Tribal uprising grows as thousands reject Pakistan's failed military solutions in Waziristan and Mohmand
In Mohmand district's Mian Mandi Bazaar (Halimzai tehsil), a massive rally brought together tribal elders, political leaders, and civil society members under one voice. Leaders from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP), and Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) joined hands to declare that the state had failed to deliver peace in the tribal belt, Dawn News reported.
'We pay taxes and abide by the law. All we ask for is peace in our homeland,' said local JI leader Firdous Safi. The killing of Maulana Khan Zeb, a respected voice for tribal rights and peace, was widely condemned.
In North Waziristan, the Utmanzai Jirga Aman Pasoon held a demonstration in Miramshah, reiterating their opposition to any new military campaign. Spokesperson Mufti Baitullah stated that past operations like Zarb-i-Azb had not resolved the region's issues. 'We won't allow another military operation,' he said. The jirga demanded the release of elder Malik Akbar Khan, imprisoned for eight months, calling it essential for rebuilding trust with the government, Dawn News noted.
Baitullah also announced the next protest would be held in Dattakhel, where residents have endured an 11-day curfew, severely restricting movement and livelihoods.
Meanwhile, in Lower South Waziristan, an eight-day sit-in at Wana Bypass Chowk ended after successful negotiations between protest leaders and government officials. According to Dawn News, the district administration agreed to reopen the Angoor Adda border crossing, address law and order concerns, and affirm tribal ownership of local mineral resources.
South Waziristan Chamber of Commerce president Saifur Rehman Wazir said the prolonged closure of Angoor Adda had devastated trade. 'Markets have collapsed, and traders suffered losses worth billions,' he stated.
As Dawn News highlighted, these peaceful yet defiant demonstrations underscore widespread frustration and demand for peace, rights, and dignity across the tribal districts. (ANI)

Balochistan [Pakistan] July 25 (ANI): The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) asserted that its members killed at least seven Pakistani soldiers during a military engagement lasting three days in the mountainous region of Noshki, with four BLA fighters losing their lives in the process. The group also reported the death of another fighter who had been severely injured in a previous assault in Surab, according to the report by The Balochistan Post (TBP). A statement from BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch stated that the Pakistani military initiated a substantial offensive on July 19 in the Noshki area, utilising helicopters and drones for support. In retaliation, BLA fighters conducted combat operations in various locations to impede the military's progress, TBP reported. The spokesperson noted that the fiercest clashes occurred at a site known as Sheshari, where both sides engaged in close-quarters combat that lasted for two days. The BLA alleges that seven special commandos were killed and numerous others were injured. The group admitted that four of its fighters died during this conflict. The BLA pledged to pursue its armed struggle with increased vigour and expressed its dedication to the cause of national liberation, TBP report revealed. The BLA's attack on Pakistani forces is part of a prolonged insurgency in Balochistan, where separatist groups have been fighting for greater autonomy and the acknowledgement of Baloch rights. The conflict has escalated in recent years, with assaults targeting military, paramilitary personnel, and government facilities. These factions contend that the Baloch people are being marginalised and exploited by the federal government, particularly because of the region's rich natural resources. In response, Pakistan's military has carried out counterinsurgency operations aimed at quelling the rebellion. Nevertheless, human rights organisations have raised alarms over claims of forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and the excessive use of force during these operations. Reports have brought to light the significant issue of forced disappearances, with activists and civilians allegedly detained without proper legal procedures. Additionally, the military's heavy-handed methods are also facing scrutiny. Human rights advocates have stated that these actions create a climate of fear and instability, further widening the rift between the Pakistani government and the Baloch populace. (ANI)

"World sleeps; while it is awake, its conscience is buried": Chidambaram raises concerns on humanitarian crisis in Gaza
New Delhi [India], July 24 (ANI): Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday raised concerns on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and said that every day, the number of killings in the region is in the double digits, with many of them being women and children. In a post on X, Chidambaram said, 'Humanity is shamed in Gaza Every day, the number of killings in Gaza is in the double-digits. Many of them are women and children who had nothing to do with starting the conflict.' He said that 1000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza while trying to get food. 'According to the U.N., over 1000 Palestinians have been killed since May while trying to get food in the Gaza Strip Look at the pictures of hungry children at refugee camps. It is obvious they are starving -- and dying,' Chidambaram said. 'The world sleeps; while it is awake, its conscience is buried,' he said. Earlier, India called for immediate ceasefire in Gaza, uninterrupted humanitarian aid and release of hostages to address the deepening crisis in the region. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council's quarterly open debate on the Middle East, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said that mere pauses in hostilities are not enough to address the worsening humanitarian situation. 'Intermittent pauses in hostilities are not enough to address the scale of humanitarian challenges confronting the people, who grapple daily with acute shortages of food and fuel, inadequate medical services and lack of access to education,' Harish said. He expressed concern over the collapsing healthcare and education systems in Gaza. 'WHO estimates that around 95 per cent of all hospitals in Gaza are damaged or destroyed. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reports that more than 6,50,000 children have had no schooling for over 20 months,' he said. Al Jazeera cited figures from Gaza's Health Ministry, reporting that Israel's war on Gaza has now killed at least 58,386 people and wounded 139,077 since October 7, 2023. In Israel, approximately 1,139 people were killed during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and over 200 were taken captive. (ANI)
