Gio Reyna largely benched at Club World Cup with Borussia Dortmund future uncertain

As the U.S. national team prepares to vie for a Gold Cup championship without him and several other regulars Sunday night against Mexico, polarizing young American and local product Gio Reyna did not get off the bench again in his supposed homecoming on Saturday. The 22-year-old Reyna did not play at all in his Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 knockout loss to La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium. The talented midfielder logged only 12 minutes in Dortmund's five matches on U.S. soil this summer, and his limited usage could lead to a transfer in the coming months to benefit his development — especially with a crucial World Cup on the horizon in 2026 for the USMNT in North America after the hiring of head coach Mauricio Pochettino last September. Gio Reyna hardly played in the Club World Cup. Borussia Dortmund via Getty Images Reyna's attitude issues and lack of playing time were controversial storylines at the previous World Cup in Qatar in 2022 under since-fired coach Gregg Berhalter, who publicly clashed with the young player's parents, including former national team captain Claudio Reyna. With Gio Reyna, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and others not rostered during this CONCACAF window, the U.S. squad has relied upon and received intriguing production from several emerging players during its Gold Cup run. Diego Luna, Malik Tillman and Patrick Agyemang are among those building cases to play themselves into creative roles a year from now. Including Saturday's match, Reyna only saw action in Club World Cup play against South Korean club Ulsan Hyundai in the group round. Interestingly, Dortmund had used Reyna as part of its marketing campaign for its time in the U.S. There had been some thinking that Reyna might get on the pitch Saturday with Jobe Bellingham — whose brother Jude plays for Real Madrid — suspended for the quarters due to yellow-card accumulation. Gio Reyna has been the source of much controversy with the USMNT. AP But Dortmund manager Niko Kovac did not use Reyna for the fourth time in five games, casting further doubt about his future with the German power. It would make sense for him to seek a transfer if he's not in the plans. Earlier this year, Reyna said in an interview with the FIFA website that he was 'excited' about the possibility of playing near where he grew up. No matter where you are in the world, you can watch the FIFA Club World Cup for free on DAZN. All you need to get started is an email address. No subscription is required, but you will have to make a free account on the streamer to start watching. DAZN also has premium, paid options available to enhance your viewing experience with HDR picture, Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, and fewer ads. DAZN Premium plans begin at $19.99/month. 'It's one of those stadiums that I've watched [games in] so much growing up that it's maybe going to be a little bit strange to actually be on the pitch there,' Reyna said of MetLife Stadium. 'I'm very excited for me and, of course, all my family and friends in the area. 'I'm going to have to get a lot of [tickets]. It should be fun and I'm really looking forward to it.' Kovac made three substitutions at the start of the second half, and another later on, but Reyna was not among them. 'Gio is a player of Dortmund [for] four or five years,' Kovac said earlier in the tournament. 'He is a part of my team at the moment. Gio is for sure a player who didn't play so much, but we know exactly his strengths, but we have top players here in the squad. 'The confidence is very big, so hopefully every player can get minutes, but I can't promise you this is depending also on the results, also injuries, but my ambition is to give every player minutes. But this is always in relation to the results.'

NBA Summer League: Ace Bailey posts 8 points in debut, while No. 3 pick V.J. Edgecombe drops 28 and dunk of the night

The first day of NBA Summer League action culminated in a matchup between two top 5 picks in Utah: V.J. Edgecombe and the Philadelphia 76ers vs. Ace Bailey and the Utah Jazz. Only one of them posted a star-level performance. That was Edgecombe, the No. 3 pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. A high-motor, high-athleticism wing, Edgecombe looked like the best player on a floor full of guys who saw NBA action last season, posting 28 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Advertisement Two of those points came on the dunk of the night, in which Edgecombe showed the kind of bounce you can't teach: It was the Jazz who won 93-89, though. Bailey finished the game with eight points on 3-of-13 shooting and seven rebounds. Until a week or so before the draft, many expected the Sixers to take Bailey, seen as one of the highest-ceiling prospects in the class, but they ended up taking Edgecombe. They might have always preferred Edgecombe, or Bailey might have helped them make a decision after declining to work out for them. Regardless, Edgecombe made it look like the right decision for at least one night. Advertisement The Sixers went to the Baylor product throughout the night and were frequently rewarded. Meanwhile, Bailey entered the game with more attention around him than your usual No. 5 pick, thanks to his own camp's actions. He made headlines when he reportedly became the only U.S.-based draft prospect to decline to work out for any teams before the draft, with the apparent goal of landing with a certain team early in the first round. That team was reportedly not the Jazz, who took the risk of picking him fifth. After some post-draft awkwardness, Bailey reported to his new team and denied he ever had a problem starting his NBA career in Utah. Advertisement Finally playing basketball again on Saturday, Bailey at least had his moments: Among the other NBA rookies getting their first action were the stars of two Final Four teams. Johni Broome, formerly of Auburn, had a solid night with 13 points and five rebounds after the Sixers took him in the second round. Florida's Walter Clayton Jr., the Final Four's most outstanding player and the draft's No. 18 pick, came off the bench for the Jazz and had nine points, six assists and three rebounds. Kyle Filipowski, a second-round pick last year, led the Jazz with 22 points.

Messi scores twice as Miami defeats Montreal 4-1

MONTREAL (AP) — Lionel Messi scored a pair of spectacular goals, including the tie-breaker late in the first half, as Inter Miami defeated CF Montreal 4-1 on Saturday night. Luis Suárez directed a long ball from Tomás Avilés to Messi with a header, who had time to gather the ball, dribble into the box and finish with his left foot to the far post to make it 2-1 in the 40th minute. It was the first M:S game in over a month for Miami while competing in the Club World Cup. PSG eliminated Miami 4-0 last week. Prince Owusu gave Montreal (3-13-5) a quick lead two minutes into the game. Tadeo Allende, assisted by Messi, scored in the 33rd minute to tie the game for Miami (9-3-5), which has won three straight, including a 3-2 win over Montreal at home on May 28. Telasco Segovia scored in the 60th minute and Messi connected again two minutes later, again weaving through a pack of Montreal defenders. Messi has 12 goals in 14 MSL games this season. Óscar Ustari made seven saves for Miami after a Messi giveway gave Owusu an easy goal. Miami (8-3-5) has won back-to-back games — including a 3-2 victory over Montreal at home on May 28 — and is unbeaten in three straight. ___ AP soccer:
