Federations seeks ban on Murugan devotees' meet in Madurai

Time of India02-06-2025
Madurai: The Madurai Madha Nallinakka Makkal Koottamaippu (Madurai Religious Harmony People's Federation), a federation of 40 civil society organisations, submitted a petition to district collector M S Sangeetha on Monday seeking a ban on the Murugan devotees' conference scheduled for June 22 at Amma Thidal.
The federation alleged that the event, organised by outfits like Hindu Munnani, promotes communal tension under the guise of spirituality. In their representation, the collective expressed concern that the conference could disturb Madurai's tradition of religious harmony and inflame communal sentiments.
The petition pointed to past incidents of unrest, including those in Thiruparankundram, as examples of how such events led to tensions in the region.
The federation urged authorities not to permit programmes that might incite discord in the name of faith.
The federation also announced plans to organise a 'People's Unity Conference' on June 29 at Obulapathithurai. The event will focus on fostering inclusive worship, communal harmony, and interfaith understanding. The organisers also requested the district administration to ensure equal application of the law and permit their event as a peaceful counterpoint.

Plea in HC against Murugan statue

Chennai: Madras High Court has directed the state forest department to respond to a petition to halt construction of a 184-foot-tall Murugan statue at Marudhamalai, Coimbatore. A special division bench of Justices N Satish Kumar and D Bharatha Chakravarthy passed the order on a plea moved by animal welfare activist S Muralidharan. According to the petitioner, Marudhamalai, located within the Coimbatore forest region, lies along an important elephant corridor and is an ecologically sensitive area. "Elephants use this area as a passage to move between the Nilgiri forests and other forest zones. Constructing a 184-foot statue in this region would require the clearing of forest land, which could disrupt elephant movement and lead to an increase in human-animal conflict," he said. He claimed that no Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was conducted for the project and that necessary approvals were not obtained from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) or the forest department. Therefore, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the state govt to stay all the construction activities related to the statue. He further wanted the court to direct the authorities to close illegal resorts operating in Anaikatti, another known elephant corridor. Hindu Munnani members detained for staging protest against construction of STP at cremation ground in Coimbatore

Over 150 members of Hindu Munnani were detained on Friday for protesting against the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) at the cremation ground in Chokkampudur, Coimbatore. The protesters assembled outside the Coimbatore Corporation office at Town Hall, opposing the project on the grounds that the site—located in a densely populated area and directly opposite a private school with over 1,000 students—was inappropriate for a sewage facility. S. Satish, a member of the outfit's state executive committee, said the Corporation continued the work despite petitions to the District Collector and civic officials. Alleging that human remains were exhumed from the site, he accused the Corporation of ignoring public sentiment. He also claimed similar activity at cremation grounds in Kallampalayam and Suganapuram, where sites were reportedly used for garbage segregation. 'Across the State, Hindu cremation grounds are being repurposed for civic projects,,' he alleged. They said the work was rushed despite objections and warned of further protests. The outfit has planned to approach the court, citing religious and emotional concerns over the exhumation. The police said the protest was held without permission, and those who had gathered were detained.
