FARIDABAD: Over a month after the owner of a house in Sikri village and a daily wager he hired to clean a septic tank choked to death inside it, allegedly after inhaling toxic gases, police on Wednesday booked the deceased owner of the house.
Police said
Mukesh
, an egg hawker, tried to rescue
Anand
—a daily wager from the same village—when the latter collapsed inside the tank. On May 14, Anand brought along Ravi to clean the tank at Mukesh's house. As the two descended inside it without any safety equipment, Anand inhaled toxic gases and fell unconscious, while Ravi managed to exit with Mukesh's help. The house owner then jumped inside to save Anand but succumbed to the fumes himself.
Now, Sector 58 police have booked deceased Mukesh for causing death due to negligence following the complaint of Anand's wife,
Anita
of Palwal, who accused Mukesh of not providing safety gear to her husband before making them clean the septic tank. The accused was booked under section 106 of BNS and under relevant section 9 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
Anand is survived by a wife, two daughters, and a son.

He resided with his sister in Sikri village. Immediately after the incident on the fateful day, Mukesh's family raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to rush in and pull out the victims using a rope. Anand and Mukesh were rushed to the nearby Civil Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. A team from Sector 58 police station arrived to inspect the tank after being informed about the deaths around 3 pm.
Vinod, the SHO of Sector 58 police station, said that a leakage in the septic tank caused asphyxia. 'Mukesh gave the cleaning contract to Anand, who brought Ravi with him. Initially, they intended to clean only a small drain entry. But later, they decided to clean the entire septic tank without using any masks. They should have used a proper mask and other equipment before entering the tank. It is always risky to enter such underground tanks that are full of toxic gases,' he added.

Five arrested for bulk booking of online passes for Trimbakeshwar darshan and selling them at high rates

Nashik: Five people were arrested by Trimbakeshwar police for allegedly booking online paid darshan passes for Trimbakeshwar temple in large quantities and then selling them at exorbitant rates to pilgrims visiting the twelve jyotirlingas. Inspector Mahesh Kulkarni said an FIR was registered with the police on Thursday regarding some people purchasing Rs 200 denomination passes issued by Shri Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust in bulk and then selling them to the pilgrims at exorbitant rates. "An FIR was registered with the police regarding the sale of such online passes to the pilgrims at very high rates. The police investigated the matter and found that there were five people staying in and around Trimbakeshwar involved in the act and arrested them late Thursday night," said Kulkarni. The paid darshan passes are issued across the counter as well as through the online process. The officer said that the police tracked the tickets, mobile numbers, and email IDs that revealed the purchase of the darshan passes in bulk by a group of five people using fake names and Aadhaar numbers. "The passes carry the names of pass holders. These are verified by the QR scanner at the entrance. The sellers of these passes inform the pilgrims the names they need to tell the security persons at the gates, if they are asked," the officer said. Police have filed charges under Sections 318 (4), 112, and 336 (3) of BNS against the accused who sold them for Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 each. Police claimed that five people sold at least 1,648 passes and pocketed the proceeds without sharing them with the trust. The five arrested are Dileep Jhole and Sudam Badade, both residents of Pegalwadi, Samadhan Chothe and Manohar Shevare, both from Rokadwadi, and Shivraj Aher, residing near Niranjani Akhada -- all in and around Trimbakeshwar town.

‘No sir, we don't want to stay at Main Hostel': JU ragging scar yet to heal

1 2 Kolkata: The scars of ragging at Jadavpur University are yet to heal. More than 100 second-year undergraduate students have refused to relocate from New Boys' Hostel to the Main Hostel for their third year due to the traumatic experience at the Main Hostel two years ago. These students are from the same batch as the fresher who had in Aug 2023 died after falling off the second-floor balcony of the Main Hostel and several of them had also faced brutal ragging. In a letter to dean of students Rajat Roy, the students said they were yet to recover from the ragging incident that claimed the life of their batchmate two years ago and would agree to the shift only if they were not made to share either the floor or dining area or bathrooms with seniors. During interactions with the dean and some teachers on Wednesday they said they would not feel secure at the Main Hostel . After the 2023 ragging incident, JU had reorganised hostel allocations, assigning freshers to New Block and Old PG Hostel and second-year students to New Boys' and JPJU. Third- and fourth-year students were housed in A1 and A2 blocks of the Main Hostel and postgraduate students in B, C, and D blocks of the Main Hostel. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These 11 Everyday Foods Might Be the Key to Knee Pain Relief Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata "We are afraid to shift to the Main Hostel because some of us were victims of ragging in A2 block where we initially stayed as freshers. The death of our batchmate adversely affected our mental health. The ragging culture is still prevalent there," said a student. Another student pointed out that some of them were witnesses in the ongoing case at Alipore court and added, "The university should provide us a safe and secure residence." At least five students told TOI they would shift to private accommodation if they were assigned rooms in the Main Hostel. A senior university official acknowledged the concerns were genuine. "We will try to address these issues before the hostel allotment process begins," he said. Following the death of the Bengali first-year student two years ago, the university's probe panel report highlighted that "ragging in various form" was widespread at the Main Hostel, with A2 block being the most notorious. Freshers were subjected to physical tortures in "intro sessions" conducted by seniors. They were also stripped, forced to perform obscene dances, verbally abused, spanked and compelled to run errands for the seniors. "Some of the third-year students faced the 'intro' session as freshers two years ago. They are apprehensive of facing similar abuse if they return to the Main Hostel," said a teacher who spoke with boarders.
