Scientists figure out the flaw behind stuck rovers using free software

Space operations are extremely sophisticated and expensive undertakings. There are so many things that can go wrong, especially when it comes to on-ground missions on extra-terrestrial bodies such as the Moon and nearby planets, conducted through remotely-operated robots and vehicles. An event as minor as a rover getting stuck can dramatically impact the mission objective or even abandonment.
In 2005, the wheels of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity were stuck in sand, and it took six weeks of inch-by-inch maneuvering by experts at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to free it. Just a few weeks ago, the Perseverance rover also struggled with a stuck drill bit, but the situation was fortunately resolved.
But not every story has a happy ending. In 2009, the Spirit rover found itself on a slope in a rather peculiar situation, and could never be recovered. With the Martian winter further complicating the rescue efforts, the Spirit mission was officially abandoned two years later. Such accidents could soon become a thing of the past.
A major breakthrough
Engineers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have spotted a flaw in the testing protocols of these rovers on Earth, which often gives an overly optimistic view of their exploration capabilities. Rovers are often tested in desert-like areas, which simulate the dry conditions on the Moon and Mars, accounting for the reduced gravity on these bodies.

But as per the research team at UW-Madison, the tests often ignore the impact of gravity exerted on the sand particles, which means the simulation tests are not nearly as accurate (read: realistic) as they should be. 'An important element in preparing for these missions is an accurate understanding of how a rover will traverse extraterrestrial surfaces in low gravity to prevent it from getting stuck in soft terrain or rocky areas,' the team explains.
Notably, it's the same team that is working on simulation modeling for NASA's VIPER rover. The Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, mission was supposed to look for water and other useful resources on the harsher side of the Moon, but the project was terminated in 2024.
The team relied on an open-source simulation software called Chrono to discover the discrepancy in the Earth-based rover testing protocols. It's the same software that is also used for estimating the off-roading capabilities of US Army vehicles. The team has detailed its findings in a paper published in the Journal of Field Robotics.
The road to safer rover missions
The team at UW-Madison, however, continued its work on rover tech for space missions. Elaborating on the phenomenon, the team notes that Earth's gravity creates a stronger pull on the sand particles than what the same particles would feel on the Moon, or Mars.
Additionally, the sand on Earth is said to be more rigid, while the top surface on the Moon is softer, which means it will shift more dramatically under the rover's wheels, and as a result, reduces the traction.
Interestingly, the software that enabled the aforementioned discovery, is used across diverse industries. Aside from educational institutions, some of its more notable users include the U.S. Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center, NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, and the National Renewable Energy Lab.
It was also used by the experts at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy for the Mascot lander for its asteroid Ryugu mission. In addition to vehicle simulations and advanced robots, Project Chrono has even been deployed for 'miniaturized mechanisms for watches.'

