Bangladesh's Muhammad Yunus not stepping down amid growing unease: ‘Overcoming obstacles'
"He [Muhammad Yunus] didn't say he will leave. He said that while we face many obstacles in carrying out the work and responsibilities assigned to us, we are overcoming them,' he told reporters after an unscheduled meeting of the advisory council.
'He [Yunus] is definitely staying.'
Meanwhile, Muhammad Yunus has convened an unexpected meeting of the advisory council on Saturday.
The move followed Yunus's announcement expressing his intention to resign as chief adviser, citing challenges in navigating the political deadlock and the inability of parties to reach a consensus on reforms.
'He is likely to sit with the Advisers (effectively ministers) shortly after the ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council) meeting,' which is underway as scheduled, a news agency reported.
According to the reports, Muhammad Yunus is likely to meet the advisers along with former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami later on Saturday.
According to the chief adviser's press wing, a BNP delegation would meet the chief advisers at 7:00 pm while Jamaat leaders would meet him at 8:00 pm. 'We have been invited by the Chief Adviser's Office to hold a meeting over the latest political situation,' a BNP spokesman told the media earlier.
Just a few days ago, Muhammad Yunus said that he was mulling stepping down as he felt 'the situation is such that he cannot work". Earlier on the same day, Muhamad Yunus had also told his Cabinet that he wanted to step down.
NCP convenor Nahid Islam said he urged Yunus "to stay strong for the sake of the country's security and future and to meet the expectations of the mass uprising' (and) I hope everyone will cooperate with him'. Advisers of Yunus' cabinet also persuaded him to not relinquish the post.
Meanwhile, special adviser to Muhammad Yunus affirmed that he would not step down. 'For the sake of Bangladesh and a peaceful democratic transition, Professor Yunus needs to remain in office,' Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said in a Facebook post, adding, 'The Chief Adviser is not going to step down. He does not hanker after power.' He later deleted the post.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus now heads the interim government that replaced her administration. Hasina faces several charges at Bangladesh's international crimes tribunal, including allegations of command responsibility during the government's crackdown on anti-regime protests in mid-2024. According to United Nations estimates, up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August of that year. Hasina has denied all allegations. Pawan Kalyan, who is the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, conveyed that it is important that people from southern states learn Hindi, while at a public event in Hyderabad. Prakash took to social media to call out the Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister in a post which loosely translates to, "Selling (yourself) for this? Ugh… how shameful." He reacted to a video of the Dakshin Samvad event run by the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in Hyderabad. In the video, Pawan encourages more people to adopt Hindi, particularly in the southern states. "I love my language. But I don't want to be trapped in it. I want to use it in a way that elevates me," Pawan said at the event. "If we only hold on to our mother tongue and get stuck there, we may not be able to communicate with the rest of the country or the world. Language should not become a cage." He also commented that he attempts to speak in the language of the region he is in, and explained why he personally uses Hindi on social media. "If we can learn foreign languages, why hesitate with Hindi? Hindi is easily understood across the country. Let us resolve to love Hindi, adopt it, and promote it," Kalyan said. On the work front, Pawan Kalyan will be next seen on the big screens in the much-awaited 'Hari Hara Veera Mallu', releasing on July 24. FIR against 10 in Lucknow realtor suicide case
Two days after a 36-year-old Lucknow-based real estate businessman died by suicide after going live on Facebook, Gudamba police registered an FIR on Friday against 10 individuals for alleged abetment, mental harassment, and extortion, naming them based on the realtor's pre-recorded statement in a video. A police official confirmed that the video is part of the evidence and said statements will be recorded soon. (REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE) Following a complaint filed by the deceased's elder brother, Gudamba police registered an FIR late Thursday under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (assault) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The 10 people named in the FIR include local businessmen, acquaintances, and associates. According to the complaint, they had been pressuring the businessman for money, visiting his house repeatedly, hurling abuses, and issuing threats, ultimately pushing him to the edge. A police official confirmed that the video is part of the evidence and said statements will be recorded soon. 'The case has been registered and the matter is under active investigation,' said Gudamba station house officer Prabhatesh Kumar Shrivastav. The realtor, who operated from a small rented office near Tedhipulia crossing, shot himself in the head using a guard's licensed firearm on Wednesday afternoon. Just 15 minutes prior, he went live on social media, detailing the financial and emotional turmoil that led him to take the extreme step. In the over 12-minute long video, which has since gone viral, the businessman claimed he had ₹15 crore debts and had been under intense pressure for the last two-and-a-half years. He made a desperate appeal to politicians and Bollywood A-lister stars to come forward and help his family with ₹20-25 crore to ensure they are not harassed after his death. He even confessed that he sometimes doesn't have money to buy insulin for his diabetic minor daughter. 'My days are so bad that sometimes I don't even have money to buy insulin for my diabetic daughter,' he said in the emotional video, which included multiple references to people he claimed had been threatening him and demanding repayments. The deceased is survived by his wife, three daughters, father and brother.
