'I want to get everyone in the same structure' - Emery on Nashville draw

BBC News2 days ago
Unai Emery was happy with the test provided by Nashville SC after Aston Villa drew 2-2 with the MLS side in a pre-season friendly in Tennessee on Sunday morning.Ollie Watkins and Donyell Malen put Villa 2-0 up before Nashville scored twice late on in a match in which Emery used a total of 23 players. It was Villa's second match in the United States after a win over St Louis City last week. That was the club's only win so far in pre-season after defeats to Walsall and Hansa Rostock and a draw with Eintracht Frankfurt."We're finishing here our pre-season in the United States with the match we played," he said post-match."With the same objective, play all the players available and mixing young players with players getting fit."Of course, it's not my objective now to play or set the starting XI players."I want to try to get everyone in the same structure and in the same combination or different combinations we can have."Nashville played well and I know they are performing fantastic in their league here in the MLS."We faced them, respecting them, and even when we were 2-0 they were able to claim back a result. They drew and, of course, they showed their capacity."Last year we played against Columbus Crew, this year we played against St. Louis City, here (against Nashville) and all matches we play against MLS teams - sometimes we are winning, sometimes losing and sometimes drawing."The level they have is a very good level."How are you feeling about Villa's season to come? Fans are convinced they know who Jamie Vardy's next club will be after his wife Rebekah's latest social media post

Rebekah Vardy has set the internet ablaze with speculation over her husband Jamie's next club after a playful social media post on Tuesday. The Leicester City legend drew the curtains on his 13-year chapter with the Foxes earlier this summer, after announcing his departure as a free agent. But with less than four weeks remaining before the start of the top-flight season in England, and even less before the resumption of the Football League, the 38-year-old remains without a club. However, fans are now convinced of the striker's next move after his wife Rebekah posted an image of three of their children wearing each of Inter Miami's kits on Instagram. The WAG accompanied the playful post with a 'smiling face with sunglasses' emoji. Rebekah's post has many convinced that the England international is set to join a star-studded roster led by Lionel Messi, that includes his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, as well as his Argentina colleague Rodrigo De Paul. But a source close to the club has poured cold water on the possibility, telling Daily Mail there is 'absolutely no way' Vardy is joining the MLS outfit. 'No one at inter Miami will have heard of him, they just signed Rodrigo de Paul who won the World Cup with Argentina,' they added. 'It was nice of them to buy the kits though.' While Vardy's next club is yet to be determined, the Foxes legend has been spotted enjoying his time away from the field this summer. Last month, he and Rebekah joined by his footballing pals Harry Maguire and James Maddison on a getaway to Portugal. Rebekah took to Instagram on to share a glimpse of her lavish holiday as she posed up a storm in a coral, strapless, two-piece. The couple took the time to enjoy a few weeks at their £9.7million villa in the Algarve. They've been joined by the England striker's former teammates, including Manchester United captain Maguire, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Maddison and also Andy King, who used to play for Wales and is now a coach at the trio's old club. Sharing more holiday pictures, Rebekah showed off her incredible figure last week in a skimpy bikini while larking around on a boat with a pal. She flaunted her toned frame in the swimwear while posing up a storm for a photo posted on social media, with her friend Grant Wheelhouse quick to poke fun at her antics.

Arsenal's No9s rated and slated as Viktor Gyokeres bids to finally end Mikel Arteta's long wait for reliable striker

