'They were very curious about what we were doing, they came to tour our sets, they would watch scenes that we were cutting together, they wanted to get to know these people as they were working on their story and their script, so that I could pass the baton to them and these characters would be well cared for,' Shakman said of Anthony and Joe Russo, who will helm 2026's much-hyped Avengers: Doomsday.

Releasing July 25 theatrically, the retrofuturistic take on the storied Marvel characters will take place in an alternate history/parallel universe exploring Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they take on Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and Shalla-Bal (Julia Garner).
Shakman said the film is equally influenced by the likes of comic book creator Jack Kirby's original vision and Stanley Kubrick's '60s epic sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
For his part, star Ineson said of Doomsday: 'I have no idea what Kevin Feige and everybody have planned, but I worked with Robert [Downey Jr.] a few years ago on Dolittle for a few days, and he's an absolute gentleman and amazing actor, so I loved having the chance to work with him and watch him work, so, yeah, if I got the chance to team up with him again, of course I would.'

Having been recently bogged down with box office failures, the MCU is looking to retool its approach to theatrical and series releases, Kevin Feige told reporters last week. Last month, Ironheart executive producer Ryan Coogler also teed up how the series would connect to future Marvel Studios plans with Doomsday, which is currently in production now.
Though much is under wraps about the film — centering on supervillain and Fantastic Four arch nemesis Dr. Doom (Downey Jr.) — confirmed cast members include Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Danny Ramirez, Hannah John-Kamen, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Channing Tatum, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Lewis Pullman and the quartet from First Steps.

Marvel is Making Big, Cosmic Moves in Its Comics
Things are always happening in the Marvel Universe, and a lot's been happening as of late. Doctor Doom's taken over the planet and there's been some big assassinations up in space, and they're both leading to some new status quo changes over the rest of 2025 and into 2026. At its various panels across San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher gave details on what's to come in the aftermath of its two big, current events, Imperial and One World Under Doom. In the pages of Doom's final issue in November, the evil Doctor will make sure to turn his victory over Earth's heroes into a fixed point in time, which also means his defeat is just as fixed, too. This will lead us into what looks like a hunt for the new Sorcerer Supreme since Doom's apparently vacated the spot. Our candidates include the likes of Storm, Nico Minoru, and Captain Marvel, and the succession process will begin in December. Space-wise, Imperial will end its four-part story in October. In its wake is a number of new cosmic-focused books, two of which were fully revealed: Planet She-Hulk from Stephanie Phillips and Aaron Kuder picks up with Jess still stuck on Sakaar and running things after promising to rule over it in Hulk's absence. And in Nova: Centurion, Jed McKay and Álvaro López pick up with Richard Rider as a drifter holding a sentient repository of the now extinct Xandarians. That repository requires a lot of energy and money, and that means Rich has to make some cash while reeling from knowing the 'terrible lie that the new Galactic Union was built upon.' Both books will be followed by Black Panther: Intergalactic in December, then Exiles and Imperial Guardians in winter 2026. The premises and creative teams for those will be revealed in the coming months. Over in Ultimate Marvel, that universe's heroes will see their first big event in Ultimate Endgame. Announced prior to SDCC, the five-issue miniseries Deniz Camp, Jonas Scharf, and other artists sees the Maker (Reed Richards) finally come out of his prison to find the heroes that've cropped up in his absence. Now that he's freed, it falls to the Ultimates, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Mei, and Wolverine to gather thier allies and fight for their world. During the Ultimate Marvel panel, Camp said the event 'has a bigger impact than most people will know' on the main and Ultimate universes, and further likened it to Crisis on Infinite Earths before Jonathan Hickman cheekily corrected him with Secret Wars. Before Ultimate Endgame begins on New Year's Eve, Hickman and Marco Checchetto's Ultimate Spider-Man will wrap after a two-year run on Christmas Eve. (The other books, such as Ultimate Black Panther and Ultimate X-Men, don't have final issues set at time of writing.) However, this isn't the complete end, as Marvel's promised that book will 'create promising roadmaps for future storytelling.' What awaits the Ultimate universe after things go down in Endgame will have to wait until 2026 draws closer. Want more io9 news? 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' scores Marvel's first $100 million box office opening of 2025
LOS ANGELES — Marvel's first family has finally found box office gold. "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," the first film about the superheroes made under the guidance of Kevin Feige and the Walt Disney Co., earned $118 million in its first weekend in 4,125 North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. That makes it the fourth biggest opening of the year, behind "A Minecraft Movie," "Lilo & Stitch" and "Superman," and the biggest Marvel opening since "Deadpool & Wolverine" grossed $211 million out of the gate last summer. Internationally, "Fantastic Four" made $100 million from 52 territories, adding up to a $218 million worldwide debut. The numbers were within the range the studio was expecting. The film arrived in the wake of another big superhero reboot, James Gunn's "Superman," which opened three weekends ago and has already crossed $500 million globally. That film, from the other main player in comic book films, DC Studios, took second place with $24.9 million domestically. The box office success of "First Steps" and "Superman" means "the whole notion of superhero fatigue, which has been talked about a lot, can I think be put to rest. I always say it's bad movie fatigue, not superhero fatigue," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore. "First Steps" is the latest attempt at bringing the superhuman family to the big screen, following lackluster performances for other versions. The film, based on the original Marvel comics, is set during the 1960s in a retro-futuristic world led by the Fantastic Four, a family of astronauts-turned-superhuman from exposure to cosmic rays during a space mission. The family is made up of Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), who can stretch his body to incredible lengths; Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), who can render herself invisible; Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), who transforms into a fiery human torch; and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), who possesses tremendous superhuman strength with his stone-like flesh. The movie takes place four years after the family gained powers, during which Reed's inventions have transformed technology, and Sue's diplomacy has led to global peace. Both audiences and critics responded positively to the film, which currently has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and promising exit poll responses from opening weekend ticket buyers. An estimated 46% of audiences chose to see it on premium screens, including IMAX and other large formats. The once towering Marvel is working to rebuild audience enthusiasm for its films and characters. Its two previous offerings this year did not reach the cosmic box office heights of "Deadpool & Wolverine," which made over $1.3 billion, or those of the "Avengers"-era. But critically, the films have been on an upswing since the poorly reviewed "Captain America: Brave New World," which ultimately grossed $415 million worldwide. "Thunderbolts," which jumpstarted the summer movie season, was better received critically but financially is capping out at just over $382 million globally. Like "Deadpool and Wolverine," the Fantastic Four characters had been under the banner of 20th Century Fox for years. The studio produced two critically loathed, but decently profitable attempts in the mid-2000s with future Captain America Chris Evans as the Human Torch. In 2015, it tried again (unsuccessfully) with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. They got another chance after Disney's $71 billion acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets in 2019. The "Fantastic Four's" opening weekend results were a little less than some rival studio projections, Dergarabedian said. Nonetheless, the film is expected to carry movie theater earnings well into August. Holdovers dominated the top 10, but one other newcomer managed to make the chart. The dark romantic comedy "Oh, Hi!" earned $1.1 million from 866 screens. "Jurassic World Rebirth" landed in third place in its fourth weekend with $13 million, followed by "F1" with $6.2 million. The Brad Pitt racing movie also passed $500 million globally. "Smurfs" rounded out the top five with $5.4 million in its second weekend. The box office is currently up over 12% from last year.
