#SHOWBIZ: 7 production companies get Finas incentive

THE National Film Development Corporation (Finas) has awarded the Feature Film Screening Incentive 2.0 totaling RM613,702 to nine local films through seven qualifying companies.
Its chief executive officer, Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, said the incentive handover was made after all the films had been screened in cinemas through the Compulsory Screening Scheme.
"The presentation of this incentive is intended to encourage local filmmakers to continue contributing their work to the development of the country's creative industry.
"Through this incentive programme, Finas also provides about five per cent incentives for any local film that enters the Compulsory Screening Scheme based on ticket collections achieved in cinemas nationwide.
"This is a Finas initiative so that local production companies can produce the next film to encourage producers to produce box office works with higher collections.
"However, the constraints that are currently in place are the high entertainment duties. This incentive is also to reduce the burden on local producers," he said.
The seven production companies that received the incentives were MIG Pictures Sdn Bhd, Fiesk Sdn Bhd, Scifilm Sdn Bhd, Hug Pictures Sdn Bhd, Empire Film Solution Sdn Bhd, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Bhd and Mangkin Prestif Sdn Bhd.
The nine films that are eligible for the incentive are 'Jangan Pandang Belakang: Aku Tahu Asal Usulmu', 'Takafur', 'This Land Of Mine', 'C 4 Cinta', 'Lubuk', 'Danum', 'Reeza', 'Papa' and 'Dajal: Satu Malam Dipedajal'.

VMY2026: Tourism Malaysia backs 'Worth The Wait' to boost country's global appeal

VMY2026: Tourism Malaysia backs 'Worth The Wait' to boost country's global appeal Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism Malaysia is stepping up efforts to promote the country by leveraging the global reach of international films, in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2026. The latest initiative is through the film 'Worth The Wait', a collaborative project between the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) and King Street Pictures, an international production company. Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Manoharan Periasamy said film is a powerful medium for showcasing Malaysia's beauty to global audiences, and the ministry fully supports foreign production companies that choose the country as a filming location. "One of our key objectives is to promote Malaysia through cinema. We strongly encourage more international film companies to select Malaysia as their filming destination," he said at the premiere of Worth The Wait today. He said Tourism Malaysia is actively involved in promotional efforts, positioning Malaysia as a filming destination and leveraging the film's cast and producers as ambassadors for the VMY2026 campaign on social media platforms. Manoharan said the film's cast, predominantly of Asian descent, with millions of followers on digital platforms, can significantly boost Malaysia's appeal among international travellers. In addition to the collaboration with Worth The Wait producers, he said the ministry and Finas are also actively engaging with more international production companies. He noted that film-based promotion offers broad and rapid reach, as movies today are distributed not only in cinemas but also via online streaming platforms. He said this collaboration presents a win-win opportunity for the ministry, government agencies and international filmmakers in promoting and showcasing Malaysia's unique attractions. During the screening, producer Rachel Tan shared that the film is loosely inspired by her personal love story, which began as a long-distance relationship between Malaysia and the United States. "Worth The Wait is not just entertainment, but also a reflection of love, faith and hope. Dan Mark (producer) and I wanted to create something that celebrates our Asian identity while speaking to audiences around the world. "The response so far has been incredibly encouraging," said the former Miss Malaysia. Partially filmed at various locations across Malaysia, Worth The Wait reflects ongoing efforts to promote Asian representation in North America while also showcasing Malaysia's diverse natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage and renowned hospitality, qualities that continue to position the country as a world-class travel destination. Produced by King Street Pictures, the film is scheduled for theatrical release in Malaysia this August, with distribution by Astro Shaw. Directed by Tom Shu-Yu Lin, the film features a star-studded cast including Ross Butler, Lana Condor, Andrew Koji, Sung Kang, Elodie Yung and Golden Horse Award-winning actress Karena Lam, acclaimed across Hong Kong and Taiwan, alongside Malaysia's own Kheng Hua Tan. The film marks a significant milestone for Malaysian cinema, standing as one of the few romantic dramas to achieve both international theatrical and streaming success. It has already gained popularity as a streaming original in Hollywood, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, and is set to premiere in cinemas across Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia. – Bernama

Aku, Ayah dan Muzik brings fresh perspective to local film scene

Published on: Friday, July 04, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 Text Size: Hanis and the film's production team. KOTA KINABALU: Sabahan director Hanif Jeff has made his mark with Aku, Ayah dan Muzik , a supertelefilm that offers a fresh take on local storytelling. The 29-year-old filmmaker's work centres on Noah, a young man's emotional journey to find his estranged father in Sabah. Advertisement Featuring actors such as Fimie Don, Enn Xaviera, AD Vico and Jovenea Jim, the film blends family themes with a strong cultural backdrop. Its soundtrack, Bisikan Waktu , mixes traditional Sabahan instruments with modern music to enhance the film's emotional depth. Originally a short film finalist in the BMW Shorties, Hanif expanded the story to explore heavier themes like grief and identity. He described the supertelefilm as a personal 'redemption' to revisit ideas he had omitted due to time constraints in the original version. The story draws inspiration from Hanif's own life and reflects family dynamics in Sabah, including reconnecting across religious divides. Filmed in locations such as Kota Kinabalu, Kota Belud and Kundasang, it highlights both the natural beauty and emotional stillness of Sabah. Hanif said the project faced financial constraints, with the team producing it on a tight budget and no profit, driven purely by passion. Production spanned about two months, with strong support from friends and crew who kept morale high despite occasional challenges. Fimie Don was cast as Noah after impressing Hanif in a music video, eventually exceeding expectations in bringing the role to life. Backed by a RM100,000 grant from Finas, the telefilm airs on TV1 and RTMKlik at 9pm tomorrow (Saturday), with Hanif eyeing future festivals and a full-length adaptation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Young filmmakers elevate local Tamil cinema quality, says FINAS

KUALA LUMPUR: Young filmmakers shifting from digital platforms to cinema are significantly improving the quality of local Tamil films, according to the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS). Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, FINAS chief executive officer, noted that these emerging talents bring fresh, high-quality storytelling to the industry. 'The film I watched recently, Mirugasirisham, showcases the kind of quality often seen in works by first-time filmmakers. These are people who started out creating content for social media and YouTube, and now they're making films - and the results are truly impressive,' he told Bernama. Azmir praised the film's strong narrative, direction, and performances, comparing its quality to Tamil films from India. However, he pointed out that limited promotion has hindered its reach. 'Many of our viewers still believe that watching local films in cinemas isn't worth it. But they should come out and support these screenings, because the quality of our local productions is now truly comparable,' he said. FINAS remains committed to supporting all local filmmakers, regardless of language or genre. Azmir cited the success of C4 Cinta, which earned over RM2.5 million last year, as proof of growing audience acceptance. Meanwhile, Mirugasirisham producer Dr Sai Suthan Krishnan acknowledged the film's critical acclaim but lamented its underwhelming box office performance. 'Every Malaysian who has watched the film, whether Indian or from other communities, has given glowing reviews, particularly for its storytelling and technical aspects,' he said. Sai stressed the need for stronger box office numbers to attract investors and sustain the industry's growth.
