Celtics' Jrue Holiday named NBA's Social Justice Champion
He will receive the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy and a $100,000 donation from the league for his foundation.
Holiday, who won the NBA's Sportsmanship Award for the second time last week, was one of five finalists selected for "pursuing social justice and advancing Abdul-Jabbar's life mission to engage, empower and drive equality for individuals and groups who have been historically disadvantaged," according to a league statement.
The Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund has distributed $5.3 million in grants and delivered more than 400 hours of coaching and support to nearly 200 businesses across the U.S.
"Since entering the league, Jrue Holiday has dedicated himself to helping others in their times of greatest need and pursuing a more just society for all," NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Mark Tatum said. "The selflessness that defines his game is even more evident in the work he and his wife Lauren do off the floor to create more opportunities for a generation of youth who might have otherwise been overlooked."
The JLH Fund was established when Holiday pledged $5 million of his 2020 NBA salary to combat systemic racism and economic injustice.
Holiday, 34, joins previous winners Carmelo Anthony, Reggie Bullock, Stephen Curry and Karl-Anthony Towns.
The other finalists were Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat, Harrison Barnes of the San Antonio Spurs, Chris Boucher of the Toronto Raptors and CJ McCollum of the New Orleans Pelicans.

"I came here in 2018 and it gave me so much confidence, so I'm so happy that I was able to come back and end up winning the title," De Minaur said at the trophy presentation. "Alejandro, you're way too good not to have one of these, it's coming for sure," he added, gesturing to the trophy. "You deserved it today, I just got lucky. You are a hell of a competitor, hell of a player. No one on the tour wants to play you. And this is not the end, this is only going on for you." Davidovich Fokina recalled that he had required a wild card to play in the U.S. capital last year and was pleased to have at least guaranteed a rise to a career high world number 19 when the rankings are updated on Monday. "He deserved the win, he was fighting every ... ball, he was always pushing through my limits," Davidovich Fokina said. "We had a job to do before we started the year, to be at the middle of the year in the top 20. This week we did it, just not with the trophy. Twins All-Star OF Byron Buxton (rib cartilage) day-to-day
July 28 - Minnesota Twins All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton has cartilage irritation in his rib cage and his status is day-to-day, the team announced Sunday. Manager Rocco Baldelli said after Buxton's MRI exam on Sunday that the outfielder will not be placed on the injured list. "It's a good outcome," Baldelli said. "We'll see how he is tomorrow and so on, but to be day-to-day with what he left the game with, it's a good thing. We'll measure him out, get him looked at by the trainers each day, get him a lot of treatment and, hopefully, he'll be back very soon." Buxton, 31, left Saturday's 9-3 loss to the visiting Washington Nationals because of left-side soreness and sat out Sunday, when Harrison Bader started in center field and the Nationals won 7-2 in Minneapolis. Though Buxton has dealt with a spate of injuries throughout his career, the two-time All-Star has mostly been healthy this season except for going on the concussion injured list in May. Buxton is hitting .282 with 23 homers, 59 RBIs and 17 steals in 85 games this season. He has a .343 on-base percentage, .561 slugging percentage and .905 OPS. He is a career .249 hitter with 156 homers and 412 RBIs in 857 games for the Twins since the 2015 season. Buxton earned the Gold Glove for American League center fielders in 2017.
