Gold smuggling case: ED raids continue at premises linked to Karnataka Home Minister Parameshwara
According to sources, searches continued in Siddhartha Engineering College, Siddhartha Medical College and Siddhartha College in the state.
The ED sleuths on Wednesday raided 16 locations in the state under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) targeting hawala operators and accommodation entry operators who allegedly made "fake" financial transactions into Rao's accounts.
The Enforcement Directorate filed a PMLA case a few months ago after taking cognisance of a CBI and DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) complaint into a larger gold smuggling racket in India, including the case of Rao.
ED sources claimed that 'an educational trust' is suspected to have 'diverted' funds and made a payment of Rs 40 lakh towards the credit card bill of Rao, allegedly on the instructions of an influential individual.
Rao was arrested on March 3 at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru after arriving from Dubai.
Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials detained her and seized gold bars weighing 14.2 kg and valued at over Rs 12.56 crore.
Rao and co-accused Tarun Kondaru Raju were granted bail on Tuesday by a special court for Economic Offences in Bengaluru in connection with the gold smuggling case.
The court approved their default bail applications after the DRI failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated period.
Rao, however, will continue to remain behind bars.
Authorities have filed a separate case against her under the stringent Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA), a preventive detention law designed to tackle smuggling and preserve foreign exchange reserves.
Under COFEPOSA, individuals can be held without trial for up to a year based on suspicion of involvement in such activities.

The Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust and an ex-trustee Chetan Mehta have alleged that Jagdishan had taken a bribe of Rs 2.05 crore from one of the past trustees while the bank and the petitioner said the trust and the petitioner who is an ex-trustee are defaulters and the case is an attempt to delay the payments to the bank. According to a Friday report by LiveLaw, which is an online publication that covers legal matters, a bench of justices PS Narasimha and R Mahadevan declined to entertain his plea observing that it was improper on the part of the Supreme Court to intervene in a petition that is already listed before the Bombay High Court for hearing on July 14. He had approached the apex court saying three Bombay HC judges had recused from hearing the matter, causing a delay in the hearing.

Let us come here without any fear, without any hesitation, and let us set a new example of brotherhood and love,' he said. Emphasising the Centre's commitment to a prosperous Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Minister highlighted the government's vision of transforming Jammu and Kashmir into a horticulture hub, especially for apples, almonds, and walnuts. 'We are establishing a state-of-the-art Clean Plant Centre with an investment of Rs 150 crore to ensure disease-free, high-quality planting material. This will allow our farmers to compete globally,' he said. He added that private nurseries will be supported through subsidies, and a tissue culture lab dedicated to saffron cultivation will also be set up. 'Our goal is to bring world-class technology and support to every farmer in the valley,' the minister said. Focusing on rural development, Chouhan stressed that no poor person will be left house ledd in in Jammu and Kashmir. 'Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, a survey of 5 lakh people has been conducted. Eligible beneficiaries will receive housing support after verification,' he assured. Bengaluru House Fire: Man sets relative's house on fire over financial dispute in Bengaluru; accused on the run
BENGALURU: A 45-year-old man allegedly set fire to the house of his relative over a financial dispute in Vivek Nagar on Tuesday. According to the police, there were no casualties reported in the incident, but the house of the victim was damaged. According to the complaint filed by Sathish Kumar, 41, a resident of 4th Cross in Vivek Nagar, the incident happened around 5.20 pm on July 1. Satish lives in a three-storey building with his mother, Venkataramani, her brother Mohandas, Vijay Kumar, and Ravikumar. He works as a security training and inspection manager at a private firm in Whitefield for the last nine months. Satish said that around eight years ago, his brother's daughter, Parvati, took a loan of Rs 5 lakhs from his mother, Venkataramani, for the marriage of her daughter, Mahalakshmi, aka Ammu. Venkataramani asked Parvati to return the borrowed money. When his mother asked for the money back, Parvati and her daughter Mahalakshmi got angry and abused his mother with abusive words. They allegedly asked, "Your husband died with the money, and did you give me the money to us?" and abused her filthily. They also threatened the family with dire consequences. On the evening of June 30, Mahalakshmi called Satish's number and told him, "Your mother and your brother Ravi are asking us for money repeatedly. Tell them not to ask for money; otherwise, they threatened with dire consequences." Following the threats, Satish and others went to Parvati's house around 7.30 pm and questioned why they were fussing. They asked them to discuss the issue and fix things before returning home. After returning to the house, Satish checked the CCTV footage installed in their house and found Subramani pouring petrol starting from the entrance of the house, the shoe rack, and setting it on fire with a matchstick. Satish accused Subramani of making efforts to kill his mother and brother. The Vivek Nagar police registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 109 (attempt to murder), 326 (mischief by injury, inundation, fire or explosive substance, etc.), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace). The accused is at large, and efforts are underway to nab him, a senior officer said.
