Oswal Pumps set to debut today. GMP signals modest listing gain

Economic Times20-06-2025

Oswal Pumps is scheduled to make its debut on the NSE and BSE on Friday after a strong response to its Rs 1,387 crore IPO, which closed on June 17. Market participants are eyeing a listing premium of around Rs 41, going by the latest grey market premium (GMP), which indicates a possible upside of 6–7% over the issue price of Rs 614 per share.
ADVERTISEMENT The IPO, which comprised a fresh issue of shares worth Rs 890 crore and an offer for sale of Rs 497.34 crore, was subscribed 34.42 times overall.
The Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) portion led the charge with a subscription of 88.08 times, followed by 36.70 times in the NII segment, and 3.60 times in the retail category. Anchor investors had already committed Rs 416.20 crore ahead of the public offering.
Analysts remain positive on the company's long-term outlook. Mehta Equities, in its pre-listing note, has advised allotted investors to hold for the long term, citing Oswal's diversified product base across the agriculture, industrial, and domestic water segments, and its potential to benefit from the government's push for rural infrastructure and solar-powered irrigation systems."Despite market volatility, the strong QIB and HNI response reflects confidence in the company's fundamentals," said Prashanth Tapse, Research Analyst at Mehta Equities. He expects a 10–15% listing gain, backed by Oswal's strategic market position and valuation comfort.Founded in 2003, Karnal-based Oswal Pumps has executed over 26,000 solar pump installations under government schemes and exports to 17 countries. In the nine months ending December 2024, the company reported a revenue of Rs 1,067 crore and net profit of Rs 216 crore, reflecting robust operational performance.
ADVERTISEMENT For investors who missed out on allotment, Mehta Equities suggests looking to accumulate on dips post-listing, especially if broader market weakness weighs on initial performance.

DoT begins fresh demand study for direct spectrum for private 5G networks

In what could be a setback for telecom operators, the department of telecommunications (DoT) on Monday initiated a fresh demand survey to assess interest in assigning 5G spectrum directly to enterprises for setting up private networks. If approved, the move could allow large firms to bypass telecom service providers for high-speed, automated connectivity within their campuses and factories. The demand study has also been undertaken by DoT to identify the prospective frequency bands for the direct assignment of spectrum for captive non-public networks (CNPN) based services. Notably, enterprises with more than ₹ 100 crore net worth, willing to set up CNPNs by obtaining spectrum directly from DoT, can participate in the demand study. Further, system integrators interested in establishing CNPN networks for such enterprises can also participate, DoT said in a notification. The DoT clarified that the demand survey is being conducted to assess the demand for direct spectrum assignment to CNPNs, and participation in this exercise does not entitle the entities to any claim for spectrum assignment. This means that companies such as Infosys, Capgemini, GMR, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Communications, Tata Power and Tejas Networks, among others, will again have the opportunity to present their case for getting direct spectrum from the government to set up private 5G networks. In 2022, these companies were among 20 companies that had participated in a similar demand study by DoT for spectrum, primarily in the 3,300-3,670MHz band. However, the DoT did not act on these requests at the time. On 24 June, Mint reported that the Centre was weighing the case for allocating spectrum directly to enterprises and will soon assess the demand for such dedicated networks. 'During recent analysis, it was observed that the device ecosystem for CNPN is mostly available in IMT (international mobile telecommunications) bands and 5G technology has also considerably advanced with different use cases. Also, system integrators are keenly interested in establishing a CNPN-based network,' the notification said. 'Certain frequency bands were initially proposed for direct assignment of spectrum to CNPN licensees. However, it was observed that there was a lack of device ecosystem in the frequency band identified for CNPN,' the notification added. The DoT clarified that the demand survey is being conducted to assess the demand for direct spectrum assignment to CNPNs, and participation in this exercise does not entitle the entities to any claim for spectrum assignment. A private 5G network, also referred to as a captive non-public network, is designed exclusively for an enterprise's internal use. Unlike public networks, private 5G networks operate in a closed environment, providing dedicated connectivity to industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, automotive and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). This ensures seamless automation and operational efficiency within factory premises and corporate campuses, free from interference from public networks. Notably, the DoT will conduct the demand survey through the Saral Sanchar portal from 1 July to 31 July. Despite three years since the launch of 5G in the country, private 5G networks have not taken off. The reasons include higher costs, security concerns and the absence of compelling use cases such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Additionally, many enterprises have found that 4G networks and Wi-Fi solutions are sufficient for their automation and connectivity needs. According to a February report by the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), India has only 10 private networks compared to 325 in the US, 101 in Germany, 65 in the UK, 55 in China and 43 in Japan. The association counts companies such as Apple, Intel, Ericsson, Nokia and Qualcomm as members. There are 80 countries with at least one private mobile network, the GSA said in the report. In 2022, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) offered four options for setting up private networks: using a telecom company's network slice, purchasing private network services from telcos, leasing spectrum from telcos, or receiving direct spectrum allocation. The DoT chose the first three in May 2023, opting not to assign spectrum directly. However, in February this year, Trai recommended creating a CNPN provider authorization under Section 3(1)(b) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, which would allow enterprises to set up and run their own private 5G networks independently.

Reliance Defence eyes India's ₹20,000-cr defence MRO mkt with new JV

Reliance Defence Ltd on Monday signed a pact with US-based defence contractor Coastal Mechanics Inc. (CMI), as the Anil Ambani-promoted company eyes India's ₹ 20,000-crore defence maintenance, repair, overhaul (MRO) and upgrade market. Reliance Defence is a 100% subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. According to the agreement, Reliance Defence and CMI will set up a joint venture (JV) unit at Mihan in Maharashtra to provide MRO, upgrade and modernization services for air and land defence platforms used by the Indian armed forces. The JV will look to modernize and upgrade over 100 Jaguar, 100 MiG-29 fighter aircraft, 20 Apache attack helicopters and L-70 air defence guns. Reliance Defence is also targeting to become one of India's top three defence exporters. 'The segment represents a high-value, long-duration opportunity driven by the Indian military's strategic shift from asset replacement to lifecycle extension and performance-based logistics,' the company in a statement. Market analyst Ajay Bagga said that rising geopolitical risks will bolster defence expenditure globally, creating export opportunities for India's defence manufacturers and service providers. 'From Asia to Europe there is a surge in defence expenditure in the light of increasing geopolitical risks. Indian defence majors, both in the public and private space, will benefit from both domestic rollouts and export opportunities,' said Bagga. 'We are expecting Indian defence sector to see accelerated expenditure as the armed forces seek to build inventories and to plug gaps in weaponry and systemic capacities in the light of Operation Sindoor. We expect multi-year increases in Indian defence outlays.' Vinit Bolinjkar, head of equity research at Ventura Securities, sees the announcement of the JV as a positive step. 'India is a cost-efficient market and hence attractive for MRO. Given the tie up with Coastal Mechanics which is an authorised contractor will enable Reliance Defence to source business from the US Department of Defence, which is the largest defence spender in the world,' said Bolinjkar. Major General KK Sinha, Kargil War veteran and defence expert, told Mint that he is confident about India's defence manufacturing capabilities. 'While it is important to be self-reliant, we also need to have modernized equipment to match the generational leap. India is bound to emerge in the the global defence manufacturing industry,' he said. He also said that India's export market can capture the needs of NATO nations as the defence budget targets are reset.
