Karnataka Chief Secretary writes to her Andhra Pradesh counterpart requesting to allow Totapuri mangoes from State
With Kolar, the major mango growing district in Karnataka, sharing the border with Andhra Pradesh, mango farmers there are heavily reliant on the processing units in Chittoor.
The Andhra Pradesh government decided to impose this ban to support the Totapuri growers of the State as the production has been more than the capacity of the processing units. It has also declared a support price of ₹4 for a kg of totapuri mango.
Talking to The Hindu, Ms. Rajneesh said, 'I wrote the letter following the protest of farmers in Kolar and the report of the Deputy Commissioner.'
In her letter to K. Vijayanand, Chief Secretary, Andhra Pradesh, she said, 'This abrupt and unilateral restriction has caused significant distress to mango farmers in Karnataka, particularly those in the border districts who cultivate large volumes of Totapuri mangoes and rely heavily on the Chittoor-based processing units for marketing their produce. Disruption of this long-established inter-State trade linkage poses immediate threats to their livelihoods and may result in substantial post-harvest losses.'
She added, 'Beyond the economic hardship to farmers, such a move undermines the spirit of cooperative federalism and risks triggering retaliatory sentiments. There is already apprehension that affected stakeholders in Karnataka may obstruct vegetable inflows from Andhra Pradesh, escalating into unnecessary inter-State tensions, something we must all strive to avoid.'
However, mango farmers from Kolar district said that with the highly reduced quality and quantity of the mango yield this year, taking it to the processing centres does not make much difference.
'We are selling Totapuri at ₹4 a kg (₹4,000 a tonne) while we incur a cost of ₹10-₹12 a kg to grow it. Even if we are allowed to take it to Andhra Pradesh, we will not get any better price,' said Neelaturu Chinnappa Reddy, president of the Kolar District Mango Growers' Association.
Farmers of Kolar, especially Srinivasapur taluk, have been demanding a mango processing unit there for many years. 'It has been our longstanding demand, as the lack of a unit here has made us overly reliant on those in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Government after government has failed to set it up,' Mr. Reddy said.
Farmers in Srinivasapur observed a taluk-level bandh on Wednesday, demanding a support price for mangoes. Due to weather vagaries and diseases, the mango yield has dropped to less than 30% this year, according to farmers.

The conspiracy came to light on July 26, 2023, when the anti-dacoity cell of the Pimpri-Chinchwad police carried out a major operation in Talegaon Dabhade based on a tipoff. Initially, two persons were arrested whereas a further probe led to the arrest of seven persons in total. All accused have a criminal history involving murder, attempt to murder, extortion, arson, and possession of illegal arms. The police recovered nine pistols, 42 live cartridges, machetes, and other deadly weapons from them. During interrogation, the accused revealed that the seized weapons were meant to be used in the planned murder of Shelke. The accused hail from Madhya Pradesh, Jalna, Vadgaon and Kalewadi and reportedly have no personal enmity with Shelke, raising suspicions of a powerful mastermind operating behind the scenes. However, after Shelke once again highlighted the serious nature of the conspiracy, Kadam assured that an SIT would be constituted to investigate the matter in detail. Kadam also asked Shelke to share whatever information the latter might have with the police so as to help take necessary action.

Sebi bans Jane Street, says disgorge Rs 4.8k crore
US fund Jane St banned from D-St over 'mkt manipulation' MUMBAI: Markets regulator Sebi late on Thursday banned US-based foreign fund Jane Street from the Indian market for manipulating stocks and derivatives segments over several years to make huge illegal gains. Jane St, known for their quant-based trading strategies, has also been asked to disgorge nearly Rs 4,850 crore - illegal gains accrued to them by trading on the NSE between Jan 2023 and March 2025, a Sebi order said. This is the highest-ever disgorgement amount ordered by Sebi for any kind of illegal activity in the market. In an interim order, Sebi banned JSI Investments, JSI2 Investments, Jane Street Singapore and Jane Street Asia Trading, from trading in the Indian market until further notice. The markets regulator's investigation will continue. Multiple Strategies: So far, Sebi has identified two types of manipulative strategies. One was to buy heavily in Bank Nifty's 12 constituent stocks and futures in the morning session, then buying put options on the index, selling the stocks aggressively in the afternoon to pull down Bank Nifty that in turn pushed up index options prices to eventually make huge profits. The other strategy was to push for concentrated selling or buying in the last two hours of the expiry day to swing index levels and make investigation report noted that although Jane St incurred some losses in some parts of the trades, profits from the rest more than made up for the losses. Rs 36,502 cr profits: Sebi's interim investigation showed that between Jan 2023 and March 2025, Jane St had made a total profit of Rs 36,502 crore. During that period, on Jan 17, 2024, the trading firm had made a profit of Rs 735 crore, the highest single-day gain for the now-banned foreign fund. NSE caution letter: While Sebi was investigating Jane St's trading activities, on Feb 6, 2025, NSE had issued a caution letter to Jane Street Singapore and its related entity, asking them to refrain from taking large positions in the Indian market and to refrain from undertaking certain trading patterns. However, in disregard of NSE's caution letter, and the group's commitments to the exchange, "Jane St was observed to continue to run very large (trading) positions in index options", Sebi's report said there is a strong case that the period of investigation as well as exchanges on which Jane St had traded could be expanded to unearth the full scale of manipulation in the Indian market by the US-based global quant trading giant. "The interim order has only looked at 18 major days of prima facie Bank Nifty index manipulation on expiry day between Jan 2023 and March 2025), and three days of nifty index manipulation on expiry day during May 2025," sources said. "Investigations into other expiry days, other indices (including across exchanges), and other potential patterns besides the two highlighted in the order will need to continue." "There should not be any major market impact from this enforcement action," sources said. "In the long run, the growth in market confidence, and a free and fair market, should aid responsible investing and capital formation."