ARSENAL hope to have finally found their dream striker who can lead the line for years. Viktor Gyokeres is expected to make his Emirates debut in front of a 55,000-plus crowd when the Gunners play Villarreal in their first home friendly of the season on Wednesday night. 9 9 9 Arsene Wenger's Invincibles of 21 years ago boasted the stardust of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp up front. Arsenal have ever since been on a search to find another prolific, reliable and injury-free No 9 — but the majority of signings have proved to be misses rather than hits. ROBIN VAN PERSIE In 2004, still basking in the glory of their record-breaking season, Dutchman Van Persie joined from Feyenoord for £2.75million. His goal ratio was excellent, although he was hampered by a few nasty injuries, and then headed off to Manchester United to fire them to the title. 8 NICKLAS BENDTNER Ahead of their final season at Highbury in 2005, Arsenal signed a 17-year-old Bendtner, who spent nine years on the club's payroll. Although a reasonable player, the Dane was nowhere near as good as he thought he was. In 2009, he switched shirt numbers from 26 to 52 because his new deal was worth £52,000 a week. 5 EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR Scored 12 goals in his first full campaign at the new Emirates home after switching from Monaco in 2006. Togo star Adebayor could have achieved more but left for Manchester City then Spurs — which made him a figure of hate among Gunners supporters. 6 Arsenal's 2025-26 third kit 'leaked' and fans absolutely love it EDUARDO A talented striker — but we will never know what could have been. Eduardo joined from Dinamo Zagreb in 2007 and was doing well until he suffered a horrific leg break in a tackle by Birmingham's Martin Taylor. He was never the same player again. 6 MAROUANE CHAMAKH 9 Moroccan frontman arrived from Bordeaux in 2010 but is mainly remembered for his hairstyles. Known among team-mates for poor timekeeping, he once turned up late for an away trip in a white chauffeur-driven limousine. 4 PARK CHU-YOUNG A disaster. The Monaco man was in the middle of his medical at Lille in 2011 when he learned there was interest from Arsenal. He arrived in London just 24 hours before both Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker but unlike the other two, he barely played. In three seasons, the South Korean made just one sub-appearance in the Prem. 1 LUKAS PODOLSKI 9 One of the club's most high-profile signings remains a big crowd favourite — but Podolski never reached the highest levels. Arriving from Cologne, he had an uneasy relationship with boss Wenger and went out on loan to Inter Milan. A stunning volley against Montpellier in the Champions League is considered his best Arsenal moment. 6 OLIVIER GIROUD At the same time as Podolski, Giroud was signed having just fired Montpellier to a shock Ligue 1 title. With 105 goals in a six-year spell, the Frenchman the Frenchman could be effective but he was also known as a big-game flop, missing vital chances. At Chelsea, he helped secure victories in both the Champions League and Europa League. 6 YAYA SANOGO 9 A total failure. The ex-Auxerre forward spent four years at Arsenal but made just two Premier League starts. 1 DANNY WELBECK Was at Arsenal's training ground with the England squad when he made his move from Manchester United. Unfortunately for Welbeck, his time at the club was ruined by serious knee and ankle injuries. 6 LUCAS PEREZ 9 A prime contender for Arsenal's worst big-money signing, the Spaniard cost a hefty £17m from Deportivo La Coruna. Despite a Champions League hat-trick at Basel, Perez failed to establish himself and only made two Premier League starts. 5 ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE In Wenger's last season, the board allowed the manager to sign Lacazette for £52m . The Frenchman's goals-per-game record was quite good, especially as the Gunners were struggling, but he was still a frustrating player. 7 PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG 9 The Gabonese forward will be remembered fondly for scoring twice in the FA Cup final against Chelsea in 2020. Yet at times Auba seemed more interested in his cars, and his attitude frustrated Arteta. 8 GABRIEL JESUS Joined in 2022 for a hefty £45m from Manchester City — but the Brazilian's goals tally is mediocre. He has spent a fair amount of time on the subs bench and in the physio room. 6 KAI HAVERTZ Yet another to arrive from Chelsea, this time for £65m. The German has still to make an explosive impact but he could be helped by Gyokeres' arrival. 7 EDDIE NKETIAH 9 Fans were desperate for the home-grown favourite to succeed up front. Had plenty of chances but was sold to Crystal Palace in 2024. 6

Aston Villa close in on £30.5m deal for Nice forward Evann Guessand

Aston Villa are close to making the Nice forward Evann Guessand their first major summer signing. Villa have agreed a package worth €35m (£30.5m) for the Ivory Coast international. Villa have scheduled a medical for Guessand on Wednesday and plan to sign the 24-year-old to a long-term contract. The France-born player scored 12 goals in 32 appearances in Ligue 1 last season and scored his first international goal in March. His arrival would be a boost to Unai Emery's attacking options, with Ollie Watkins the only bona fide striker in the Villa squad. Like Donyell Malen, Guessand's versatility makes him an attraction option for Villa. Villa have had to be mindful of profitability and sustainability regulations this summer and their only other first-team signing so far is the experienced goalkeeper Marco Bizot, who was signed as a No 2 from Brest. Zépiqueno Redmond, signed from Feyenoord, could depart on loan. Uncertainty continues to surround Emiliano Martínez, who is thought to be keen on exploring a fresh challenge. Watkins has been the subject of interest from rivals but Villa do not wish to sell. Villa also want to trim their squad and offload fringe players such as Àlex Moreno and Leander Dendoncker. Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton has joined Lyon in a £15m deal. The 22-year-old, who came through the academy ranks at Liverpool, had interest from several European and Premier League clubs this summer but opted to pursue more regular first-team football in France. Liverpool have also negotiated a 20% sell-on clause in any future transfer. The Premier League champions are well stocked in central midfield and Morton's opportunities may have been further limited next season by the return of Stefan Bajcetic, plus the development of James McConnell and Luca Stephenson.
