Govt nears completion of fisheries policy

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs is trying its best to introduce a comprehensive National Fisheries Policy in consultation with all stakeholders to bolster Pakistan's fisheries sector to enhance its contribution to the country's economy and boost seafood export revenues.
The ministry's official, on Saturday, said that apart from a broader nationwide consultation process, the workshops had been conducted in Karachi and Lahore respectively and a final consultative workshop is planned for June in Islamabad, as per the directive of Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.
He said that the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy initiative marked a vital step toward building a sustainable, inclusive, and economically viable fisheries sector in the country.
He further said that the policy would serve as a road map for sustainable development, increased exports, and international investment in the fisheries sector, adding that the government was taking a proactive approach to integrate industry feedback and ensure alignment with global environmental and economic standards.

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump is staking his reputation as a tough negotiator and slick dealmaker – that has served him well throughout his life – with his ultra-muscular, protectionist tariffs policy. On Friday, the White House released a picture of the US president seen with a smartphone pressed to his ear, with the caption: 'Making calls. Making deals. MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!' Every trade deal announced by the president, who is convinced that tariffs are both a tool and manifestation of America's economic might, is celebrated by his supporters as a show of his negotiating prowess. This week's flurry of rate changes was no different. On Thursday, with the stroke of a black marker, the former real estate developer slapped fresh tariffs on dozens of US trade partners. They will kick in on August 7 instead of August 1, which had previously been touted as a hard deadline. The Republican leader's backtracking, frequently setting trade deadlines only to rescind or extend them – he most recently granted Mexico a 90-day extension – has given rise to the mocking acronym 'TACO' ('Trump always chickens out'). Trump's global trade policy faces test, hours from tariff deadline The jokes implying Trump is all talk and no action on trade have previously struck a nerve for the president. 'Not chicken' But analysts believe there will be no going back this time. But despite comments about his trade policy reversals, Trump has hardly budged from his trade strategy, and that could prove politically painful. Flexible financial terms for ferry operators under consideration: minister
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Friday called for the swift launch of Pakistan's first ferry service, urging immediate reforms in licensing procedures and financial facilitation for operators to ensure affordable sea travel, support pilgrims, and enhance regional maritime connectivity. The minister made these remarks during a detailed briefing by the Director General of Shipping and Ports, Alia Shahid, at his office in Islamabad. To eliminate bureaucratic hurdles, the minister directed that the ferry licensing process be fully digitalised and integrated into the Pakistan Single Window platform, mirroring the existing system for ship registrations. He specifically instructed that the current six-month license issuance timeline be cut down to just one month. 'There's no justification for a half-year delay,' he said. 'We must eliminate red tape and act decisively.' Gwadar Port: govt announces new shipping lines, ferry service to GCC In a move to encourage private sector participation, the minister called for exploring flexible financial models for ferry operators. 'We must assess whether a bank guarantee, insurance guarantee, or a hybrid model is most viable,' he said. 'We aim to support, not hinder, entrepreneurs who wish to invest in this sector.' Chaudhry highlighted the broader utility of sea travel, particularly for religious pilgrims. 'Ferry services could offer an affordable and reliable option for Zaireen travelling to Iran and Iraq,' he said. 'If implemented effectively, this service could become a vital new transport link across the region,' the minister said, adding that a detailed roadmap for rollout will be unveiled soon.
