Incredible footage captures moment drowning young girl caught in rip current is saved by fisherman's drone

Daily Mail17-05-2025
This is the incredible moment a Florida fisherman saved a young girl from drowning in a riptide by using a drone to drop a life preserver.
Andrew Smith, of Pensacola, was scouting the water off Fort Pickens Beach for sharks with his SwellPro Fisherman Max drone when he spotted a young girl, who was not identified, caught up in a riptide, Fox 4 Now reported.
'There was this girl screaming: "Can anybody swim?"' he recalled to the outlet.
Smith, who cannot swim, was desperate to help her when he noticed several life preservers on the beach on Thursday.
Using his drone, he grabbed one and flew it to the girl.
'I flew it out there and I missed really bad on the first drop,' he told Fox 10. 'A lady grabbed another one for me. I was pretty nervous, we flew it out there and we got it down to her.'
Video footage, shot by fellow beachgoer Robert Nay, showed Smith's second attempt of getting the floatation device down to her.
The drone can be seen dragging the device through heavy wind and gray skies as it drops to nearly water level for the girl to grab onto.
'She got it, woo!' a bystander yelled.
'She was way out there. If I didn't get her with that one, I don't know if she would have made it any longer,' Smith told Fox 10.
First responders arrived shortly after and were able to pull the girl to safety.
The young girl was swimming with two other girls when she got caught in the riptide, Nay wrote on Facebook.
A single red flag was flying on the beach that day, indicating that beachgoers should avoid going into the water.
No lifeguards are currently stationed at the beach and won't be until Memorial Day.
'[Smith] literally saved her life and bought time for fire and rescue to get there!' Nay said.
The fisherman's drone is designed to be used while fishing and has the ability to hold up to two life jackets.
'The drone has two releases on the bottom and can be used for fishing, and you can carry two life jackets on it and get to people fast. It has a camera on it too, so I could see the girl's head on the camera,' he told the outlet.
No lifeguards are currently stationed at the beach and won't be until Memorial Day.
The girl's father contacted Smith after the event, 'actually crying and thanking me,' he told Fox 4 Now.
Smith hopes in the future he won't have to use his drone to save another life, but is grateful to have been able to help.

Date set for Ghislaine Maxwell's bombshell testimony as fears mount for her safety in prison

is scheduled to be deposed by lawmakers in early August, a top Republican has shared as fears percolate that she could be harmed in prison. 'I have issued a subpoena to Ghislaine Maxwell for a deposition to occur at Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee on August 11, 2025,' House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., announced on Wednesday. 'The Department of Justice is cooperating and will help facilitate the deposition at the prison.' The scheduled meeting comes one day after Republican Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee pushed to have Maxwell subpoenaed after accusing the administration of hiding the full Epstein files. And Maxwell wants to talk too, according to a source who told the Daily Mail 'she would be more than happy to sit before Congress and tell her story.' 'If Ms. Maxwell agrees to testify before Congress and not take the 5th—and that remains a big if—she would testify truthfully, as she always has said she would and as she will with Mr. Blanche,' Maxwell's lawyer David Markus told the New York Sun. 'The truth should not be feared or preemptively dismissed.' The rush to get the Epstein accomplice's testimony comes as some have floated concern about her protection. 'Just to be sure, I requested that she be placed immediately into protective custody and monitored - by guards as well as working surveillance equipment - around the clock, so that our justice system does not again fail the survivors of this Epstein nightmare,' Republican Rep. Scott Perry posted on X. Trump's closest allies and rank-and-file members - including House Oversight Chairman James Comer, Anna Paulina Luna, Nancy Mace and Marjorie Taylor Greene - backed the subpoena for Maxwell. The move makes it possible that Maxwell's deposition could be recorded and even televised, though Comer has not shared whether it will be. It comes as the White House has been cagey about releasing the full Epstein files, setting up a stand-off between Republicans and Trump. That's in contrast to what Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Tuesday - that the Department of Justice will meet privately with Maxwell in the 'coming days.' 'As for the Congressional subpoena, Ms. Maxwell is taking this one step at a time,' her lawyer said. 'She looks forward to her meeting with the Department of Justice, and that discussion will help inform how she proceeds.' Burchett's move puts both Trump and GOP leadership in a sticky situation, powerless to control what the imprisoned Epstein accomplice will say. The lawmaker first shared he was considering how to get Maxwell's testimony last week. He originally asked Oversight Chairman James Comer to allow Maxwell to testify in a public, televised hearing. The Tennessean said if Maxwell refuses, then the committee should subpoena her. The committee approved Burchett's motion for Maxwell's deposition, meaning the 63-year-old who is serving a 20-year-sentence for sex trafficking may have a chance to air her story to members of Congress craving more information on the sordid saga. 'The Committee will seek to subpoena Ms. Maxwell as expeditiously as possible,' an Oversight spokesperson said. 'Since Ms. Maxwell is in federal prison, the Committee will work with the Department of Justice and Bureau of Prisons to identify a date when Committee can depose her.' If it is similar to recent depositions done by the committee, there is a chance her testimony could be recorded, even televised. Recent depositions of former aides to Joe Biden have been recorded as the Oversight Committee probes the Democrat's mental acuity and whether his diminishing abilities were covered up by staff. 'We just got to get to the bottom of this thing, folks,' the Tennesseean said in a video he posted on X after the successful vote. 'It's four years and, you know, we don't need to tolerate this stuff anymore.' 'I get the blow back about folks up here are going to be mad at me, but ultimately, with all sincerity, excuse me, I'm answering my Creator on this issue,' he said. The push for the Epstein accomplice's testimony comes amid extreme pressure on Capitol Hill to release files related to the financier's crimes and death. The House canceled votes on Thursday due to complications with Epstein. The Rules Committee, which determines what bills make it to the House floor for votes, has been paralyzed since Democrats on the panel have continuously worked to force Republicans to vote against the Epstein files being released. The political jockeying has frustrated GOP members on the panel, some of whom have sided with Democrats on rules committee votes to avoid pushing back against the release of the high-profile documents. Already Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., has introduced a bill that would force the Department of Justice to release most of its files on Epstein. Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican leadership have also been supportive of additional Epstein files being published. 'He [Trump] wants maximum transparency, but he's also very insistent that we do not subject people who have been already been victims of unspeakable crimes to further public scrutiny,' the speaker said on Tuesday. 'We have a moral responsibility to expose the evil of Epstein and everybody was involved in that, absolutely, and we're resolved to do it.' Johnson and his team are virtually powerless in stopping Massie's measure. If Massie's bill garners at least 218 co-signers - and almost all Democrats and some Republicans have already said they'd vote for it - then it will get a vote on the House floor. Dubbed the Epstein Files Transparency Act (EFTA), the measure already has bipartisan support and is expected to be voted on once the House returns from August recess in September. The only material in the files that would be withheld are portions relating to abuse or death, personal identifiable information of victims and content that would jeopardize active federal investigations or compromise national security. If the bill secures passage, the DOJ would have 30 days to post the documents online for Americans to see. According to the bill, any redactions in the potential DOJ documents would have to be explained in a short memo as to why the material was blotted out.

Shock 'extortion' claims emerge after pro boxer and influencer Stefi Cohen's arrest on domestic violence charges

Stefi Cohen is the victim of 'extortion' and 'abuse' at the hands of an illegal immigrant, her boyfriend Tristan Hamm has claimed after a domestic violence charge against the professional boxer and influencer was dropped. Cohen - full name Stefanie Cohen Magarici - was arrested on July 2 amid allegations she assaulted her boyfriend at their Miami-area home. But on Wednesday, TMZ reported that prosecutors dismissed the case after Hamm refused to cooperate. He told TMZ that Cohen is, in fact, the victim of a 'bigger' crime. 'This was a complete misunderstanding, neither party called the police, and yet an arrest was made,' Hamm said. 'What's really happening here is bigger: Stefanie is being extorted by an illegal immigrant who defrauded her and her employees for years and is now manipulating the legal system to continue that abuse. 'This arrest only gained traction because of two bogus cases tied to the same individual, which distorted the perception of the officers. She's innocent, plain and simple. Her case being dismissed today is proof of this. 'What we're dealing with is a calculated scheme to defame her and defraud her as well as the media and millions of Americans in an attempt to cover up his immigration and financial scheme. And it's finally coming to light.' MORE TO FOLLOW

Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner was swimming with eight-year-old daughter when he drowned

Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner was swimming with his eight-year-old daughter when he drowned in Costa Rica. Warner, who as a teenager played Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died at 54 in an accidental drowning, local authorities said Monday. Two surfers noticed the actor and his daughter struggling in the water and jumped into action, as reported by ABC News. One of the surfers put Warner's daughter on his board and took her to safety, before a volunteer lifeguard also tried to help the actor. Volunteer lifeguard Mike Geist told AZ Family he and another surfer rushed in. The volunteers found Warner below the surface, near the ocean floor, Geist said. The surfer then pulled the actor to the surface and started rescue efforts. When Warner did not respond, they pulled him from the water and got additional help. 'There were two doctors that were also here just on vacation,' Geist said. 'Between the three of them, they were able to perform CPR for more than 30 minutes, probably more like 45 minutes, and unfortunately, it was not successful.' Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department said Warner drowned Sunday afternoon on a beach on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. He was swimming at Playa Cocles in Limon province when a current pulled him deeper into the ocean. Local officials ruled Warner's cause of death as asphyxiation by submersion. Following Warner's shock death, lifeguards from Playa Grande — a beach community located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica — released a statement saying they were not present due to lack of 'resources.' 'We deeply regret the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner at Playa Grande. He was swept away by a strong rip current and died by drowning,' the Caribbean Guard, Costa Rica's volunteer lifeguard association, shared via Facebook on Monday. 'It all happened very quickly, and although there were people on the beach who entered the water to rescue him, they did not arrive in time.' 'He was pulled from underwater without vital signs, and despite CPR maneuvers being performed on the beach, resuscitation was unsuccessful.' The Guard added that Playa Grande is one of their 'most challenging beaches,' noting the presence of signs in English and Spanish that warn of the 'danger of death due to drowning.' Warner worked for more than 40 years as an actor and director, also starring in the sitcoms Malcolm & Eddie and Read Between the Lines, and in the medical drama The Resident. His final credits came in TV guest roles, including a dramatic four-episode arc last year on the network procedural 9-1-1, where he played a nurse who was a long-term survivor of a terrible fire. Warner played Theo Huxtable for eight seasons, appearing in each of the 197 episodes of The Cosby Show and earning an Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a comedy in 1986. The actor created many TV moments etched in the memories of Generation X children and their parents, including a pilot-episode argument with Cosby about grades and careers, and another episode where Theo tries in vain to hide his ear piercing from his dad. Theo was the only son among four daughters in the household of Cosby's Cliff Huxtable and Phylicia Rashad's Clair Huxtable on the NBC sitcom, and he would be one of the prime representations of American teenage life and Black boyhood on a show that was the most popular in America for much of its run from 1984 to 1992. Warner is survived by his wife and young daughter, born in 2017. Their identities have not been revealed.
