Elon Musk leaps to Donald Trump's defense following WSJ ‘hit piece'
The tech billionaire has repeatedly demanded the release of the unredacted documents related to the disgraced financier's sex-trafficking case since dropping the ' really big bomb ' last month, a baseless claim that Trump was withholding the files because they implicated him.
After the Journal described on Thursday a birthday card that appeared to be signed by Trump for Epstein's 50th birthday, Musk abruptly shifted gears, coming to the former president's defense.
'Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret,' the message read, according to the newspaper. The report states text is surrounded by a drawing of a naked woman, punctuated by a squiggly 'Donald' mimicking pubic hair.
Hours after the report's release, the president's former first buddy said: 'It really doesn't sound like something Trump would say tbh.'
Musk retweeted a summary from his AI tool, Grok, casting doubt over the authenticity of the birthday card. In another similar Grok summary, he replied with a fire emoji.
Trump denied having anything to do with the card, claiming, 'I never wrote a picture in my life.'
'I don't draw pictures of women,' he told the Journal. 'It's not my language. It's not my words.'
He also threatened to sue the Journal if the story was published – a threat he has now vowed to act upon. In a Truth Social post on Thursday night, the president stated that he plans to sue the newspaper, its parent company, News Corp, and its owner, Rupert Murdoch, soon.
'The Wall Street Journal, and Rupert Murdoch, personally, were warned directly by President Donald J. Trump that the supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE and, if they print it, they will be sued,' Trump wrote, referring to himself in the third person.
'Mr. Murdoch stated that he would take care of it but, obviously, did not have the power to do so,' he continued. 'The Editor of The Wall Street Journal, Emma Tucker, was told directly by Karoline Leavitt, and by President Trump, that the letter was a FAKE, but Emma Tucker didn't want to hear that. Instead, they are going with a false, malicious, and defamatory story anyway.'
The president also described several lawsuits he has filed against the press, including ABC and CBS, which were settled.
The report comes as the Trump administration continues to face backlash after a Department of Justice and FBI memo released last week stated that there was no evidence that Epstein had a 'client list.'
Trump has since dismissed Epstein's case as a 'hoax,' a 'scam,' and 'bull****.'
He has accused his Democratic predecessors and former officials of fabricating documents related to the case, while chastising some of his MAGA base calling for the files' release, branding them as 'weaklings.'
As constituents apply pressure on the GOP to provide more transparency around the Epstein files, House Republicans voted down a Democratic amendment Thursday night.
Lawmakers attempted to advance a bipartisan bill calling for the full release of documents related to the convicted sex offender's case.
Early Friday morning, Musk admitted on X that it would be 'hard to accept a clean bill not going to a vote.'

Trump's Turnberry course is 'worthy' of hosting the British Open, says DeChambeau
American golfer Bryson DeChambeau appears to have a good relationship with President Donald Trump, with the pair once enjoying a round that has been watched more than 15 million times on YouTube. Now the two-time major champion is doing some British Open campaigning for him. DeChambeau, one of golf's biggest names, said on Friday he was all for Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland hosting an Open Championship for the first time since 2009. 'I look at it as a golf course,' DeChambeau said of the stunning links venue along the Ayrshire coast. 'It's one of the best golf courses in the world, and I'd love for it to be a part of the rotation. 'Albeit I haven't played it, I've heard so many great things about it, and anytime you get to play a special historical golf course like that, I think it's worthy of it, for sure.' Turnberry is still on the R&A's 10-venue British Open rotation but isn't playing an active role. It last hosted the Open 16 years ago — before Trump bought the resort — when a 59-year-old Tom Watson made bogey on the 72nd hole and wound up losing a playoff to Stewart Cink. Speaking ahead of the Open being played this week at Royal Portrush, R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said transportation and other issues had to be addressed before Turnberry got its hands on the oldest major championship again. Darbon said the R&A met with Eric Trump and other leaders of Trump Golf a few months ago regarding the 'big logistical challenges' facing Turnberry, and that the talks had been constructive. DeChambeau believes Trump would make Turnberry a special Open venue. 'He'd still probably respect the R&A and what they're trying to accomplish,' DeChambeau said. 'I can't speak on his behalf, but what I can say is knowing him, he'll do his best of a job as he possibly can.' DeChambeau's relationship with Trump is such that he joined him on stage at an election party in Florida in November before Trump was declared president again. DeChambeau also had a round of golf with Trump and some short-game practice on the South Lawn of the White House a few months ago. So what of his audience with Trump around this time last year, when they attempted to break 50 off the forward tees at the president's Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey using the scramble format? It went on YouTube and was a huge success. 'Got like 15 million views or something,' DeChambeau said. 'It was fun.' DeChambeau was speaking after shooting 6-under 65 in the second round of the Open at Royal Portrush in a bid to make the cut, having opened with a 78. ___

17-year-old charged with murder in paddleboarder's killing at a pond in rural Maine
Authorities in Maine said Friday they have charged a 17-year-old with murder in the death of a paddleboarder who went missing on a rural pond. The body of Sunshine Stewart, 48, of Tenants Harbor, was found this month on Crawford Pond in Union, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Portland. The killing shocked and scared the community, where trips to the pond and nearby campground are a summer staple. Maine State Police said a teenager was taken into custody without incident in Union on Wednesday night. Police did not say initially why he was arrested or if he was charged, and they declined to release any other information about him as the investigation is ongoing. The state attorney general's office said Friday that the teen was charged with one count of murder. The office did not identify the teen and did not immediately say when the person was due in court. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined Stewart's cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma, police said. Police said Thursday that the investigation was still active and they were seeking information from anyone who may have seen Stewart paddleboarding on July 2 on Crawford Pond. Stewart lived about 21 miles (34 kilometers) from the pond, which is a popular summer destination about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from the scenic coastal areas of the state's midcoast region. A person reached by phone who identified herself as Stewart's sister declined to comment. Friends of Stewart have posted online testimonials remembering her as fiercely independent and always up for a challenge, including outdoor adventures and building projects. Over the years, she worked in many roles, including as a fisherman and bartender, friends said. She renovated her home in Tenants Harbor, a neighborhood in St. George, said Bruce Twyon, a friend who knew Stewart from her time living in the Virgin Islands. That spoke to her self-motivation and spirit of 'getting things done and enjoying life every day,' he said. 'She was such a sweet person and very strong and independent, and took care of a lot of people,' Twyon said. The pond, in the 2,400-resident town of Union, is about 600 acres (243 hectares) and does not have public access. It is available for a variety of uses, including boating and fishing. The 100 Acre Island preserve in the center of the pond is a wooded island reachable by canoe, kayak or paddleboard from a nearby campground. The pond has numerous nooks and narrow areas, so it's possible there were other boaters on the water at the time of the killing who were unaware someone was in danger. Police said in a statement the arrest was the 'result of relentless investigative work' and that the teen was taken to Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. Loved ones of Stewart — who was known as 'Sunny' by her friends — launched a GoFundMe page to help celebrate her life. The page said memorial service dates were being determined.
