency to the Government Delegation to get clarity on this issue. We will not stop fighting for Lanzarote," he said.

It paints a bleak picture for Brits heading over to Lanzarote during the busy summer period. Tourists are likely to have a similar experience as the Mirror's Discover Editor Victoria Chessum - who witnessed the airport's carnage last year.
"On arrival to the airport we had been informed numerous flights back to the UK had been delayed due to poor weather and visibility - something no one can help," she explained. "But the impact of this at Arrecife was dire - with no place to sit, let alone stand, while queues of people attempted to get food, or even reach their gate.
"When we decided to brave one of the long lines for dinner, we were made to wait an hour for our order to simply be handed to my husband, who then spent around 10 minutes trying to get through swarms of people to find us. We had reluctantly perched on the end of someone's table."
Victoria isn't the only person with a negative review of the airport - which has amassed a slew of one-star ratings on Google. "I was waiting in the queue for bag check / boarding pass for an hour," one person moaned. "The woman at the desk was chatting to other staff the entire time even though there were two long queues of people waiting." Another branded the hub 'chaotic and unorganised'.

Pilots have been warned of flight dangers with a red aviation alert after the eruption of Krasheninnikov. While it is listed as an active stratovolcano, it has not erupted for around 600 years - before observations were made. New footage emerged today of tsunami waves climbing up the land in the remote Kuril Islands. A man and his dog retreating could be seen fleeing as a fresh warning was issued following another earthquake of 7 on the Richter scale in eastern Russia. The dramatic footage was captured on Shumshu Island, just off the southern coast of the Kamchatka peninsula. Vsevolod Yakovlev, head of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, said today: "Its eruption is not something out of the ordinary for a region with high volcanic activity. "During satellite monitoring, thermal spots have been repeatedly noted in the area of the Krasheninnikov volcano. "This is a significant increase in temperature on the Earth's surface compared to neighbouring areas." Tsunami warnings following last week's quake have since been lifted. It is also home to the Valley of the Geysers, and has one of the world's largest concentrations of brown bears. Russian volcanologist Alexei Ozerov said: "A crack opened up along the volcano from the top of the crater, and a steam-gas mixture is currently rising from this crack. "Emissions are occurring, and a large amount of ash was ejected during the opening of the crater crack. "This ash reached the Valley of Geysers, and …the smell of gas… "A question is immediately raised about the evacuation of the Valley of Geysers, those tourists who are there." But according to Russian officials, there was no immediate threat to life or wildlife. The response team said: "The explosive eruption of the volcano continues. "Ash explosions up to 10 km (32,800 ft) above sea level could occur at any time. "Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft." Whilst all-inclusive holidays are a popular option for many, there are certain risks travellers need to be aware of before jetting off, and one expert has shared some top tips A travel expert has issued a stark warning that while all-inclusive getaways might appear tempting, they can pose certain dangers. ‌ Before flying out to your resort, it's crucial to understand potential threats, particularly when it comes to food and drinks. ‌ Grant Winter, a compliance officer at travel insurance company Good To Go, warns that food in certain destinations may harbour illnesses such as cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A. ‌ More frequently, though, holidaymakers could be struck down by a. nasty bout of sickness and diarrhoea from food or beverages contaminated with bacteria the body is not used to. To help guarantee tourists can enjoy their getaway without being stuck in their rooms, Winter has the following dos and don'ts... Brits face horrible consequences if they fall for new 'free surgery' holiday scam Brits warned vaping in popular holiday hotspot could land them in prison ‌ Water He highlights the significance of water safety, recommending travellers choose bottled water as the most dependable option when overseas, even if internet sources suggest local tap water is safe. He insists: "Ensure the lid of the bottle is well sealed before you drink it. If you can't get access to bottled water for whatever reason, only drink tap water that has been boiled, use chlorine tablets or iodine to sterilise the water. "Always be sure to avoid prolonged exposure to iodine though - this method isn't best when doing it more than once or twice." ‌ Buffet dangers Grant cautions against eating cooked food that's been left out for too long. He recommends hitting the all-inclusive buffet early to avoid food that's been exposed to the elements for a prolonged period. He further advises: "It's also better to avoid food that has flies buzzing around it, and only eat raw fruit and vegetables that you have peeled yourself to reduce the risk of contamination." Steer clear of ice While water should be approached with caution, ice presents another problem, as Grant explains. "Don't forget about the risk of ice cubes in your drinks. In many cases, these are probably made from untreated tap water (however, some large resorts do use bottled water, so it's always worth checking), which can cause you to get sick." ‌ Be aware of food poisoning risks Grant emphasises that you "should always check to see if the food is piping hot throughout before eating, but when abroad you should be extra vigilant of this. "For example, eating tropical fish that haven't been cooked properly can lead to ciguatera fish poisoning, and unpasteurised dairy such as ice cream from a street vendor, could harbour salmonella, listeria, or campylobacter, leading to food poisoning." Don't forget personal hygiene The expert emphasised that, although it may seem self-evident, this should be your "number one priority abroad to help avoid food poisoning and contamination. Always wash your hands after the toilet and before eating or preparing food, and make sure you take an alcohol-based hand gel to use when you're out and about before eating any food."

