Florida Man Gets Headbutted by Shark While Surfing in Dramatic Footage: ‘Felt Like Getting Hit by a Car'
Darren Kaye was surfing when a spinner shark jumped out of the water and knocked him off his surfboard
"It felt like getting hit by a car," Kaye told WFTV 9A surfer from Florida had an unexpected encounter with an airborne shark.
In a video shared on social media, Darren Kaye was captured surfing in the waters of New Smyrna Beach in Florida when he was headbutted by the large fish.
'A spinner shark jumps out of the water and hits Florida Man sitting on his surfboard! #nsbinlet video: @dj_kaye_,' the caption read on a joint Instagram post between Kaye and NSB Inlet.
Spinner sharks are known for "spinning in the air" while trying to find food and can reach 20 feet above the water's surface, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History.
'I was just really happy its mouth wasn't open cause that's how they fish,' Kaye, who was knocked off his surfboard after the impact, told local media outlet WFTV 9.

According to the outlet, the surfer had previously seen sharks at the beach and had even witnessed other people sustain shark bites. However, he never expected to be hit by a shark jumping out of the water.
'I got right back on that board and my pulse went to like 195 beats per minute in a second and I paddled as fast as I could like out of the way,' he said.
Kaye went on to compare the moment to when he was previously hit by a car.
'I have a scar and that's like what it felt like. It felt like getting hit by a car. It was really strong and powerful. They're all muscle, you know,' he said.
Despite the unexpected encounter, Kaye hasn't been put off from surfing at New Smyrna Beach.
The surfer revealed that he continued to surf there throughout the weekend and beyond.
'We always have waves, so we're lucky,' he told the outlet.

Arrowhead Game Studios' Helldivers 2 will make the jump to the Xbox Series X and S consoles on August 26th, costing $39.99. This is the first PlayStation-published title to launch on Xbox. What initially seems like a serious sci-fi title often gives way to funny, emergent moments, thanks in part to its Strategem system, which requires you to input complex button combos while facing down swarms of enemies. There are a variety of missions you can take on against aliens, robots, and a newer Illuminate species. And, since it's a live-service title, the lore and the stakes are always evolving (and the developers often troll players). It's a fun world to be immersed in, even if you're just grinding the free battle pass for weapon upgrades. Horror Icons Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley Team Up for Supernatural Slasher COVET — GeekTyrant
Two of horror's most recognizable faces are finally colliding in a new blood-soaked nightmare. Kane Hodder, the stuntman and actor who famously played Jason Voorhees in four Friday the 13th films, and Bill Moseley, the twisted face of The Devil's Rejects and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 , are joining forces for a new horror-thriller titled Covet . The film comes from writer-director Brian McQuery, whose debut feature Plea starred horror royalty Heather Langenkamp. Covet is described as a supernatural whodunnit with a sinister twist: 'When a sleazy car salesman is framed for the murder of his mistress, he must prove his innocence — only to learn the forces responsible may not be human.' McQuery seems ready to tap deep into genre roots while playing to his stars' strengths. The director said: 'I'm thrilled to work with Kane in a role crafted to take advantage of both his intimidating presence and sense of humor. And I can not wait to see what Bill Moseley will do with his portrayal of Sheriff Troy.' Covet is being produced by Spyder Dobrofsky under his Worlds Apart banner. Dobrofsky has been steadily carving out a space in indie horror, having recently produced The Weeping , featuring Doug Jones and Reggie Lee, and directed Down Below , starring Eric Roberts and Bai Ling. Dobrofsky is clearly banking on horror fan fervor with this cast: 'Icons Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley sharing the screen together, with Brian's wildly original script, is exactly the type of horror we've been looking for at Worlds Apart. 'We couldn't be more excited to bring Brian's vision to life, and give the horror audience the chills, scares, and nostalgia they love so much.' Both Hodder and Moseley come with serious slasher legacy credentials. Beyond his Friday the 13th legacy, Hodder terrified audiences as Victor Crowley in the Hatchet franchise. Moseley, meanwhile, remains a fan-favorite for his absolutely unhinged turns as Chop Top in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Otis Driftwood in Rob Zombie's film universe.