Late summer's season of nighttime spectacles gets an unofficial kickoff Tuesday as two regular meteor showers will peak simultaneously tonight and into early Wednesday. Though among the minor meteor shower events, activity for both the Southern Delta Aquariid and Alpha Capricornids will be at peak activity between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m. local time for viewers in the Northern Hemisphere. Individually, the two showers aren't the most dramatic of 'shooting star' events but together they're expected to generate 20 or more meteors per hour and some of the phenomena may appear as larger 'fireballs,' according to the American Meteor Society. And for those with clear skies overhead, conditions should be excellent for viewing the meteors. 'Late July in 2025 will be a great time to view meteor activity, as the moon will be in the evening sky and setting before the activity is strongest,' the American Meteor Society explained on its website. With each shower expected to produce up to a dozen visible meteors per hour under dark skies, the doubleheader means the total number of meteors 'do add up,' Thaddeus LaCoursiere, planetarium program coordinator at the Bell Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota, told the Associated Press. 'Look for flashes of light in the night sky,' LaCoursiere said, adding that both are 'very nice classic meteor showers.' Watchers don't need any special equipment to observe meteors and should look for activity in the southern sky. What's the origin of a meteor shower? Meteor showers are regular phenomena that occur as the Earth travels through debris fields left behind by comets and, in some cases, asteroids. The showers peaking on Tuesday are the result of debris from two comets, comet 96P/Machholz and comet 169P/NEAT, entering the Earth's atmosphere and burning up in the extreme heat of atmospheric resistance. The Alpha Capricornids — produced by slower-moving meteors — may have tails that linger slightly longer in the sky, said Nick Moskovitz of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. A bonus to the north Those planning on staying up late, or getting up early, to catch the show may also want to keep half an eye on the northern sky as the popular and prolific Perseids meteor display is also under way. The Perseids, which are generated by debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, are active from July 17 through Aug. 23 this year with peak activity expected on Aug. 12-13, according to NASA. With swift and bright meteors, Perseids frequently leave long 'wakes' of light and color behind them as they streak through Earth's atmosphere. And they are one of the most plentiful showers with about 50 to 100 meteors seen per hour. (Reuters) -Firefly Aerospace said on Tuesday it has secured a $176.7 million NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services contract to deliver five NASA payloads to the Moon's South Pole in 2029, marking another step toward expanding private sector participation in U.S. lunar exploration. The mission, dubbed Blue Ghost Mission 4, will use Firefly's Elytra Dark orbital vehicle and Blue Ghost lunar lander to deploy two rovers and three scientific instruments aimed at evaluating lunar resources, radiation and thermal conditions critical for future human exploration. In a pivotal shift for U.S. space policy, NASA has been increasingly turning to private companies such as Firefly to deliver critical payloads and technologies to the Moon, a strategy designed to accelerate deep space exploration by leveraging commercial efficiency and cost savings. The Elytra Dark vehicle will first deploy the Blue Ghost lander into lunar orbit and then remain in orbit for over five years. The lander will operate on the Moon's surface for more than 12 days, providing power, data and communications for the payloads, which include the MoonRanger rover, a Canadian Space Agency rover, and other instruments. Firefly Aerospace's first Blue Ghost mission successfully landed on the Moon in March. The mission, named "Ghost Riders in the Sky," launched in January, and became the second private firm to score a Moon landing, though it declared itself the first company to make a "fully successful" soft landing. Earth has dodged a celestial bullet, but the moon might not be so lucky, and that has scientists keeping their telescopes and minds trained on a massive asteroid called '2024 YR4.' That's not its official name, but more on that later. When it was first discovered, this asteroid had a very small chance of impacting Earth in December of 2032, but later observations concluded the space rock no longer poses any significant risk to our planet. Since then, additional data has helped experts refine the asteroid's potential trajectory and they say the probability of it striking the moon in 2032 has now risen to 4.3%. That's still a very small chance, but there could be some complications for our planet if that collision happens. (MORE: Lego Man's Epic Space Journey) Back To The Beginning 2024 YR4 first caught astronomers' attention in December 2024. It made headlines when its probability of impacting Earth got as high as 3%. It's so far away that it appears as just a tiny glimmer, but using infrared images captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, scientists estimate that it's the size of a 10-story building, about 200 feet in diameter. It's considered a near-Earth asteroid, meaning it's in an orbit that brings it within Earth's region of the solar system. Its size earned the asteroid the nickname 'city killer' since it could cause severe damage to a city or region if it struck Earth. 2024 YR4 is the temporary name given to the rock. While those who discovered it will get to suggest an official name, it could be months or years before that official name is decided by the International Astronomical Union. What Happens If It Strikes The Moon? If this asteroid hits the moon, scientists say it will make impact at a speed of tens of thousands of miles per hour. That would create a huge crater, but more importantly, it could also send fragments of moon rock and granular lunar material flying off the moon. While it's unlikely the Earth would face any significant danger from the lunar strike, that debris could put nearby astronauts at risk, as well as satellites that we depend on for GPS, cellphones, internet and weather forecasting. What about the International Space Station? Well that would be at risk, except that NASA plans to decommission and deorbit the ISS in 2031, a year before the asteroid's potential impact. The latest calculations from June suggest it's likely the asteroid could hit the near side of the moon, the side pointing towards us. So we could be able to see the once-in-a-lifetime collision here on Earth. Dr. Paul Wiegert, a physics and astronomy professor at Western University told Western News, 'If YR4 hits the moon, it will be the largest asteroid to have hit the moon in about 5,000 years. It's quite a rare event.' Wiegert says, 'People at home will be able to see the explosion with small telescopes or even binoculars.' He also says that if moon rock is launched into space, 'We should also get to see quite a spectacular meteor shower,' within a week of the collision. So What Now? Asteroid 2024 YR4 is currently too far away to detect with space or ground-based telescopes, as it orbits around the sun. But out of sight, does not mean out of mind – NASA expects to make more observations and collect new data when the asteroid's orbit brings it back into Earth's vicinity in 2028.