Most people take it for granted to get on a flight and go on a hot holiday abroad, but for some, it isn't that simple. New research has today shown that almost 64% of people and families with a disability wouldn't want to go abroad this summer. And this even comes after the government earlier this month published a report highlighting just how far the UK has to come to make flying more accessible for people living with a disability. The data also shows nearly half of Brits have avoided travel abroad altogether because of ongoing accessibility issues, leaving those who are disabled feeling 'helpless, humiliated and angry'. This is a feeling all too familiar for disability advocate and television presenter Sophie Morgan. She recently called for greater protections for the disabled community after the government proposed changes to the welfare system aimed at saving £5bn by the end of 2030. Sophie was shortlisted at Metro's Scope Awards for the Celebrity Role Model category and the TV presenter is no stranger to facing accessibility issues. She spoke out after her £8,000 wheelchair was broken on a British Airways flight which left her in an unsafe aisle. The Loose Women star was also held up at Heathrow airport after a ground handler refused to let her on board with a £4,000 wheelchair attachment. She told Metro: 'This honestly makes us feel helpless, humiliated, and angry.' Sophie has used a wheelchair since being paralysed from the chest down after a car crash when she was 18 years old. While Sophie checked in her wheelchair and batec (battery-powered attachment) separately on her BA flight, in transit they were attached incorrectly, which has left it unusable. Posting about it on Instagram at the time, many other people told Sophie they had faced similar incidents when travelling, and that their chairs had been damaged or completely broken too. She continued: 'There's nothing quite like sitting on a plane after everyone else has disembarked, waiting and wondering if anyone is even coming to help, or watching your wheelchair—your independence—being mishandled through a plane window. 'These are not isolated incidents; they are happening every single day. Each time it chips away at your dignity and your trust. 'The number one barrier is uncertainty. When you're disabled—or travelling with someone who has accessibility needs—there are just too many unknowns. 'Will the airline damage your mobility aid? Will you be able to use the toilet during the flight? Will the hotel have the access it claims? Most families simply don't have the luxury of taking that risk. 'Accessibility information is often vague, unreliable, or missing entirely, leaving us vulnerable.' Around 20% of the UK population has an accessibility need, according to The Purple Round. For many disabled passengers, it is the emotional and psychological impact of international travel that puts them off. For example, accessibility issues in hotels, the booking process being challenging and problems with transport links. Liz Williams, 51, from Brackley uses a wheelchair and regularly encounters issues when trying to travel abroad. She said: 'I was recently unable to attend a wedding in Cyprus with my partner as the accessibility access was not good enough. 'There are airports and airlines that I actively avoid due to the poor treatment I have received in the past. 'This includes early for check in and still boarding last, no aisle transfer wheelchair available, being told I could not board when all other passengers could due to adverse weather (not true as it turned out). 'Other problems include being horrifically manhandled by special assistance, not following correct procedure, in front of a plane full of passengers which left me crying while being transferred into an airline seat.' 42% of Brits have not travelled abroad in the last year due to accessibility concerns. 67% agree that booking travel for people with access needs is a major barrier. Disabled passengers and their families do not feel adequately supported, with 40% of those surveyed having avoided flying over the past year. Over half (56%) agreed that airlines are not well-equipped to support disabled passengers. While a further 58% agreed that international airports are not equipped to do so. Long delays at the airport remain a significant problem for people and/or families with accessibility requirements. 51% of survey respondents cited this as their main concern when travelling abroad. Source: Transreport The Aviation Accessibility Task and Finish Group report was published this month which recommends key changes and recommendations to help improve accessibility for disabled passengers. Talking about what needs to change, Sophie told Metro: 'We need mandatory standards, stronger penalties, and public transparency about performance. Otherwise, it's just more promises. 'Disabled travellers have been waiting far too long for real change—and we deserve more than good intentions. We deserve action.' 1. 'It is frustrating that today, in 2025, we, disabled people, continue to face this exclusion and marginalisation by the travel industry. 'The travel industry has to move beyond token gestures and embed accessibility into the very fabric of its services. 'True inclusion means designing for everyone from the outset, so that the right to travel is a reality for all citizens, not just a privilege for non-disabled people.'
