Singapore: Swimming world championships - Australia's beaming Harris foils Walsh treble bid at worlds
SINGAPORE (AFP): Australia's Meg Harris denied Gretchen Walsh a sprint treble at swimming's world championships in Singapore on Sunday, winning the 50m freestyle for her first individual world title.
Harris, the Paris Olympics silver medallist, powered home in 24.02sec to beat Chinese pair Wu Qingfeng (24.26) and Cheng Yujie (24.28).
The American Walsh, who won gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly in Singapore, finished fourth in 24.40.
Australia also won the men's 50m freestyle, with Cam McEvoy taking gold on Saturday.
Harris said becoming an individual world champion was "the dream I have been dreaming of the whole time".
"This is why I swim," said the 23-year-old, who could not stop smiling as the magnitude of her achievement set in.
"I still can't put it into words, it'll take a while to process."
World record holder Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden, the reigning Olympic champion and a four-time world title-holder in the event, did not compete in Singapore.
"I love sprinting, I love racing. Could not be more happy," added Harris.
The Australian has now won six world golds in her career. The previous five were in relay events. - AFP

Frank Mill, 1990 World Cup winner, dies aged 67
BERLIN, Aug 5 — Frank Mill, a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, has died aged 67, his former clubs Fortuna Duesseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen confirmed today. Mill, who also won a bronze medal with West Germany at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and a German Cup with Borussia Dortmund, passed away from the effects of a severe heart attack suffered in May. He played 17 times for West Germany and was part of the 1990 World Cup squad, although he did not play in the tournament in Italy. In a statement, hometown club Essen called Mill 'a legend' and 'an ambassador for football across the country'. Ex-Arsenal player Partey in UK court charged with rape, sexual assault
LONDON (Reuters) -Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday, charged with raping two women while he was a player for the English Premier League soccer club. Partey, a Ghana international, is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. The 32-year-old sat in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court dressed in black during the brief hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward said that two of the charges Partey faces relate to him allegedly anally raping one complainant during consensual sex on separate occasions. Three further charges relate to a second woman whom Partey is accused of raping on three occasions, twice in Britain and once in Spain. He was not asked to enter pleas to any of the charges. Partey was granted bail ahead of his next court appearance at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. His lawyer previously said in a statement that Partey denies the charges and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name. Partey was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for 50 million euros ($57.7 million) in 2020 and became a key member of the English side's first team, making 52 appearances in all competitions last season. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. His contract with the Premier League club expired last month. British media have reported Partey is close to joining Spanish side Villarreal on a free transfer and Judge Paul Goldspring said during Tuesday's hearing that Partey would soon be moving to Spain.
